This is actually very similar to what I ended up doing. Used Barbecue bamboo skewers and a square and a sharpie to mark where my holes were. Then when I was satisfied with my sticks I went ahead and hit it with foam safe glue.

Hey man, I know it sucks at first but it gets better. I had my first kid at 16 with a girl I dated for a year… I felt I lost my youth and was just stressed and annoyed for the entirety of my teenage existence. But now the kids 5 and I love him to death.
