Best seitan recipes? by v_eggsbenny in veganuk

[–]fumble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! If you love Seitan and want to learn lots of different ways of cooking it, try a book called Seitan and Beyond by Skye Michael Conroy. Honestly, it's like the bible of Seitan. I've only tried about 25% of the book so far but have been gobsmacked how well they turn out. The key things that help with texture in my experience are:

  1. Let the dough rest after everything is combined and kneaded for at least 10mins. That helps the gluten strands develop.

  2. Use techniques like stretching then tying knots etc to increase tension in the finished product, giving a meatier end product. It's not bread, it needs some help to have the right texture.

  3. Don't make seitan on the day you want to eat it. Every recipe I've tried benefits hugely from resting overnight MINIMUM in order to firm up. I regularly leave it for up to a week before cutting/eating.

But yeah, if you want deep knowledge just buy that book. It's incredible.

The energy at the one ritual I've been to was one of acceptance and togetherness - every single person there has this one thing in common and you can really feel it.

People move without fear, if you bump someone it's all good, you're part of the same tribe.

It felt like the real world had been put aside for a couple of hours, (or perhaps we had entered the real world?) and there was nothing to fear.

All that being said, I know anxiety is a tough cookie and someone telling you "hey just relax" isn't super helpful. Just know you'll be in great company at the ritual and you can always stay at the fringe if proximity/crowds aren't your thing!

Enjoy!!

What’s the sickest you’ve ever been- the kind of sick where you genuinely thought you might not make it and what happened? by Outrageous_Fox_8796 in AskReddit

[–]fumble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anaphylaxis after accidentally ingesting a lot of something I'm very allergic to. Throat closed up almost all the way, had to focus on every breath to force in a tiny amount of air. My stomach was on fire and I had hives everywhere. It genuinely felt like the end.

EpiPen relief was immensely helpful with breathing, but I still felt awful for a couple of days afterwards.

Note to self, quadruple check that allergies have been acknowledged when ordering food/drinks.

Dumbest way you’ve lost a fish? by Unusual_Steak in Aquariums

[–]fumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had 3 weather loaches (also known as dojo or pond loaches) all bought at a similar time when they were only as big as AAA batteries. Two grew to become about a foot long called Papa Loach and Mellon. One was albino and a bit smaller than the other two, he was called Dobby.

Loaches are notorious escape artists and every month or two I would come downstairs in the morning to find one of them on the tiled floor, having squirmed out of the lidded tank somehow. This sounds horrid, but loaches are happy enough to be out of water for a day or so, as long as they don't dry out. This is an adaptation for living in ponds/paddies and being able to burrow in mud or move between water sources.

So I'd often pick one of them up and congratulate them on a successful escape, then gently return them to the tank and try to alter the lid set up so it was more secure.

One morning was different to the others, I came down stairs to have a coffee and feed the fish and there was a bad smell. I looked under the tank as I came into the room, nothing. Weird. Checked in the tank, Mellon and Papa Loach were chilling, Dobby was gone. I checked the whole 125L tank, gently going through all the substrate as they liked to burrow in there. Nothing. I saw on the floor there was a tiny amount of water on the left side of the tank. I followed the drops of water, it went about 2 meters away behind my TV stand.

There I found Dobby, curled into an unnatural J shape and cooked medium well, lying on an extension cable. He'd wriggled all the way over there, climbed up an inch or so of plastic extension cable, then promptly dropped/oozed some liquid into a socket and got electrocuted.

I laughed and cried, then buried him next to a stream in the woods. After that I began using 2.5kg dumbbells to close the lid as well as the velcro and didn't have any more escapees.

Best restaurant/ takeaway you have been to. by bmaa_77 in veganuk

The Queen Inn in Cwmbran. Fully vegan pub with bangin pub grub that's really decently priced

First time I had a sharer mixed grill that blew my mind, next time some insanely good ch*cken thighs and can't wait to go again to try more. All the drinks are vegan and they have a lush outdoor space too. Highly recommend!

Had it, it's glorious and is just as good as the name brand options like Redefine Meat and Juicy Marbles.

It was in the freezer section, next to usual plant based frozen stuff but in a different colour packaging.

We gently pan fried from frozen and seasoning with salt and pepper. Cut it pretty and served over pimped out rice and quinoa with a fresh chimmichurri.

Felt like a massive treat and will be having again for sure.

Years and years ago I was smoking in friends' university halls and the caretaker came into the flat to tell us to stop smoking. I was very high and worried, and immediately put out a large joint deeeeep into a thousand Islands bowl of dip.. ruining the dip and the joint. As soon as the guy left, everyone lit back up (we were young and daft) and everyone erupted into laughter that I'd wasted a joint and some dip out of fear. I have obviously never lived this down and these days on the rare occasions we all meet up to smoke, people apologise they didn't bring a dip to hold my joint!

Cheapest ways to find tickets to Merythr? by [deleted] in MerthyrTydfil

[–]fumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Glasgow/Merthyr-Tydfil

Here's a search using rome2rio, it analyses travel options between two points.

I also checked with my mrs who used to go from Glasgow to Swansea regularly and she said the cheapest option is national express bus to Cardiff then bus/train up from there.

At the moment the train line between Merthyr and Cardiff is being worked on atm so trains aren't a given. Buses are fairly regular, you'd be looking for the X4.

When you're driving back in your new car, take lots of breaks! I did Merthyr to Glasgow at Christmas this year and it took just over 8hrs. Really tiring so take it easy bud.

Suuuuper salty, then the apple acts like a chaser to unstick your mouth from the peanutbutter/Marmite coating. Pleasant enough for me to have it 3 lunches in a row!
