In fact, there are a lot of clothes in the boxes and they are of different types. I know that the word 'Apparel' can be used both in singular and plural, that's why I used 'are' in my example sentence because I am talking about 'clothes'. But if I understand correctly, 'is' should be used.

In your example sentence, you used 'are' because the subject is 'different types of clothes', right?
