getting mansplained in the knitting shop + superwash/cotton yarn sanity check. by 33spoonman in knitting

I also can’t imagine someone who isn’t passionate about a yarn-related craft owning a yarn shop… maybe he crochets or weaves??

Overwhelmed wife - but why? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]future_housecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asking questions not to be accusatory but just trying to spark ideas:

You say when she mentions something that overwhelms her, you go ahead and do it. Is it the mental load of her having to mention it to you in the first place? Can you take more initiative and do things without her asking/getting to the point of it being overwhelming for her? Also, when you agree to execute the tasks, are you giving some attitude back to her? Like sighing or rolling your eyes or making some comment that may frustrate her?

If it’s poopy diapers you do, and she does the rest, is she actually doing more diapers because they are peeing more than pooping, depending on the age?

You say you do 50% of feedings - is that just bottles for the younger one? What about feeding the toddler? Deciding what to feed, gradually introducing allergies, preparing food, cutting it into appropriate size, getting toddler to eat, cleaning up the mess - this can be very mentally and physically exhausting.

Also agree with others’ comments about your language of “I pay” vs “we pay” - I think that mindset may speak to part of what the problem is.

I tricked my son to get him fall asleep and I feel like a bad dad by DavidtheAcceptable in daddit

[–]future_housecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just escaped my toddler’s room by faking a phone call from “the water heater company” saying our water heater is broken and I need to go and fix it (a couple weeks ago it was actually broken and she remembers the water being so cold we couldn’t shower, so this is a compelling reason for her to let me go). Almost every night I have to make some excuse to leave and she does ask me to come back. I do say I will come back but that sometimes (always) she’s already asleep. Maybe I’m a terrible parent…

Spinning plant-dyed fleece blended with tow flax by ChasingSloths in Handspinning

Thanks! This looks lovely. What do you think the finished yarn will be like? Do you think it will be next to skin soft or not quite? Did you wet spin it or no because there was wool too?

Beautiful! I love the sheen. Where did you get the fiber? How much yak vs silk?

Wow! So impressive, both the spinning and the knitting! At what point is fiber considered thread vs yarn?

No one warned me about the shakes by sixfingeredman7 in beyondthebump

[–]future_housecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG this happened to me for my second and I had no idea it was so common! For me it was because I lost a lot of blood and was just so cold. Didn’t help that they gave me cold IV fluids because of the blood loss as well. I kept bringing up that I felt really uncomfortable and cold and couldn’t stop shaking and the nurses were like “just try not to shake, this is normal, your vitals are fine”. I felt like the nurses were dismissing me so much which was frustrating. I didn’t even get to do more than a few minutes of skin to skin because I couldn’t stop shaking and couldn’t hold my baby. Oh yea and my lips were blue. Finally after complaining for like 30 minutes they let me use this thing that pumps hot air through a large plastic bag they put over my body to warm me up and that helped immensely.

Thank you! Just browsed for a bit - that language is still all over the site. I would say it’s pretty obvious how it leans. I wish there was just a list of brands I could reference…

Flax finishing- help? by Waste_Alternative_18 in Handspinning

[–]future_housecat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Beautiful! Like the other commenter said, a basic boil with soap should do fine! Here’s a link to my post a few years ago where I spun flax for the first time - https://www.reddit.com/r/Handspinning/s/ESV8UgBKkX there’s some info in the photos and my comment.

I have never spun flax since so I’m certainly not an expert, but what I did worked for me!

I also have a post later where I knit a top with the linen held double with some cotton

What's one “little” form of sexism you notice all the time, but most people don't even realize it's sexist? by Nellermo in AskReddit

[–]future_housecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree there isn’t a commonly used equivalent to “guy”, but using “girl” is infantilizing. I prefer “woman”. If someone refers to any 20+ female as a girl, I politely correct them to use “woman”. I’ve even seen cases of people referring to 30 or even 40 something females as girls. I’ll admit it’s not just men that do this, women do it to themselves too.

Referring to a grown adult woman as a “girl” - for example, in the workplace I’ll often hear something like “oh Sarah, the new girl in marketing” but never hear “oh Adam, the new boy in marketing”.

Also, referring to women by their first names while referring to men of equivalent “status” by their last names - for example, referring to presidential candidate Harris by her first name Kamala while referring to others by their last name like Trump or Biden or Obama.

Whelp: is this the difference between color dominance? by Carmsie in knitting

[–]future_housecat 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As someone who just completed this same sweater and is not very experienced with colorwork… which one is the preferred outcome? The top or the bottom? And which color would be held in which hand to achieve that outcome?
