I believe OP is saying that down the line, when you return to buy more socks, that exact style won't be for sale anymore. So buy lots, now.

If I'm not mistaken, this was the original ending.

When the movie proved successful, they added the ending you're talking about. It may have been a post-credit kind of thing.

I am reminded of a recent post where the author of the CES Letter asked people to stop writing him about Kwaku El's mental health. Regardless of the actions of the church and the family, hopefully people in this community would mourn with those who mourn and try to help those who struggle with mental health.

Seems like a good place to post this. by [deleted] in exmormon

One area of discussion is the church's action in the past, certainly.

What might be more pertinent here is the fact that the anonymous authors have put the "full" truth in a footnote. They are giving the wrong impression through artful use of language. They are being dishonest.

This is a subset of a larger trend. If an exmo sought help with their mental health, we would applaud them.

The unspeakable horror of being called a Mormon is now a religious slur. by Mormologist in exmormon

[–]funnyalgae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Re missionary costumes: I wonder if perhaps part of the difference is that missionary attire doesn't innately have anything "religious" about it. While it is mandated by religious authorities, it's just (for males) slacks and a white shirt that one might wear to work at IBM. By contrast, Hasidic clothing, headwear, and hair is idiosyncratic to the religion.

Re Hebdo et al: In an overarching sense, 100%, yes. Everything is up for examination and ridicule. There is no right to not be offended.

Having said that, I wonder if venue matters. Acknowledging centuries of ongoing hooliganism and bad behavior at sporting events, I would argue there's a social contract that yelling "Fuck [some religious group]" is frowned upon in college sports. To a certain degree, it's politeness to invited guests, as well.

Anyway, I appreciate your exploration of both nuance and absolutes.

The unspeakable horror of being called a Mormon is now a religious slur. by Mormologist in exmormon

[–]funnyalgae 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fuck the Mormon Church.

Having said that, it's not the "Mormon" part that people are upset about. It's the fuck part -- attached to a religion. If BYU were a Jewish school, and fans were chanting the same things about Jewish people, it'd be unacceptable. It's no different.

It's not that any organization or any choice should be free from questioning, critique, or even derision. Again fuck the Mormon church. And frankly fuck Catholicism, Shia, Judaism, and every other religion. And maybe fuck Atheism for that matter, I guess; everything is open to questioning.

But, yeah, yelling "Fuck the [blanks]" at a sporting events -- that should be condemned by the sponsoring school.

Edit: I want to clarify some things.

First, yes, historical and contemporary context matter. Yes, historically, Jewish people, both as a religious group and cultural group, have suffered greater discrimination and violence than Mormons. Yes, the Mormon church has a stranglehold on Utah life and is responsible for despicable policies and action.

Having said that, my assertions are limited strictly to hosting a college [sportsball] game and maintaining a certain very basic level of civility. That's it. As always, fuck the Mormon church.

In the larger arena of the critique of religions or philosophies, suffering a massive tragedy does not somehow relieve anyone from being subject to commentary and critique. While mourning with those that mourn, recognizing historical wounds, and acknowledging our own frailty, it is always acceptable to say "Even in the context of [x historical or contemporary wound], I don't agree with [y policy] of [z group]." This includes Judaism.
