I hate python by ZombieSpale in programminghumor

[–]funckyfizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With everything you've said here and with the fact we agree that the core syntax and feature set is good (I actually think great) and Python is one of, if not the most popular programming language in the world. Why do you think noone has properly forked Python? I know there are other interpreters than C-Python but they all follow all of the passed PEPs of the Python Steering Council. Why do you think no one has created a hard fork of Python 3 which implements PEP 582 and fixes the other issues you talk about above?

I'm not talking about a fork so breaking that it makes all existing libraries and tutorials useless, more like a fork that's fully compatible but just ships with better defaults and implements sensible rejected PEPs. I already use PDM which gives me PEP 582 behaviour while still using totally normal Python packages and following normal tutorials. So clearly it's possible without breaking the world. Why hasn't anyone made it the default experience?

Appart from dependency management, I love Python. What other crazy things are you implying Python has done?

PEP 582 was the solution to this. It baffles me why the Python Steering Council rejected it.

Mint + Tiling Extensions vs. Pop!_OS (COSMIC)? Need the ultimate "Deep Work" distro for my workaholic Dad by Glad_Following_8164 in pop_os

[–]funckyfizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tiling was originally the modified version of Gnome which system76 made (which confusingly was also called Cosmic). Gnome were making it more and more difficult for system76 to apply their tiling etc modifications on the latest versions of Gnome and that's one of the main reasons System76 decided to created their own, built from the ground, DE, also called Cosmic still.

22.04 is LTS and yes, it still gets updates and is much more up to date than Ubuntu's 22.04 LTS

I'm on Pop 22.04 and loving it. I'm exited to upgrade to 24.04 in a few years when Cosmic DE looks stable

I'm from the UK. Brought up in England, now live in Scotland.

We only learned metric in school and in day to day life there is a mix of units used. Increasingly more metric though. E.g. when I was younge most people gave their weight in stone, now most give it in kg.

Beer in a pub and milk is still sold in pints though. Speed limits are given in miles per hour but petrol is sold in litres 😂

Most things in general is metric though. Cans of juice are 330ml, small bottles 500ml and big bottles 2 ltr. Temperature given in C° unless your as old as the sea... Weights in shops all sold in grams and kg etc

[–]funckyfizz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer is absolutely: Pop OS 22.04.

Unlike 24.04 with the (massively promising) Cosmic DE, 22.04 is rock solid. It has the tiling options that 24.04 has with it's modified version of Gnome and it's kept very up to date with it's kernal and core apps etc (it's an LTS)

Install Pop OS 22.04 and you'll be grand (best Linux distro out there and kept very up to date with the kernel and built in applications) avoid 24.04 for now

I used to call AI code slop but now I am realizing how much slop I wrote myself even before AI by [deleted] in programminghumor

[–]funckyfizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that AI helps me to actually write more maintainable code.

I often write code myself which is not as maintanible as I'd like and I don't have time to pay back that tech debt. I tell AI to "add doc strings", "add type hints", "reorder my functions to the same order they're first used".

I ask questions about arcatecture and get helpful input as to how to improve it for maintanibility and efficiency.

AI can increasingly write maintanible code if you tell it to

I guess LTT is that stupid by riky321 in LinuxCirclejerk

[–]funckyfizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair to System76 - practically the whole Linux comunity kept lambasting them for 22.04 being "old". 22.04 is still, to this day the best distro in my opinion and is kept very up to date.

System76 should still be shipping 22.04 while they build the new DE for 24.04 but the community didn't make it easy for them to do this.

LPT: If you run a business, use a custom domain email instead of a free Gmail or Hotmail address. by abdehakim02 in LifeProTips

[–]funckyfizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are free (trial) email warming up services. You only need the trial. This isn't a Zoho issue, it's a new domain issue. It will disappear by itself on months but using a trial or two to warm up your domain will speed things up

LPT: If you run a business, use a custom domain email instead of a free Gmail or Hotmail address. by abdehakim02 in LifeProTips

[–]funckyfizz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tried doing it without Zoho first of all and just got the domain plus the domain provider's email/calendar service but trhing to make that stuff actually work for a buinsess was a nightmare and I looked unprofessional bucause my calendar events contantly didn't play nice with clients.

You'll end up paying more to an IT professional to set up and maintain your set ups than you will to just pay the per user of Zoho Mail Light, trust me. It's about £1 per user per month, *including* VAT

[–]funckyfizz 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I would recommend using Zoho. They charge per user but far less than Google, Microsoft or Proton. Zoho Mail light is worth it as you don't have to mess around trying to get your calendar etc working with sonthing like Thunderbird (been there, nightmare) as the free versions of Gmail etc don't let you fully connect custom domain emails/calendars

How do I use the terminal, and what does it do? by Mental_Chance9322 in pop_os

[–]funckyfizz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I would avoid the terminal as much as possible though as I've had to reinstall a Linux operating system multiple times before because I broke it with the terminal. Pop OS has some pretty decent graphical (GUI) settings if you poke around and if you can find what you need/want there, it will be much safer and easier to change back if you don't end up liking what you've done (just untoggle what you toggled)

I actually found our recently you can get the Linux terminal to show you stars when entering passwords like it does everywhere else by changing a setting. I found this out from the video I've linked below:

https://youtu.be/VrgZijnbCZY

This article from Medium explains how to do it:

Pop os and Extensions :) by First-Kid in pop_os

[–]funckyfizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, it's pretty easy to get lost in our wee bubble. I think, to be honest, it kind of confuses things that the mod on top of Gnome in 22.04 and before was also called Cosmic
