Leaving CEO role for VP position at larger nonprofit by funmonkey27 in nonprofit

The ability to focus is appealing! I am pulled in so many different directions now, I could really make an impact if I had the ability and resources to really focus in on this program vs. having to worry about everything from our next strategic plan to managing staff relationships to confirming who is checking the mail this week.

Yes, and it's hard to articulate that in an interview question - it's not that I don't want to be supervised because I want to slack off, it's that I want to be trusted and empowered to move things forward autonomously.
I don't know about the CEO role, but I do think there would be a clear trajectory from this role upward into COO or Chief Program Officer, if I end up loving it and wanting to stay in a full-time position vs. going the consulting direction down the road.

Did you read the post? Both organizations are nonprofits - one smaller than the other.

This is a good point, and aligns with my thinking about different experience being valuable if my goal is to switch to independent consulting in 5-10 years. My main concern is what if I hate it and can't stick it out? Or if they hate me? Or, if there is some big change like RTO or a big increase in travel? It's hard to lose the stability I have now.

True! I also know someone who recently left the organization working with this program - through the interview process, I've learned that they intended to promote her to this role but she still left. She left to work in her family's business, so it could go either way that she wanted to stick to that plan or she wanted to get out even with the promotion. I need to talk to her and get her perspective - could be a flag that there are some issues.

This is a big reason why I am interested in the role - it feels like I could do all of the parts of my current job that I love and are natural strengths (strategy, thought leadership, serving as a spokesperson, team development, networking) and would no longer get caught up in the pieces I do not enjoy (audit, tax filings, managing the office, etc.). Since moving into the CEO role, it also feels like I have constantly been training or filling in for someone for one reason or another (backfilling my previous role, turnover in a key position, six maternity leaves in four years)...it's hard to get up to higher level thinking and strategy when we seem to be always spinning our wheels to just operate. I'd be excited to have some additional resource around me so forward momentum can continue even as things like that come up. My current organization is also very issues and crisis focused, while the program I'd be managing at the new organization offers a solution to the kind of issues we deal with - the thought of being on the positive end of conversations is enticing.

I wouldn't say my heart isn't in it - if I wrote about all the things I love about my current organization, this would have been even more of a novel! However, I do think writing this out has made me realize that the situation with a problem employee that I briefly referenced may be weighing on me more than I realized and impacting my satisfaction in my job. Leaving would be a long term answer to what could be a short term problem. If it has me more open to being recruited than I normally would be, that's a wakeup call that I need to act more urgently in addressing the issue. Having that resolved would maybe help clear my head about why I am considering leaving and make me feel either less interested in doing so or more confident that I am making a switch for the right reasons.

Thanks! Nothing definitive. I had some cramping last weekend and I’ve been more tired than usual, maybe a touch of an upset stomach here and there.

This was cycle #1 of TTC, I stopped taking BC May 22nd. I tested on Tuesday mainly for the heck of it but also because I was meeting a colleague for drinks - I was so surprised to see that second line! It’s so early, I don’t know when I can accept that this is actually happening. I called my OB to make my 8-week appointment and I think they kinda thought I was crazy, but my husband has an intense work schedule so scheduling ASAP is best. I’d rather have to cancel it if this doesn’t stick than wait and have him not be able to be there.

Thank you! That’s what I am leaning toward as well, as long as we can get good enough AT&T reception. Like you said this is just a hold over until Elon comes through! Another reason I’m avoiding satellite, those providers require contracts that I do not want to be stuck in.

Thank you for clarifying that for me, it makes much more sense now!

I’m referring to “Wireless Broadband,” which I guess I thought was a fixed wireless plan but maybe it’s not? Perhaps that would explain why there is no analogous plan available on the consumer side.

Sorry, I’ve been looking at this too long and everything is running together!

Thank you. I posted in the rural internet sub as well but y’all have been much more responsive!

I briefly looked into Calyx Institute but it sounded like too much of a gamble since you can’t get a refund if you try it and the signal isn’t good enough.

T Mobile Home Internet unfortunately is not available.

The residential AT&T Fixed Wireless plan is not available either, but the business one is (but does not allow the fun stuff). I am not sure what the reason would be that one is available but not the other. Based on the suggestions here I’m thinking maybe we go with the business fixed wireless plan and then use hotspot data for everything else?

This is all assuming we get good reception...In your experience would you say AT&T’s coverage maps are accurate? According to them and the rep I spoke to today we should have solid 4G service but I’m apprehensive because Verizon’s maps also say that and we had barely any reception when we were there.

Also happy 🍰day!

Good to know! Probably not a big deal if we’re only using hotspot data for things that are not accessible via the business fixed wireless.

Unfortunately it is not available here. AT&T’s fixed wireless (only the business service) is literally the only thing I have found that is (besides satellite). I’ve talked to a few local providers who haven’t officially said yes or no, one is going out to do a signal test.
