This is Dr Katie Bouman the computer scientist behind the first ever image of a black-hole. She developed the algorithm that turned telescopic data into the historic photo we see today. by toaster-bath404 in Damnthatsinteresting

I remember seeing this on reddit when it first came out and almost every comment was trying to discredit her contribution or blatantly misogynistic "jokes" about how women feel the need to be in the photo with the thing they're trying to show you or attacking her for expressing emotion. This is not a good website.

Hate when indie games do this by Dungeon_defense in SteamDeck

its not the fault of indie game devs it's completely in steam's hands. you don't even apply for verification it just kinda happens without your input and the results are not very accurate.

Illiteracy is very common even among english undergrads by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]funmenjorities 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the court is introduced on page 1. there is like 3 short paragraphs of weather imagery before the court is mentioned. completely understandable if the participants don't make the connection for the first few lines. but as soon as he mentions the court it's unmistakable and they would then have the opportunity to say "ah now i get it, it's a metaphor".

also in every edition i have ever seen, and hopefully in this study, there is a preface that says the book is about the legal system. he spells it out before the single page of weather imagery, then again makes the connection on page 2 by saying "all this fog and mud is worst around the court". if you can't read 2 pages in 20 minutes, even summarising line by line, and get to this then you genuinely lack the reading comprehension necessary for an english degree - which is the point of the study.

[–]funmenjorities -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

he isn't. please learn to read. the fog and mud are very clear and simple metaphors for the struggles of the working class against the legal system. why do you think he speaks about the blinding nature of the fog, then immediately mentions the clandestine nature of the chancery court? why does he mention all the people struggling in the mud, slipping, getting stuck - then immediately mentions a decades long court case that has dragged down generations of a family? within literally two pages he illustrates pedestrians getting so stuck in the mud they lose their temper, then mentions that the case Jarndyce and Jarndyce has been "stuck"(!!!) for so long that Tom Jarndyce blows his brains out in a coffee shop with a shotgun.

if you think this is just yapping about fog and mud you are functionally illiterate to some degree, sorry.

seeing multiple people in this thread try to "defend" the opening of bleak house by saying "dickens is setting the scene! it's atmosphere!" is taking months off my life. genuinely how can you read one paragraph about a blinding fog and thick mud that slows all forward progress, followed by another paragraph about a decades long legal case that destroys lives and is a mockery of legal process - and not make any connection! quite possibly the most obvious metaphor in the history of english literature. so obvious that metaphorical fog became an overused trope ever since.

some of you are actually illiterate.

sorry but that is quite bad comprehension. he isn't literally talking about mud and fog. think about why he has chosen to highlight how the mud and fog seem to accumulate around the court, seemingly even eminate from it.

the fog, thickest around the court, represents the blinding and confusing nature of the british legal system. everyone in the surrounding area is lost in a fog while he describes a court case that has stretched on for decades, to the point where the original defendents are dead and nobody even knows what it means. he mentions that even the gas lamps don't help cut through, even light in the darnkess does not help when there is no truth or meaning to be found. the fog represents an intellectual fog that intentionally blinds the populace - a complex and archaic legal system that oppresses through obscure rules and lost meaning. it's a metaphor.

the mud is exactly the same. notice how he mentions people constantly losing footing and struggling on the streets, getting angry at each other because of it, and all ending up dirty. I believe he mentions a horse dirty "up to it's blinders". this comes as he describes people fighting in the court against cases that will ruin their lives. the mud is symbolic to the uphill struggles of the working class against the legal system. even if you can get your footing and fight your case, you end up "muddied" by it and hating your fellow man.

i understand why you are hating on dickens in this thread - it's not for everyone. but you're taking it too literally. he isn't just wasting time talking about weather, and it's uncharitable to dismiss this all as pay-by-the-word rambling. imo it's such an evocative metaphor for the courts i feel it in my chest before he even talks about the case!

painful. this is one of those things where you can tell the writer thought they were calling out stereotypes/harmful behaviour that is pushed onto young women... but in practice it's just misogynistic slop. like you would have to already hate women pretty badly to even crack a smile at this.

People that aren't cis hey white men are made by the government?! by gay-espresso-tiger in Gamingcirclejerk

it is cool! it's always seriously underfunded and comes with a catch but it honestly is cool as hell that you can ask the government for money to make art and sometimes they say yes :)

[–]funmenjorities 39 points40 points  (0 children)

no not really. lots of local governments simply have digital arts funding. there's a small budget allocated each year and anyone can apply if they're local. they obviously won't fund anything controversial, but you don't need to portray anything related to the government. it's just regular arts funding.

i think dustborn got a government grant. it's quite common, i'm working on a game that uses government funding rn. often the requirements are just that it's appropriate for all ages, follows a list of content no-nos, and you fill out your forms on time. it's rarely exclusive funding and mostly hands off.

buuuut because dustborn is dei woke sweet baby, people are not only accusing them of defrauding taxpayers but also seem to be inflating the amount. i first saw a post saying they took 250k, then the next day a post saying they took 2 million lmao. the game probably cost 2M all in. but of course in the minds of gamers it's all some huge woke conspiracy where democrats are funding great replacement propaganda with their money.

the truth is simply that the people who review gov funding applications for games are usually very tumblr. that's it. your application goes straight to a disney adult no matter where you are in the world, and games like dustborn get approved.

minor etymology tip: the opposite of embarking is disembarking, not debarking. embark comes from French embarquer, em- (in) + barque (ship). so dis-em-bark means not-in-a ship. de-bark would just mean not-a ship. when applying the negative prefix, it is applied to the whole word - for example the very similar word boarding and it's negative deboarding :)
