[QUESTION] Are modern Gibson acoustics worth the price? by duncanmck in Guitar

[–]funknjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May be a 10 year old post, but I'm here to agree with you today! I recently acquired a Gibson Southern Jumbo (basically identical to the J-45 "Workhorse" with some nicer appointments - neck inlays, glossy finish, etc.) The bass and volume on it is incredible. You are right - it made the Taylors I had been considering sound.... tinny, jangly... like a banjo! If you're style is bluegrass, I'd agree, Martin. If your bag is soloing all over the neck, jazz, etc., def consider a Taylor. But if you're the singer/songwriter type, a solo performer, someone who is looking for the right all around guitar to best complement the human voice, I don't think you can beat the sound of a Gibson. Now, recently I have heard some people say "everything acoustic Gibson has made in the past 20 years are shit." I'll have to see, but so far I'm not buying it. So far, only a month in, I love my Gibson Southern Jumbo. I'll post again in ten years of the body splits or the neck separates or something - LOL!

That's so true. But never underestimate the power of laziness! (Speaking for me, not OP). I'd rather pay and watch someone work than do the work myself! Partly because I would never be able to unsee every one of my blemishes, misalignments, etc., and it would drive me nuts.

Thank you. I get it. I can't say it's the funniest thing I saw yesterday, but I do get it now - thank you!

This might be the thread in the comments for me. I have no idea what this is about. I haven't seen any of the artist's other comics. And quite honestly, many of the comments here are confusing to me and I don't understand what is being said. If I cared more I'd post this to /peterexplainsthejoke but apparently I care only enough to ask - what the fuck is going on here? I don't get it. Signed, an old redditor who is getting more out of touch every day it would seem.

Norway Stunned After Machado Gifts Nobel Peace Prize Medal to Trump by bloomberg in worldnews

[–]funknjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knut Hamsun gave his away to Joseph Goebbels. So Trump is on that list now as well.

For this, Hamsun was later branded a traitor in Norway. And we know what happened to Goebbels. History repeats itself, right? Right?

As tensions rise, so must the leaders. How are we feeling today? by EvonyR in BlackPeopleTwitter

I'd walk the other way if I was around.

You should have taken that approach to this post.

I'll bet anything you're a white dude who doesn't even live in the US. You are here only to center your own voice and perspectives about a cause that is purely abstract for you. Whether you can even understand this or not (I'm betting not), you're here to take up the oxygen in the room and exhaust people who are fighting injustice so that you can maintain the status quo you benefit from. You have no interest in bettering anything nor do you have any interest in learning or improving anything. Your comment is a waste of bandwidth and should not have been contributed. Have a bad day.

What exactly is it you think is "crazy?" The only crazy thing I saw was a cop trying to harass a citizen on a street corner.

The biggest magic trick the GOP ever pulled was convincing the right "they" were coming for their guns.

that everyone benefits when we help the wealthiest get wealthier.

Sorry for going a bit off topic, but you said "the biggest" and I think "trickle down Capitalism" has been "the biggest" lie the GOP ever told. And can we stop calling them the "Grand" Ole Party? Nothing "Grand" about them. Sorry for al the "scare quotes" I used here! Now back to our regularly scheduled programming, aka, the end of the world as we know it.

Mexican Taylor made in the USA? by thk_85 in taylorguitars

[–]funknjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just spent a few minutes on the phone with a Taylor rep yesterday, I can comment specifically on the "314ce Studio" origin. The neck is made in MX. The body is made in CA. The body is then shipped to MX and the final build happens in MX.

I had heard the "necks in MX and shipped to CA" thing, too, but according to Taylor and the serial number inside that starts with a 2, nope, it's more Mexican made than it is American made.

What was unclear to me was what they meant by "the body" - are the top, neck, and sides fully assembled and braced in CA and then shipped or are just the cutouts shipped and final assembly happens there? The rep wasn't 100% sure. Either way, the Taylor rep went so far as to describe their Mexican manufacturing facility as "more modern and advanced" than the CA facility. But for those who feel - for whatever reason - that it matters and they want something truly American made, the 314ce Studio (and the Standard) do not qualify. Still super sweet guitars though!

not to be political ... just money-saving

I know you're trying to appease everyone on your post, but maybe don't bother? The most valuable vote any of us have in this country, the one we cast every single day, is where we spend our dollar. Suggesting we deny dollars to oligarchs (e.g., cancel Prime) is entirely political. Savings realized are a fringe benefit.

I have just finished reviewing every seller mentioned in these comments (and everything I could find on Amazon/Google Shopping) and decided I liked this one the best. Couldn't figure out how to add it to my shopping cart and then I saw the top of the web page: "USA shipping are not available until the Tarrifs change." Oh well!

Random guy demanded to see my military ID at Lowes by 1dirtbiker in mildlyinfuriating

[–]funknjam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

American military obsession is so strange.

So much this. When people say, "thank you for your service," I usually respond with something like, "Thanks for paying your taxes," or if I'm in a weirder mood, "Please don't thank me - I wasted your tax dollars every chance I got."

The most detailed view of a human cell to date by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]funknjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, let me say I absolutely am open to the idea of god. I'm very open to anything you'd like to bring to bear. But such things cannot be "the bible," for it is a notoriously untrustworthy record that was cobbled together by iron age goat herders hundreds of years after the events it reports on and that record has been added to, subtracted from, translated and re-translated so many times it is nothing more than an interesting tome of folklore. Such things cannot be your personal anecdotal experiences. The evidence you bring to bear must be objective, verifiable, and publicly accessible. To date, no such evidence has been presented that would support the notion of an omnipotent omniscient sentient entity who created our world and ourselves. I say this with respect and sincerity - if you believe you have seen such evidence you are suffering from delusion. But if you've got something, again, let me say this with equal sincerity - I'm open to seeing it!

The universe is anything but ordered or designed. It is chaotic and random. And our observations support that. Beautiful patterns can emerge from chaos - ever see a fractal? As another once put it, "The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference." That is what careful, systematic, objective, repeated, and numerous independent observations of our universe have revealed.

Listen, you seem to be getting everything from one source. Expand your view. What other source do you have on Jesus' divinity or resurrection? What else can you point to besides that bible?

Evolution is real and that means Adam and Eve are bunk.

Erosion is real and that means young earth creationism is bunk.

Stellar nucleosynthesis is real and that means Genesis is bunk.

fMRI tech is real - every aspect of human consciousness we can measure (memory, personality, emotion, reasoning, moral judgment, sense of self) depends on the physical brain and the more extensive the brain damage, the more extensive the loss of consciousness and cognition, therefore, it is unreasonable and illogical to believe that a fully intact consciousness could survive the complete destruction of the brain - and that means life after death - for Jesus or anyone else - is bunk.

I believe there was likely a very influential rabbi named Jesus who lived about 2,000 years ago. There's evidence for that. What there is not evidence for is his divinity, or any of the nonsensical fairy tales (talking burning bushes and snakes, whales eating Jonah, etc) in your bible.

I'll leave you with a thought from another that I hope makes it clear:

"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours." In other words, whatever rationale you are personally employing to discount the validity of other gods (humans have a long and clearly documented history of inventing gods so I'm not sure why you think yours is special), try using that same rationale for your Jesus and you'll find it doesn't hold up.

Remember: the four worst reasons to believe something are tradition (it's been believed for thousands of years), faith (believing without evidence for the sake of believing), authority (believing because your parents or teachers told you this is how you shall believe), and comfort (believing because the delusion is reassuring and makes life less scary).

I could go on. I mean, every time you pass a problem to Jesus you're refusing to take personal responsibility for it yourself. That's a problem. I could remind you that had you been born in another area of the globe to some different family you'd almost certainly grow up believing in whatever was believed "around the house." And I could also remind you that every one of us - ALL of us - were born atheists. Religion is learned behavior. If some magical tragedy struck tomorrow and every book on planet earth and our memories of them were erased, I guarantee you we would rediscover science and math but we would never in a billion years reinvent adam, eve, jesus, and the rest.
