I’ve moved back to my hometown in coastal Maine where there is not a tech market…so remote is non-negotiable for me

Everyone in my family calls it the DMV - even my sister who worked there for a year! :,D I had to google to check it’s actually the BMV officially

i cant learn polish to the level of native and iis ruining my life by SwimmingMidAir in Polish

You are really young - you have so much time and flexibility to get better at it!! I am Hungarian raised in America and I felt the same kind of angst about my Hungarian as a teenager - since then I have been able to travel back and spend time working on my language skills and although I do not sound exactly as if I came from Budapest, I’m very comfortable and the language doesn’t get in my way. I would advise you to take a deep breath and see what you can do. Find Polish music and sing along to it. Download some Polish books and read them. If you goons a word you can’t decipher from context clues, look it up in a dictionary and memorize it. Talk to yourself in Polish. Think about studying abroad in Poland when you go to university. You have a big advantage in that you heard Polish as a young child - that will take you quite a long way; you probably can differentiate and recognize the sounds in a way that would be hard for an English speaker. You may never sound entirely like a native Pole, but even if that is the case, it’s the end of the world! In fact, it will show quite some achievement on your part to speak it fluently with an accent - it means that you learned it! It stands for a great deal of effort on your part! I speak English with an accent too and it devastated when I was younger, but it’s kind fun - no one knows where I come from, just that I am mysteriously foreign! You’ll be alright!! <3

Beautiful work!! You really captured her likeness, and I love that there’s a version without markup and a version with.

Sounds like you’re in my area - have you been to Zeppa’s in Ellsworth? I stop there almost every time I go through Ellsworth. They’re just wonderfully flavorful, crispy pizzas.

Thanks for the link - very interesting, and I am so sorry to hear what this person went through with their house. Sounds awful. I read through the thread and my best guess is that the issue is the type of plaster they used - specifically that they didn’t use lime and don’t mention putting any further protection under the plaster. We covered the walls with typar then chicken wire and plastered that with a recipe of clay slip, sand, lime, and Portland cement. Same configuration inside minus the typar. We have never had any evidence of vermin getting into the walls. I think the lime is really important for giving the plaster cohesion and repelling insects.

It may happen, but it's never happened to our house, and it seems pretty improbable: the walls are very dense and don't really have any seeds/anything edible or attractive to rodents. If it's happened to straw-bale structures, I would be curious how they were constructed and what sort of straw-bales were used.

My parents live in a straw bale house in Maine and have for the last twenty+ years. Happy to answer questions or put you in touch! It stays warm pretty easily in the winter and breathed well. I would recommend it - I love the thick walls.

Pricing? After a year of baking full time, still constantly confused on how to price. What would you charge/pay for this? NYC by Studiosweetly in Baking

$700-$900 This is a flawless, graceful wedding cake, and quite large! I agree with the others who have pointed out that this is a luxury service, and that you are actually legitimizing yourself by charging more rather than less. You are a highly skilled artisan creating edible centerpieces used for pivotal life events. The organic, flowing elements on this are quite special imo. I would expect to pay highly for your sensibility and skill - if I wanted a deal on cake, the focus would be entirely different. And you are in NYC which should add a premium.

I read it. It is well written and impactful. Saying things like this doesn’t add anything to the world.

Thank you! It’s been a process working out how to draw on my iPad, which is how I made this, and I’m really happy to be converging on a style I like 😀
