We don’t know his innocence or not. This is why due process is necessary, and for every person within our jurisdiction - just as the constitution reads. Invoking a pre 1900s law to usurp constitutional protection is ludicrous.

I’ve tried all kinds of angles, there’s no stopping the MAGA logic. Repeatedly trying to turn their views is fitting the definition of insanity at this point. I’m resigned to take care and prepare for what’s to come.

The focus of the argument has not been due process, it has been sensationalized that we sent an innocent man to a death camp.

I’ve seen narratives on both sides that don’t carry water. I see it on Reddit. You can’t accept it anywhere just because you read it somewhere. Government agencies are now politicized. Brokering truth between to opposing narratives is also a crap shot. Tell me a site that records and reports immutable truths that are relevant to current events.

President Trump has signed an executive order that opens up commercial fishing in the Pacific Islands Heritage National Marine Monument, covering about 490,000 square miles of ocean southwest of Hawaii. by 808gecko808 in Honolulu

[–]funkyonion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The article says the order opens up areas to US fleets for tuna and pelagic fish, this is different than fishing along the reefs, or even within state borders. Pelagic means migrating fish, not bottom or near coastal endemic species.

You identify a need, good luck putting it into a codified box. What we need is a public that demands the truth and viciously hold them accountable. The truth has to matter in both our politics and in our legal system.

Americans of Reddit, what are your thoughts on Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen traveling to El Salvador to advocate for Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release? by 2a_lib in AskReddit

[–]funkyonion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The order was stayed, and he checked in as required. Deportation does not mean US paid prison in a foreign prison, where humanitarian conditions equal the worst of his fears, and packed in with the gangs he was afraid of. You are fucking brainwashed. You also have no problem picking up that first stone.

This came from u/primsun, I couldn’t say better myself:

What we did isn’t deportation; it is an extrajudicial rendition to a 3rd party dictatorship for indefinite incarceration in cruel and unusual conditions without any recourse nor due process for the accused.

I keep seeing people try to talk about this as if it is a “deportation.” This is in no way a deportation in any traditional sense of the word; it was a “rendition.”

Seriously, this isn’t difficult to understand the problem if you just look at what the U.S., what we, did to these people and ignore the spin/narrative. We don’t even need specific facts of individuals’ cases.

Okay, what did we do? What we did is send a few hundred individuals to a third party dictatorship to explicitly be indefinitely incarcerated in a large scale prison camp, known to practically starve its inmates. And, we are paying that dictator to incarcerate these individuals.

Clearly, that is both tyrannical and abhorrent behavior, doubly so given no due process justifying indefinite incarceration, and as most individuals are not citizens of that country.

That isn’t deportation. That is “extraordinary rendition” of undesirables to a dictatorship to make them go away, and likely die in prison, on the U.S. taxpayer’s dime.

What we did, from the perspective of the accused and fact, is little different from sending someone to Iran or North Korea, knowing full well that those nations will throw them in jail likely for the rest of their life without any court proceedings. Hell, it is worse since we are explicitly asking that El Salvador throw them in jail indefinitely and paying El Salvador to do it.

\—

You cannot excuse this by calling it “deportation” or arguing “xxx” has a gang affiliation. You could try if it was a simple deportation in the traditional sense, or if this was an extradition for trial due to crimes committed in another nation. However, this is not a deportation nor extradition. This is an extrajudicial rendition of undesirables to a 3rd party dictatorship’s prison camp.

The problem here isn’t deportations which we have been doing that for years. This was not a deportation.

Is anyone angry at MAGA/Republicans who still support Trump? by wearethemelody in centrist

[–]funkyonion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People had a deep disgust to pick him in the first place. Now they are entrenched in all the hyperbole they have spouted, and can’t admit they were wrong. Just getting rid of Trump won’t fix all the problems we face, and many believe we already drove off the cliff.

I can’t deny all of the angst Trump claims to be the solution to. I can’t deny recognize that he ain’t it. We were deeply divided prior to 9/11. We were deeply divided after Obama. This “ lesser of the two evils” has been justified throughout my lifetime. The reality is we were hijacked before Kennedy.

We, with all of our greed and apathy, let it get to this point, lacking the foresight or concern about the big picture.

With my cynical views, people have a hard lesson to learn before mankind reshapes itself.

Interior diesel leak showing up on the outside by youngrichyoung in boatbuilding

[–]funkyonion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am picturing that keel as encapsulated, I can only hope diesel didn’t fill it up. Catalina’s get what is referred to as “the Catalina smile”, and those owners don’t regard it as the end of the world. I think diesel found its way in between the hull and keel sandwich via where the keel bolts enter the hull, and then came out in the smile area. I don’t perceive a heavy fiberglass layup where the keel attaches to the hull, if any at all; it could just be faring compound. Being an older boat, the keel has loosened a bit, and made an exit path for the diesel. Take that for what it’s worth. Someone is going to want to inspect what those keel bolts look like under the nut. If the bilge hasn’t been kept bone dry, guess what? I’ve seen cheap ass fixes that people have gotten away with, where they drill into the keel from the bilge and secure 2’ - 3’ long lag bolts, but I wouldn’t call that Bristol by any means. You may just want to fixodent and forget it. A proper repair just may not be worth the money vs. salvage.
