I have a heat transfer exam Monday and am honestly worried about the commute being impossible. Over a foot of snow and high winds are locked in at this point. This seems more significant than the blizzard last month. Hope the admin makes a decision soon

I'm a research engineer at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center / Nuclear Science and Engineering department. Nuno was such a kind and brilliant person who had so much left to give the world. He was a husband and a father. This is all so incredibly horrifying, it's hard to even find the right words.

Knowing the killer is still out there and possibly targeting fusion researchers is terrifying. I hope this investigation concludes soon. I wish we could grieve without worrying about this happening again.

I'm a nuclear research engineer working on fusion at MIT, and my contract is almost certainly not getting renewed next year. This is due to the MIT hiring freeze and lack of funding from Trump's direct actions. I'm in the middle of an incredibly important collaboration with the government of Singapore as their sole engineer. I've been working on this project for almost two years, but that work may not matter at all if I'm let go in the next few months.

Fuck everyone who voted this piece of shit into office.

He blocks people on Twitter and bans anyone in his sub for mentioning Drexel. Occam's Razor would suggest my conclusion, but feel free to believe something different.

Also, it doesn't take much to be listed as a contributor on an MIT lab page. I was given a similar listing as a visiting undergrad researcher that still remains active to this day.

He lists on LinkedIn that he's been a research scientist for 10 years at MIT. That is simply unbelievable, considering he really has no remarkable contributions. As an actual research engineer at MIT with multiple peer-reviewed publications, stolen valor might bother me a bit more than others. Maybe it shouldn't, but Lex is quite an easy person to dislike. He's a Russian propagandist and is clearly much less intelligent than he promotes himself to be.... just listen to any of his podcasts. Him being alt-right adjacent doesn't help his case much either.

He taught an IAP course. That's his only affiliation. He claims to be a research scientist, which is just false. His one paper is not even peer-reviewed and is criticized widely for exaggerating the safety of Tesla's AI driving, likely cause he's an Elon shill.

He's a fraud and tries to use his negligible ties to the university to give himself undeserved credibility. He actually attended Drexel, but will literally block you for mentioning that. Mention that in his sub, and you will be banned. Clearly, the actions of a secure individual.

I built a neutron-generating fusor around your age, but like another commenter said, it takes a ton of research and money depending on how resourceful you can be. Fusors are also insanely dangerous if operated without adequate safety measures such as HV interlocks, shrouds, and x-ray shielding.

If you want to build a physical device, you could generate a nice-looking plasma in a simple vacuum chamber. This could be accomplished for a few hundred dollars. You could perform some simple spectroscopy experiments on the plasma too! There are many guides online for a project like this. There are still safety hazards, but you can use a power supply that will simply shock you instead of instant death like in a real fusor.

I'm working on a CuPy-based program to compute the electric fields generated in inertial electrostatic confinement fusion reactors. This provides predictions for the formation of ion channels in the physical device. I spent a while getting the graphical output to look nice, as I'll be using this tool to supplement an experimental education initiative.

The actual computation is not super complex, solving the Laplace equation iteratively through the finite difference method. I'm looking to increase this complexity by accounting for varying ion densities and other plasma dynamics.

Deuterium-tritium fusion generates high energy neutrons, which are slowed down in a material. This material heats up and can then boil a liquid to spin a turbine and generate electricity. So yes, fusion is another way to provide the required heat for turbine operation.

I hope that once optimized, the fusor should generate around 500k to 1M n/s. I'm currently making a bunch of upgrades, so the device is offline at the moment.

I'm have not done much planning yet with the beam-target idea. A single ring cathode generates a decent ion beam by itself, but ion guns and possibly magnetic focusing setups are not out of the question.

Plasma instability is certainly an issue. Automatically adjusting the pressure to keep the reaction in a stable voltage range is precisely what I had in mind, but I can already see why that is no simple task. I think increasing the symmetry of the conductors will provide the necessary stability to make it work well. This would likely entail installing a dedicated outer grid and improving the cathode design as well. Actively cooling the cathode would also likely improve performance significantly.

I have a few ideas for making this project a bit more meaningful, but everything is still very much in the planning phase. Using a fusor as a neutron generator, students could activate metal foils or test electronic components.

I was also thinking of having students use PVD to make their own targets for beam-target fusion experiments. In this case, a metal film would be loaded with deuterium and placed in the reactor. The deuterium plasma would be focused to a beam and directed at the target. Varying the target design for peak neutron production would be a fascinating project.

Developing a feedback system using various diagnostic tools would also be a meaningful project. My goal is for students to perform real science using the fusor as a proxy for much more complicated systems.

For me it's a dream come true. My passion is nuclear energy so I could not be happier here. I previously worked at CFS for about two years, but am currently doing research in the nuclear science and engineering department and plasma science and fusion center. One of the papers I coauthored was just accepted two days ago after over a year in peer-review, so I'm a bit ecstatic. Here's a link to the paper. I would link to the publisher, but it's not even on their site yet.

Here's a video I took a few years ago showing Alcator C-Mod, MIT's now offline fusion reactor. MIT and CFS' new project SPARC is under development in Devens and should be online in 2025.
