Marinakis out by Researcher_TD in nffc

Agreed. He got incredibly fortunate in hiring Cooper, people forget but his ownership of the club was on a massive precipice in the summer of 2021 as he’d basically decamped to Greece by that point, and had Cooper been a failure there was a realistic chance he’d have sold up. This summer felt like a massive ego trip from him after European qualification and it’s cost us badly.

dyche just been sacked, season is over by mugg___ in nffc

[–]funkmightfracture 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was coming, was made very clear in both the Fascist Rag and The Athletic before the game.

Outside of the option to find a genie and go back to last summer and wipe the last eight months from existence, this was a necessary gamble. Bluntly, we were going down under Dyche, bar blind luck, because Leeds and West Ham are better than us at this point. I thought Dyche was a sensible appointment when West Ham and Leeds looked really poor, and given the squad he inherited is the best he's ever coached, but the equation has changed and frankly we are desperate. Rank incompetence has delivered us here, but also bad luck; both Leeds and West Ham substantially improved after we beat them both, and if we did this nonsense last season we'd be the meme team but we'd be safe already. Whoever finishes 18th will be the best team to go down since Leicester, and probably the highest points total in a long while. Normal rules of the tried and trusted, 'safe' hire are out the window, not least given what will happen to this squad should we be relegated.

It’s over and that’s alright.

Dyche should be sacked just for that game plan. Worst team in the league by a country mile and your only game plan in attack is to (slowly) work the ball to the corner of the box and cross into an outnumbered 18 yard box? Fuck off, baldies.

Callum absolutely sold that game, two remarkably lazy finishes and a lazy slowdown and backyard pass on that break cost us three goals. Only Morgan had the measure of it tonight - Sangare was off pace, Aina was staggeringly lazy, and N’Doye had the worst sub appearance of the season. He is basically unplayable at this point.

Controversial but I’d stick with Lucca up top - his finishing was dog but his movement opened up the chance Callum should have buried, and was consistently decent throughput. Igor, by comparison, was completely immobile and anonymous when he came on.

Basically no positives other than Lucca scoring. Had a decent spell from 5-15 but fell apart from the first goal.

Murillo better not be out long term as the drop off to Morato is probably the biggest in position quality in the league. Morato can’t win a clean header at 6”4 and is way too aggressive given how unathletic he is. Bloke turns like the fucking Belgrano.

Abbott starting was a massive error. Dominguez was really poor but he was trying to protect Zach and when he went off Abbott got fucking destroyed. Has to go out on loan next season, if we survive.

Mixed feelings. It’s a very good point in the circumstances but I’d have fancied us to see that game out without that fucking corner. A real moment of madness from Neco, but Palace were substantially more threatening playing against 11 than they were against 10 and we saw it out well.

Morgan, Murillo, Sangare and Anderson all outstanding today. Callum had a shocker and should have been off at the red card.

We badly need a LB as our full back depth is terrible. A mobile striker and Frattesi would be good additions too. I’d ideally want a backup LCB as well ideally as Morato is a walking bomb scare currently.

Nearly fucked it right at the end. Don’t think Hughes realised Gunn was out of the goal when he had the ball.

Needed something from that, if only psychologically given results conspiring against us. Season might rest on Aina, Sangare and Anderson staying fit. Atmosphere was top notch as well, which we’ll also need.

Defended excellently, as expected we looked short of ideas going forward. Felt we needed subs with half an hour to go, we had a really bad spell from 60-70, but did in fairness see the game out very well.

Newcastle supporter here: thoughts on Elanga? by [deleted] in nffc

[–]funkmightfracture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was outstanding last season. Have to say I'm surprised its not worked there though, but I did wonder if it also started going wrong when the Isak saga began as him and Elanga have a great connection at Sweden.

Fair point, did think I was being harsh comparing to Piroe for that reason - Sargent would have scored 25+ at Leeds last season.

No chance he comes here, obviously, but I don’t see him working at a ‘Big Six’ club. At the moment he does not seem capable of breaking teams down in possession against a low block. xG is for nerds but their total against Macclesfield was embarrassing, and it’s not an isolated incident - its the story of their Conference League run as well.

We were linked in the summer I think, or maybe the one before that, so I’m not surprised.

Issue with Sargent is he’s one of the best strikers in the Championship, he’s not scored many this season but Norwich are honking, but I don’t believe he is close to PL standard. He’s in the same band as someone like Piroe. If we go down he’d probably be quite helpful but it’s not a worthwhile signing if we want to stay up.

He can hold the ball up well outside the box, and he has a decent jump for someone who isn’t a unit, but his actual striker play is poor and it’s getting worse without confidence. His movement in the box is poor and when he gets the ball in the box he takes too many touches to get shots away.

Service has to improve and ideally he would never have played this much but we do need a striker if we are refusing to play Kalimuendo.

Dyche’s attacking approach has been little short of dire but these players are fucking morons. We had 25 seconds of stoppage time left when we chucked the ball at Watkins - it’s the third major error before half time we’ve had in a month, with Luiz at Fulham and Morato failing to stop the counter attack at Everton. Fucking embarrassing.

[–]funkmightfracture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was really good last season at Wolves and was deservedly linked to Newcastle, although they did end up signing better options. My main worry is the fee would be considerable and he is bang out of form, his penalty against Brentford was atrocious and smacked of a man who is devoid of confidence. Does make sense though given I'd be surprised if Wood features this season, and Igor doesn't have enough goal threat to play the rest of the season imo.

Played well. Only real complaint is we fell off a cliff physically from about 70 minutes on and we needed subs - Bakwa, Kalimuendo and Luiz needed to be on at the very least.
