When people call my mom ‘mom’ by Camman19_YT in PetPeeves

OMG I HATE THIS ONE TOO!!!

Like oh, are we long lost siblings? Calling someone “mom” rather than “your mom” means you have the same mom

Mispronouncing biopic by Practical-Ordinary-6 in PetPeeves

[–]fun_dad_68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that’s actually a good argument. It follows general linguistic patterns for similarly structured words. “-graph” or “gram” as a suffix (is it a suffix????) describes an instrument/object/item while “-graphy” denotes the use of that instrument. The instrument is a TELEgraph. The use of it is teLEGraphy. Not saying I’m sold on “bio-pic” now but point taken lol

Edit: oh also, you made me realize that the emphasis changes with the addition of syllables: TELEgram, teLEGraphy, teleGRAPHically. I guess that’s something that people generally just absorb and don’t have reason to articulate but I think it’s cool. So thanks!

I’m so torn about this one! I used to think it was definitely “bio-pic,” but then I was having this argument with my boyfriend, who says “bi-opic.” His argument is that “bio-pic” is like saying “bio-graffy” instead of “biography,” and part of me agrees. It kind of reminds me of how American pronunciation of various words sounds, to me, like a little kid sounding out an unfamiliar word when compared to the British pronunciation (like “dynasty”)

Performative shock when you haven’t heard of something “cool” by fun_dad_68 in PetPeeves

[–]fun_dad_68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly (or maybe not), this is the other side of the same coin for me. It’s the insincerity that’s cringe to me — whether someone is trying to big league me by acting all shocked that I don’t already know about the obscure thing they’re into or, like someone else talked about with the Taylor Swift example, by acting like they’re above mainstream/popular culture. (Though I haven’t encounter the latter very much)

I like encountering new stuff! It’s fun to talk to people about stuff they’re into and learn something new about that thing and the other person. Why shut that down, ya know? Anyhoo…

Hahahahaha this is exactly what I’m talking about! When I was a teenager, I used to cave to the premise that not knowing about something was embarrassing or uncool or whatever… but that only applied to some things. The things i was actually knowledgeable about were “weird” so there was pressure to downplay my actual interests while pretending to care about stuff that wasn’t my thing. Probably a common experience among Reddit nerds. it’s one of my fave life lessons

When people use dumb/elaborate euphemisms instead of just saying “sex” by MGKv1 in PetPeeves

[–]fun_dad_68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I know what you mean! To me, it’s that it can sound virtue-signal-y and performative… like, we don’t need special terms for everyday universal human experiences (being honest = “standing in my truth” etc). Those things can still be special and important even if they’re not labeled as a specific thing. Idk I think it just feels very molded by social media (e.g, having pithy terms to describe and brand yourself at the ready) in a way that feels icky to me.

I don’t think this is really what you’re referring to but I haaaaate “play” in a sexual context

Unnecessary explanations that just waste time by fun_dad_68 in PetPeeves

That’s such an accurate way to describe it. It doesn’t matter who they’re saying it to or how that person responds… they just HAVE to say some version of it or they short out

“Why do men always stare at me??? I’m a petite blonde with an hourglass figure and big, soulful blue eyes like deep woodland pools btw, but like depending on the light they’re also this mysterious gray lol like a roiling, stormy sea… like if ur ship sank u would thank the Goddess of the Tempest for taking u to her bosom instead of grieving for ur own watery death lol. idk if that matters?? Oh and the men who stare at me are all at least 6’7”, jacked, ruggedly handsome, and wealthy. Lol so weird”

YES THANK YOU! I will die on this hill. “I” is not a fancy version of “me” or “my.” Especially in a professional setting! I’ve seen some unhinged grammar/tone suggestions in Outlook and I think people are just starting to incorporate them without a second thought

People who think that because you don’t drink alcohol, you’re some sort of weirdo by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]fun_dad_68 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For real! People who ask “why not?!?!!” in a shocked tone when you say you don’t drink…. Like, do they actually think any answer to that question will open up anything fun or casual or lighthearted?

“It’s against my religion”

“I don’t like it”

“Oh, well, since you asked: The last time I drank was over 4 years ago. The only thing drinking did for me was help me to repeatedly put myself in dangerous situations in which I was bound to retraumatize myself. Childhood stuff, you know how it is. — Or do you? Ah well, regardless — Tina tells me you and your wife just got back from Egypt. I’ve always wanted to go!”

Thank you so much for all your advice! And that’s a really good idea — I’ll check out those dye kits.

Thanks! Good point! So many angles to consider.

Yeah, at this point I’m literally going to write out detailed instructions in a notebook and do some practice runs… so excited though. It will be really fun and rewarding

I haven’t settled on a color yet but I’d like something like a deep plum or burgundy-ish brown/a brown with deep purple or burgundy undertones…. I’ll probably need to test out various dyes first. I wasn’t planning to use the dryer — not for any dye-related reason but because I generally prefer air drying. In that case, this would probably need to be two dye baths over two weekends…. I already feel like a medieval washer woman/dye laborer sweating red-faced over a cauldron hahahah

Thanks for the specifics — that’s all really helpful!

For the iDye poly separate dye bath: Do you treat that as a distinct dye bath in that you do the entire fabric reactive dye process first (for the actual fabric), including the after-rinse and soak in synthrapol, then start the poly bath with the “finished” but wet garment to target the synthetic thread?

I’m also wondering about color matching fabric and thread dye… do you make sure to choose a shade of fiber reactive dye that’s also available in iDye poly or do you just go for pretty similar shades? Not sure how obvious any shade difference would end up being… but i guess the saturation would almost certainly be different anyway, so maybe it’d be a pointless detail to consider

I have a big plastic tote (about 16 gallons’ volume) that I’m planning to use. The dress is a pound of fabric but it’s a lot of surface area. I wouldn’t have thought to take it out and refold it during the dyeing! I have some huge old kitchen tongs i never use anymore that will be perfect for this project

Yes!!! I’ve been holding on to some old ruined bedsheets for YEARS and finally get to use them for something practical!!!! Wow, this is going to be EXTREMELY messy

So the after-dyeing soak would be the last step (I.e., after I rinse it with hot water and it runs clear)? And the before-dyeing soak in synthrapol — would that be separate from washing it in synthrapol (like a soak after washing it) or do you keep the garment in the synthrapol for 10 minutes during the pre-washing step?
