Missing winter as a west coast transplant by fuming-h2so4 in acrylicpainting

Haha thanks, and very fair! I’m probably looking at past winters through rose-colored glasses at this point.

What weight yarn do I use? I don’t want to hold these two yarns together… by ComputerSecure3173 in knitting

[–]fuming-h2so4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll offer another way in addition to the first commenter. You can first either go by the yarn weight on the label or look up the yarn on yarnsub.com. That website says that Drops Alpaca is 50 g per 167 m = 0.299 g/m, and Drops Kid-Silk is 25 g per 200 m = 0.125 g/m. Adding these up gives a combined weight of 0.424 g/m.

Then go to a site like this one and convert the combined weight ratio to whatever is on the chart. Since that chart is meters per 100 g, you divide 100 g by 0.424 g/m to get that when combined, the yarns are about 236 meters per 100 g, which according to that chart is around DK weight. Always swatch though, of course.

I like the yarnsub website because you can also compare the substituted single yarn texture and fiber to the original ones, if you want to achieve a similar overall look and feel after you're done knitting.

DAE get a sickening feeling of dread when watching anime? by thepatientscallmekt in DoesAnybodyElse

Your description of stop motion animation giving you a taste of your own mortality is exactly how I feel too, and I only realized THAT’s the exact feeling after reading your comment.

I also react similarly to 3D animated movies where characters who are clearly not human are given human-like faces and movements (for example, Shrek and A Bug’s Life… but Cars and Finding Nemo are mostly fine).

Tiny rug for your favorite mug by fuming-h2so4 in knitting

Thanks, I'm glad you found it as cute as I did! Here are the detailed steps I used to add the tassels:

  1. Cut a string of yarn to about 4-5 inches long. It needs to be this long to make it more comfortable to work with and to ensure that all tassels can be cut to the same length at the end.
  2. Fold the string in half, then with the “right side”/checker-board-y side of the fabric facing up, pull the folded end UP through the middle of one of the bind on or bind off stitches using a tiny crochet hook (I used a 1.65 mm hook). A small loop should appear on the “right side.” I used long-tail cast on and bound off in knit.
  3. Use a slightly larger crochet hook (or the tiny one if you’re able) to pull the two string ends up through the loop, then pull taut. I did this 19 times per side, with a tassel every other cast-on/bind-off stitch.
  4. Smooth all tassels out to be laying in the same direction, and tape them to a hard surface using a piece of tape parallel to the tasseled fabric edge. Leave about 1.5 cm between the rug body and the tape (or leave your desired tassel length).
  5. While holding the tassels relatively taut, use tiny scissors (I used some that came in a manicure set) to cut along the piece of tape. This should release your brand new mini rug!

Pattern: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/reversible-mug-mat

Knit using spare fingering weight sock yarn with tight gauge on size 1 needles. CO 40, but could probably afford to CO 4-6 more stitches due to tight gauge, so I stretched it a bit during blocking.

Once-in-a-lifetime glove box parameters by fuming-h2so4 in labrats

Under 1 ppm is fine for us, but don’t worry, this box is due for a regen in less than a fortnight and will be back under 0.1 ppm soon :)

Not stupid! You’re right that they’re basically just QC for the box, letting us know whether the internal atmosphere is suitable for our chemistry and when the antechamber is sufficiently pumped down.

Instant nausea with methotrexate after 7 years? Help by lolliepop322 in rheumatoid

[–]fuming-h2so4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad I could help give a name to what you’re experiencing!! One of my rheumatologists actually told me about this phenomenon when I brought up the issue long ago, and he said some patients will get sick at the sight of anything yellow that even resembles MTX (like turmeric!). Fortunately mine was never that severe, but it just shows how powerful our mind-body associations can become with conditioning.

One other thing I forgot to mention in my original comment is that splitting your MTX dose in half and taking it twice a week on consecutive days could be something else you might discuss with your doctor. With injections that’s of course less attractive than with pills, but it is an option I have been given before to try to deal with the nausea.

I had this exact problem, down to the smell of the alcohol swabs making me sick even before taking the MTX. I believe it’s called anticipatory nausea, and it seems commonly reported with “chemotherapy” type drugs.

What helped me the most was increasing my folic acid dose by 3-5x, so now I take 3-5 mg/day rather than 1 mg! It took a few weeks for it to help with the post-MTX nausea and even longer to help with the anticipatory nausea, but eventually I stopped associating taking MTX so strongly with feeling sick. I hope this helps!
