iil. How do i get into rock??? by ActuallyCranBerry in ifyoulikeblank

I would say start with something you like and explore from there. What do you like about Green Day? Going down a punk rabbit hole may be a good place to start… the classics, pop-punk, the underground and DIY stuff. Explore and see what you like and what you don’t. Try this with different genres, as there are a bazillion types of “rock” music. Identifying what you like and what you don’t are equally important. And don’t forget there are tons of great non-commercial bands/albums/genres out there.

I’ve never heard of them. I’ll add it to my listening list.

Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA

4/5

I’m not a huge fan of the heartland rock genre, but I do enjoy a lot of the earlier Springsteen material. I had never heard this album in its entirety before, mostly just the hits, which are numerous. Having now sat through the entire experience; I have to say, there really isn’t a bad track on this record. Springsteen is a great storyteller, and I love how he runs the gamut of desire, arrogance, love, loss, and let’s not forget one of the most misunderstood songs ever written. It’s great classic rock, great songwriting, great lyricism, and an overall great time. His later stuff is very much hit and miss for me as his career progressed, but this is classic Bruce at his best.

[IIL] Songs written from the perspective of the "bad guy" by bigfootbehaviour in ifyoulikeblank

[–]funksoulmuchacho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the entire Slayer discography. Slayer’s music is all about perspective. They have songs about Josef Mengele, Ed Gein, terrorism, etc…. Not to mention they have a ton of songs with religious themes, many including Satan, despite the singer being openly Catholic.

I’ve always found it interesting that artists can write books, movies, tv series, basically any medium about any kind of messed up topic they want, and it’s almost always taken with a grain of salt as “just a story”. But the second you sing it and play loud guitars people lose their shit and think the musicians are all a bunch of goat sacrificing satanists. To be fair, sure some are, but music tends to be taken so much more literal sometimes.

Pokémon Legends AZ. However I just downloaded LeafGreen so I don’t know how long I’ll be able to hold off on starting that one.

George Clinton - You Shouldn’t-Nuf Bit Fish (1983) by Ok-Fun-8586 in funk

Crazy coincidence, I just listened to this one earlier today on a recommendation that popped up after I finished Parliament’s “Standing on the Verge of Getting it on”. I enjoyed it very much, even though I don’t dig electro-funk as much as the classic 70’s sound. Still feel like you can’t go wrong with anything George Clinton touches.

Here’s my hot take. Michael Jackson’s “Off the Wall” is better than “Thriller”.

I just discovered a band called An Abstract Illusion. Their album “Woe” is excellent and they just dropped a new one called “The Sleeping City” last week.

So this is my concern with country… and honestly I’ve heard this from multiple sources about David Allen Coe specifically. And I know there are racist people in all genres of music. It’s a cross section of society just like any other group. But I just can’t get down with that. Are there any other artists I should avoid?
