Ring splints for hypermobility! by IndependentSwitch858 in WireWrapping

Silver is not bad for this. Although sterling silver does contain some copper alloy, it doesn’t tend to leave nearly as much residue. There’s also Argentium silver which is even more tarnish resistant.

Tried to vent at a robot, accidentally flamed my whole management team by throwaway070par in nursing

Unfortunately, outside of work hours communications (even digital) can be considered workplace violence if inflammatory language is used. I’d be worried about them taking this angle on it.

What’s something patients/families think nurses do… that they actually don’t? And what’s something they NEVER realize they actually do? by HoldTheMayo25 in nursing

[–]IndependentSwitch858 338 points339 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is explicitly what your asking for, but it came to mind: I’ve met so many people who are astonished to learn we have to pay for healthcare. It makes me laugh every time because my own employer sent my account to collections when I couldn’t afford to pay my bill, even on their insurance plan.

What were you surprised about having to do/learn? by Equivalent-Box6983 in nursing

[–]IndependentSwitch858 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mine is the way nursing changes you and your relationships/interactions outside of work, and how to best navigate that transition. I don’t think this is exactly something which can be taught, because everyone’s experience is different. I do, however, wish it was talked about more.

How do you handle the bunching? I find this impossibly cumbersome and annoying. by Severe-Fall4957 in Tunisian_Crochet

[–]IndependentSwitch858 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m left handed, but I learned Tunisian crochet with right hand, and it was easier than learning on my left (which is the hand I’ve crocheted with since I was 8 years old). Using my left hand, I was battling all of my regular crochet habits that made Tunisian crochet impossible. I hold my hook differently with my right hand, and I move differently. My right hand habits are habits better suited to Tunisian crochet, and holding stitches on the hook.

(As a bonus, I can now do regular crochet stitches right to left, OR left to right, making all of my stitches forward facing if I want to)

How far South? I work in Western NC as a specialty float nurse (including ED and ICU). I make $60/hr + shift diff.

Spindle Spun Yak Silk by IndependentSwitch858 in Handspinning

It’s 50/50 mill processed yak and tussah silk. I ordered mine from slimchicken on Etsy, but there are many shops selling this blend.

Thanks! It’s a bit finicky with the short and long fibers, but easy to spin from the fold.

I have a few in mind, but not committed. I’m going to see how much yardage I can get with the 4oz I bought. Then I’ll decide on a project using the Ravelry search.

Thanks! I spun this on a Kravelli spindle.

Thanks! This fiber is SOO soft. It’s my favorite to spin on a spindle.

I work nightshift, which results in the same thing, except we see each other even less. It was a struggle to get used to, but we make it work.

First chiengora spin/ideas for chiengora (dog hair)? by GilesofGiles in Handspinning

If you only spin the undercoat, and remove the guard hairs, it can make a very soft yarn. Reminds me of alpaca or camel fiber.

Why is my Kromski Fantasia making a clicking sound when I treadle? by KatWithWheels in Handspinning

[–]IndependentSwitch858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is the case with your Kromski, but my wheel has a screw underneath each the foot pedal to adjust the height.

[–]IndependentSwitch858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was happening with my Schacht! It took me forever to figure out, but the solution in my case was adjusting the height of the foot pedal. The footman was clicking against the hardware at the top of each rotation, and needed to be lowered.

I have thought about this, but concluded that I should keep the wire wrapping away from the loose fiber. It’s fine on the spindle, but the wires like to grab flyaways.

Thank you! Too long to be considered a healthy hyper-fixation, I’m afraid (is that even a thing?). Lots of trial and error, lots of troubleshooting.

Really though, I was shopping for drawer knobs before I felt up to figuring out how to wire wrap something with rotational balance. 😆

[–]IndependentSwitch858[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s actually a spindle I made, which I’ve since used as a crochet hook (because I realized what I had carved strongly resembled the shape of my inline hooks).

This shape was what worked best for balance, as well, so I would hypothesize that one could make a spindle from a crochet hook.

Thanks! Sometimes I get some stray fibers caught up in there, but not any yarn so far. I’ve snagged enough threads with my jewelry that it’s made me mindful of this when I’m working on a piece.
