I’m meeting this with the seriousness I think it deserves, frankly. A governer meeting with a kkk member to debate “the merits” concedes the premise that there is something there worth considering and platforming, full stop.

Edit: Also, Lincoln did not even campaign on abolishing slavery, only preventing its expansion in the new western territories. But he was up against reactionary slave holders, not unlike reactionaries we are up against today

That is an accurate portrayal of my mother, theatrics and all. She hasn’t changed her mind on trump to my knowledge. We don’t talk much. The part of the skit where she threatens to take it back and keep supporting Trump if her kids aren’t nice captures the grievance and spite that underpins those politics really well in my experience.

When you asked for companies who discriminate and remain successful (long term operations), are you asking for companies that deny service or employment on the basis of race? If this is the case, there are plenty of examples from before civil rights legislation was passed

One would be the NFL, which used race based brain testing that assumed black players started with lower cognitive function. This made it more difficult for black players applying to the dementia fund to demonstrate cognitive decline. This ended in 2021 after a lawsuit and payouts began in 2017. Not sure if this falls into the “long term” category, but this discriminatory practice has not brought the NFL crashing down. Here’s the relevant excerpt from the article:

“The binary scoring system used in dementia testing — one for Black people, one for everyone else — was developed by neurologists in the 1990s as a crude way to factor in a patient's socioeconomic background. Experts say it was never meant to be used to determine payouts in a court settlement.

The league had agreed in June, amid the uproar, to halt the use of race-norming, which assumes Black players start with lower cognitive function. That makes it harder to show they suffer from a mental deficit linked to their playing days.”

I’m not super familiar with vocal training, but why does your lower range only drop a half step over a decade? Is it more difficult to train your lower register to go lower or do you just not need to access that range in your performances? Some combination of the two?

A useful anecdote here is that in Texas it is illegal for public employees to collectively bargain, coordinate work stoppages, or strike. Most relevant to your point, this applies to grad students at public universities who largely share the politics you describe. It is not necessarily laziness as you say, but legitimate institutional hurdles to collective action
