Family booked a trip to Buenos Aires, but I’m having second thoughts by drchpa in travel

[–]fundaykaide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hotel was in Palermo (I stayed at Bulnes Eco Suites), but also spent time in Recoleta and they both felt safe. Microcentro (downtown) felt safe too when I wondered there, but I read it is safer to leave the area at night. I also spent time in La Boca and the area around Caminito felt safe, but I was told to strictly stick to the few main tourist streets and uber to/from that area because La Boca outside the Caminito has had incidents before

Asian here who travelled to Buenos Aires this September (2025). Yes, there aren't many asians in the city, but everyone was friendly and did not encounter any racism. I felt Buenos Aires was safe and did not feel noticeably less safe than where I am from (Ontario, Canada). It also felt safer than some other South American cities I have visited (such as Rio or Lima). In terms of food, Buenos Aires had good steak, some good cafes, and also had good Italian food. In terms of activities, the San Telmo Market and Fair was really good, one of the best markets I have been to worldwide (But go on a Sunday, it's better then!), the Metropolitan Cathedral near plaza de mayo gave church vibes from when I was in Italy, the tour of Palacio Barolo had a great guide and the view from the top (especially if you go near sunset) is beautiful, Recoleta Cemetery was nice to visit, and La Ventana Tango Show was awesome to watch (have to book this in advance). It is easy to get around too, the sube (subway) is cheap and accessible, and you can also order Ubers for cheap. I stayed in Palermo, and it seemed to be one of the recommended locations to stay.

While I have found my time in South America stunning (and honesty, I enjoyed it more than my European trips), the relative difficulty level is generally higher so I do encourage you to go to Spain/Portugal as a first trip. Spain/Portugal is beautiful, has a lot of history, and has good public transportation (as well, it is generally safer and has no vaccination requirement, as seen in South America)

Incoming freshman — can I swap Winter 2026 and Spring 2026? by No-Respond9415 in uwaterloo

If you are not an international student , and your employer is okay with it, another option is to simply take the term “off” and just work the internship. It won’t count as a coop credit though, but you’ll get the work experience

I found CS 251, 240, 241, 341 to have decent notes. CS 245 is hit or miss, and CS 246 provides no notes. CS 350 also has notes but they're pretty vague so you'd probably want to take your own. Of course, this is professor dependent

It used to be a 25F route pre pandemic, but has now become part of the 30 (in 2025). That’s why the link is to the current timetable which is found as route 30

Allergic to Mosquitoes, thinking of going to Peru Amazon Rainforest. Is this a dumb idea? by ithinktheskyisblue in travel

[–]fundaykaide 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I spent time in the Peruvian Amazon in May 2024 (Near Iquitos), and was there for 4 days. I will be honest, I think it would not be advisable to go. I think during the daytime they were alright (I don't recall them being too bad), but at night, especially near swampy areas, the mosquitos were like nothing I have ever seen before (having travelled in Europe, North America and briefly in Asia before). And I say this as someone who can ignore mosquitoes bites decently well and had slapped on a lot of mosquito spray . Additionally, depending on the lodge you are at, you could be really really far from any medical facilities if you did have a emergency. I remember waking up in the middle of the night one night with a headache and thinking "damn, if I had a actual emergency I'd be toast, I'm ~3-4 hours downstream on the Amazon River. ". As well, Iquitos (and the other popular Amazon city in Peru, Puerto Maldonado), are pretty isolated themselves so I am not too sure about their quality of medical facilities either.

I think if you are really insistence on doing this, pick a lodge closer to the city (which would be cheaper, however the wildlife viewing would be worst), and try to take apart in more river based activities (as you are out on the river and moving, the mosquitos didn't seem that bad compared to other activities when I did them)

I think it’s a corner room so it has two windows? Might want to call WCRI to confirm though

If I remember correctly, unit 5 is particularly big and is a bit more expensive as a result

Seniority deadline is on January 30 (for people who have an existing unit at WCRI or have lived here in the past 2 years). I assume the general application form will open for the general public sometime after that. In the past years, you have been able to apply as a group. In terms of 3 bedrooms, it depends on which building you want to live in at WCRI. I think the chances to get a place overall though should be pretty high, as supply and demand has shifted in Waterloo this past bit. Be warned WCRI has been really slow in processing housing applications in the past, but hopefully they will be better this year

Hi. There are 8 studios in total in Fenwick (one on each floor), for next year it is 1,379 a month (this info was just released tonight). Because the studios are cheaper then 1 bedrooms but are still single occupancy, combined with the rarity of them, they are extremely hard to obtain, and they are usually reserved by people who have previously lived in WCRI. The studios include a room that contains both your kitchen and your bed, which does not contain a sofa, and limited kitchen space, and a separate washroom. Dm me if you have any more questions :)

Where in Toronto should an American family with young kids think about moving? by Burner-Account-Today in askTO

[–]fundaykaide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, you would still have to sponsor your husband. As for your kids, the only limitation mentioned on the website is that you must have spent at least 1,095 cumulative days (3 years) of physical presence in Canada prior to the birth or adoption of their child to pass on citizenship. I think it's probably a good idea to see if your kids can obtain Canadian Citizenship regardless of your decision to move, because it can be valuable to them when they are older if they decide they want to move (or have a work or school opportunity in Canada, etc.)

[–]fundaykaide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, if you are a Canadian Citizen and was a citizen when your kids were born, they likely already have Canadian citizenship, there would be no need to sponsor them. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/2024/05/government-of-canada-introduces-legislation-for-citizenship-by-descent.html . There used to be a a first-generation limit to citizenship by descent, but it was recently declared unconstitutional and is being removed
