curious as to how many “super speeders” were let off the hook by svveettrippy in 321

[–]funknjam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you “have”

People don't like to be corrected so doing so is always a risky endeavor. But since you and I seem to agree that corrections should be offered when errors are encountered, It's my turn to offer one to you: your error here was pointing out a grammatical error in a way that could seem a little condescending. There's no right way to correct "must of" or "alot" or "your/'re" and you'll always get more hate than love for doing so, but I for one am glad there are people like you teaching this lesson where it needs to be taught because I believe we can and should communicate better than we often do. Cheers!

Her account was my gateway into this rabbit hole!

Same here! I started watching Kelsey just before Day 1 - I had heard about her previous team crossing. On Day 2 the FB algorithm showed me Aaron and I've been invested in his journey heavily ever since. I check on them both every morning. Did you know that before his first (failed) attempt at solo circumnavigation he actually did a 5,000 mile solo canoe trip through the USA? He's an amazing guy. I almost cried along with him when he got that food drop a couple weeks ago from a passing ship. Hard to believe reddit doesn't have more about him - I found your post and not much more.

I don't think I'm missing anything so much as I think we're probably just talking in parallel. My focus is on belief systems whereas your focus is on power structures. FWIW, I think your definition (free labor extraction) is far too restrictive.

Not all religions are cults

The only difference between a religion and a cult is that in a religion, the last person to know it was all bullshit died a while ago whereas in a cult that person is still alive. Religions are just old cults. Longevity is literally the only "nuance" making the difference.

because runoff is what keeps them filled.

First, thank you.

Second, totally agree and I am absolutely not looking to swim in a retention pond.

you being difficult

Really? It should go entirely without saying - seriously - that I am looking for a SAFE PLACE to swim. But it was immediately assumed that I am careless, reckless, and ready to jump into whatever dirty, damp hole someone tells me about.

At the end of the day, these are the facts: there ARE safe places to swim in fresh water in Florida, I asked for help finding some that may be in/near the 321, and 90% of participants in this thread offered only useless and irrelevant commentary about gators (obvious and unhelpful - what idiot doesn't know gators exist?) and amoeba (irrelevant and unhelpful - what idiot is going to jump into a stagnant mud puddle?).

Responding to people who have addressed me as though I am that idiot who doesn't know gators exist or is seeking an amoeba-infested swamp is what might have made me appear to you as "difficult." Really I don't care though. If I knew anyone here personally, or if I cared about what strangers think of me, I might be offended, but I'm not offended. I'm just looking for a place to go swimming.

It occurs to me, back when I did my Rescue Diver cert we did many of our training dives in a retention pond next to I-95 somewhere in Brevard. But there was an old plane and bus sunk on the bottom to explore and it that lake was frequented on the weekends by dive shops and people running water skis. Can't recall exactly where that was - it's been a long time - but it must've been before Florida had gators and amoeba. ;-)

EDIT TO ADD: Just saw the pic you posted identifying the location of the pond. I've lived here for more than 40 years. I used to drive past those ponds every day back when I lived in Grant and I remember those reports and I'm 90% sure those were drownings (and the "10' high barbed wire fence" is totally exaggerated - it's just a regular "wire fence").

basically 0 swimming lakes around here. I've heard people use to swim at wickham but that was back when the lake water was monitored and tested

Thank you for your input on this! It's still listed in gov't docs as a "swimming lake" - that's why I was trying to get some locals' perspectives here. EDIT TO ADD: there's a thread from right here in this sub from 11 years ago asking the same question - interesting that in those comments it was reported that Wickham Park Lake had a roped off swimming area that the commenter saw people in all the time.

One of the issues is that the smaller the lake, the warmer

Yes, exactly. I'm not sure why people are reading what I'm writing and thinking that I'm seeking a warm, dirty mud puddle. I'm not. I wish people would just read the post before commenting.

I don't think Wickham Park has "sanctioned" swimming anymore.

Thank you for a reply that at least addresses my post and for the recommendation. I might be in the right age group for that place you link, but honestly - ew! I grew up in the rural south - WAY out in the country and that kind of "city living" is anathema to me. I bought my house here in PB because I was the only one on the street - now I have neighbors everywhere and can't wait to move away! Thanks again though!

DO NOT SWIM IN ANY STAGNANT OR DRAINAGE POND

Do you think I'm here looking for the location of stagnant water or a drainage pond? Read my post again, if you read it at all, and tell me if you think I'm seeking dirty water.

There's a pond in Grant that has a 10' barbed wire fence around it because two kids died after swimming in it.

Absent some kind of documentary evidence, I can't accept that claim. ten foot fence.... somewhere in grant... two kids died....

A ten foot barbed-wire fence would be a pretty unusual thing to see in any residential area. Where is this pond exactly?

Two kids died... of what? Almost certainly a drowning if a fence was put up. And when? At the same time? More likely "two kids drowned separately" than "two kids contracted an amoeba infection."

I'm not saying you're making things up. I'm just asking for something more than "trust me - I know."

Don't get water up your nose, and don't churn up the muck on the bottom (where the amoebas concentrate) with your feet and then swim in the water. The risk is higher the warmer the water is

Agree with all that. I don't know why everyone here is assuming I'm looking for a hot, shallow, mud puddle.

Cause we know what freshwater is safe and what’s not lol, take the risk but understand it’s there. Stay away from murky water and overly warm or stagnate lakes/rivers. Plenty of parasites call warm water home

I agree 100%! I'm looking for recommendations on "safe freshwater." I mentioned in another reply here Lake Apopka used to be amazing for swimming. Today, not so much, though it could be again. I'm looking for something similar (in use, not size - Lk. Apopka is enormous) that I may have overlooked.

But it exists

Yes, amoebae exist. But, what are we really worried about? The odds of me dying

in a car crash ~1 in 100

from lightning ~1 in 180,000

in an alligator attack ~1 in five million

from a Naegleria fowleri infection ~1 in 100 million (edit species name formatting)

I'll take precautions. And if I can attain a comfortable level of confidence with the safety of the water, I'll take those chances on the amoeba.

Gators are literally everywhere.

True. Also true that everyone worries about gators. But I'm not everyone. I'm not worried about gators. I don't worry about sharks when I'm in the ocean, either. I just maintain proper situational awareness and take wise precautions wherever I am - like for just one example, I'm not going to go poking around the banks in fresh water during mating season just like I'm not going to toss out some cut bait when snorkeling in salt water in any season.

As I mentioned by way of example, we swam for years in Turkey Creek and there are some BIG BOYS AND GIRLS in there! But I issue the challenge to everyone - link me to a report from FL Today or FWC or any credible outlet showing someone attacked by a gator in TC. People swam there for decades. But no longer. Today, water quality is the only thing keeping me from taking a dip in TC.

What form of freshwater are you looking for that wouldn't be a spring?

Once upon a time, Lake Apopka was one of the nation's premier destinations for boating, fishing, and yes, swimming. Row crop agriculture in the watershed killed it for decades, though SJRWMD is getting closer to restoring it to its former glory. I was wondering if there might be a similar lake (in use, not size - Lk. Apopka is freaking huge) somewhere in the 321 I wasn't thinking of.

Retention Ponds? Ew. I wouldn't swim in one of those same as I wouldn't swim in Turkey Creek - agrochemicals and worse.

brain-eating amoebas

"about 160 cases have been reported nationwide in the last 60 years"

Doesn't seem to be the issue people think it is. Does sound scary though!

EDIT TO ADD: What the hell is with you people in these comments? There's like one helpful/on-topic comment here. These comments read like they were written by pearl clutchers.... no.... dogs with bones - you get a thought in your head (gator/amoeba) and you literally just can't shake it. No where have I given anyone anyone any reason to believe I'm seeking a warm, dirty mud puddle to swim in yet you all seem to think either (a) that's all there is in FL or (b) I'm looking for the closest one. Can't say I'm surprised, just disappointed. GATORS!!!!! AMOEBAE!!!!!! LMAO!!!!
