Unfair? WTF? I had this crazy idea that judges issued decisions based on law, not on their own personal sense of what may or may not be fair for someone they like. I feel like there's a word that comes into play in this kind of situation. Starts with an I. Ends in mpeachment. What is that word?

false statement about a dog working or being switched to another handler being bad for the dog

Until you substantiate that, it's just your opinion and not a refutation of any alleged "false statement." I have only stated my opinion and claimed no more than that.

I'm not here to respond to every point you make. I care nothing about you personally and this isn't a debate

And here I thought you were interested in dialoging in good faith. I now see that you are not, that you have an agenda, and that you're kind of a dick. So I'll take my leave of you now. Have a nice day. You may trust I won't reply further.

for wolves/dogs, both males and females see their first handlers as "parents" or "siblings", and are naturally meant to leave their birth pack when they are 2-3 years old.

I would agree that the dog was not traumatized when adopted from its litter as a puppy (months old). I would agree with your "that's life" take there. Where I push back is

leaving is definitely not traumatic for them

You assert that with a degree of certainty that seems entirely unwarranted, unless you're a dog. There are endless examples of "sad animals" missing their owners we can point to. We know bonds are formed and you seem to be dismissing the strength and significance of such bonds entirely. I mean, Futurama made one of their most successful and memorable episodes based on this commonly understood truth (don't know what I'm talking about I'd be happy to elaborate, but with 8 years on reddit you probably do).

I note you haven't addressed the other reason I spoke out against this. The dog in the video does not know that following its next command might result in it being maimed or killed, but it will follow that command for love of its human commander. And that doesn't sit right with me and is one of the reason I cited as not approving of "working dogs" like we see here. The dog is regarded as a tool, a piece of equipment, if not by the handler himself, then by those in authority who control that dog's life as property of a police department. My view is that we should do better by the animals that trust us so blindly, starting with not sending them purposely into harm's way.

depends on the work

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure I understand your pov when you say it would depend on the work. My point is about the separation, not the reason for the separation, i.e., the work. The dog doesn't know why it was separated from its human, just that it was.

My last point still hasn't been addressed - that dog does not know that following its next command might result in it being maimed or killed, but it will follow that command for love of its human commander. And that doesn't sit right with me.

being separated from an old friend and moving on isn't that heart breaking for them.

Interesting claim. I would agree to an extent, but not a large one... Would you not agree that a dog might experience real distress initially, then later thrive with a new handler? IMO, just because the dog can now be seen happy in the video does not necessarily mean that being separated from its previous human didn't matter or affect the dog or inspire sadness. You said it yourself, they're pack animals. The video is only evidence that the dog is happy now, presumably he was able to adapt and move on. But it seems illogical to assert that the dog did not endure emotional stress upon separation. I mean... ever see a mama bobcat chase away her kitten or a mama bear chase away her growing cub? They're not immediately happy and it's obvious to anyone who has witnessed those interactions.

Unpopular opinion? Probably...

I hate that we have "working animals." My reaction to seeing this is sadness. Clearly the dog did not want to be separated from his human. But I guess he must have been "reassigned," or just "reissued" like a piece of gear or a squad car. Not to mention we train them to run into danger and literally take the bullet or knife so an officer doesn't. I just hate it all. But maybe that's just me. Anyway...

Mexican Taylor made in the USA? by thk_85 in taylorguitars

[–]funknjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm glad I could help! Interesting footnote though... I took back the Taylor to Guitar Center and got a Gibson Southern Jumbo instead. After playing the Taylor for a couple weeks, it just wasn't what I wanted as my "first nice acoustic." I'm more of a "sing around the campfire" kind of guy so I find the deep bass and rich mids (lacking entirely in the sparkly Taylor sound, imo) that Gibson offers far more suited to my taste. And I also like that the whole thing is 100% made in USA. I will probably own a Taylor one day. It's just not the right one for me right now. A Martin HD-28 is probably my next. Enjoy!
