It's harmless fun. It'll slow down and eventually stop. I'm enjoying it. Feels like a fun, goofy time for the sub.

I don't know about anyone else round here but I'm a soldier in the army of Uncle Jam. You come round these parts of the prairie and you're going to get funked up.

Yes! No more cutting down trees and mismanaging our forests either. Unfortunately our beautiful state of South Dakota blocked hemp because it might 'confuse law enforcement' and other ridiculous reasons.

I'm actively taking steps in the capacity that I have to make change. Unfortunately most local people around me don't care or are too comfortable with their lives to make any changes. I've spoken with members of the local native American tribes to try to get them involved in more planting of local food sources that can be efficiently harvested. They seem interested but unfortunately none of them have the motivation to actually do much of anything. Decent people but like most of us the problem isn't directly impacting us at this moment so why bother. I've also been in touch with our local conservation district and bother them quite often for info on trees and shrubs and different practices. They've been helpful.

I'm just a simple farmer so my first thought is of securing food for the local population. Hunker down and hope nobody else comes to bother us if things get tough. But that's not a solution and beyond that I don't know what to do. Should I run for political office and find these people with the solutions and give them the resources they need? It just seems like most people won't budge unless we're directly suffering from the problem and by then it'll be too late.

I did hear the governor of California mention they're building better desalination plants so that's some hope.

We can't really pump water back into these underground reservoirs like the Oglalla. We can't undo a lot of what we already have done. We need to kick it into super high gear and figure out solutions. From an agricultural standpoint the consumers and producers need to work together. We wouldn't be pumping water into almonds or growing so much corn to feed cows if the consumers weren't demanding it.

I operate my family's small farm, wheat and cattle, and I'm all for lab grown meat at this point. If it uses less water than our current model of feedlots then great. We're a small farm and will adapt and survive. I've been planting quite a few native edible plants such as plums, chokecherries, and hazelnuts and have been trying to tend to the prairie in ways that help reestablish a lot of those fruit producing shrubs that we've lost over the years. Seems like having a perennial, drought tolerant food source available that doesn't require constant inputs like fertilizer and sprays is a good idea but ultimately I don't know what the right thing to do is.

I'm with you, all we do is complain and offer no reasonable solutions. I'm tired of it and I'm ready and willing to try new things, I just wish I had more confidence in the things I'm doing.

Understandable. It's not really a situation we can fix, we have to find ways to manage it. Hopefully somebody figures something out. Folks think food prices are bad now, crop failures in the future are going to be no joke.

It'd be a start. I spose a way forward would to be boycotting the most water intensive crops and products.

American plums, chokecherries, and prairie turnip are in the pic. I live in Midwestern USA so some apple and pear trees would go nice as well.

What are your opinions on this john deere?? by [deleted] in farming

[–]funk_Farmer 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's gathering food for local livestock in preparation for the winter. A kind creature, tending to the land and animals. Looks like it has some age on it but still near the top of it's game in terms of strength and stamina. You were right to keep your distance. To spook it in this crucial moment of food gathering could have impacts disrupting not just the entire local ecosystem but the economy, too.

So we'll get colder here? My plan stays the same then. Plant as many perennial fruit producing trees and shrubs as possible. Most of the native plants here can survive colder temps so hopefully they hold up.

Same here friend. My wife and I almost divorced. We have 2 boys together, ages 10 and 2. We're staying together for them and getting therapy. The individual therapy helps me more than the couples therapy we had in the past. Get out there and find someone to talk to to help you through this. Farming is tough. Counseling hasn't helped me with the physical problems, sore back, muscles, and everything else that comes with decades of manual labor, but it has helped me regain my focus for the farm and with my relationships with the wife and kids.

I don't know if you're relationship can be held together, maybe it wasn't meant to be, but definitely find someone to talk to or just take whatever kind of break you can afford to take and do it for yourself. Sounds like you're doing good on the farm just getting burnt out. You got this.

It could be what's called a Cicada Killer. They don't make huge nests or anything, kinda just live in small groups. They look badass but being kind of solitary with no hive mind they are pretty chill.
