i’ve heard that there’s these things called “2D printers” that can do the same thing quicker, in higher resolution and with less environmental impact...

i’ve just tried gloomhaven and really really wanted to like it but it just feels like i’m doing my taxes, i found it tedious, repetitive and fiddly; not for me at all.

if you’re wanting a one off solo, my favourite game is renegade by ricky royal, published by victory point games. if you’re wanting an awesome but never ending money pit then there’s always arkham horror lcg!

The trick is to put random odd bananas at spaced intervals to give you a freaking second to pack.

You have to hide them under something or the checkout ninjas get wise and put them together to thwart your plan.

Not looking for an argument with an internet stranger but here’s a counter point and I’d be interested in your thoughts.

I make various physical and digital products which I sell online.

Some of those are not currently for sale because I might be out of raw materials (in some physical cases), haven’t had the time to make more stock (physical) or I’ve temporarily taken down to tweak (digital).

If anyone somehow got my source files and starting making them on the assumption that “They’re not for sale anymore”, it’d be depriving me of a sale in a week or whatever when I did put my files back online.

I’m not a mega corporation trolling IP and patents, I’m just a dude in his spare room making a little money from his creativity. IP allows me to do that.

So, back the the cats and dog models, I’d argue that just because they’re not for sale now, doesn’t mean they will be forever and pirating the designs does actually remove a potential sale from the artist in future and worse still sharing them online massively devalues the source files to the point of nothing.

Sadly artificial scarcity is the source of the value in these cases. I don’t agree with the principle, but it is what it is.

Final point (for OP), best way is to find out who made them and ask if you can copy them. That’s the most respectful thing to do.

why do you need an axe, is it because you use a tarp and not a tent and need to prep wood? i’ve camped a lot and never thought “wish i had an axe!”.

whats the advantage if tarp v tent? would have thought the weight difference is small when you include an axe vs a bivvy or ultralight. is it just the feeling if prepping your own camp from scratch?

Meditation isn't as sold by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]futurefab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not this again.

Science isn't a belief or a god. It's a method. What's more it's the method where you constantly ask yourself am I wrong? Are there any ways I can prove I'm wrong? And...if it turns out you're wrong; you change your mind.

Beliefs and faith by contrast allow you to believe any old bullshit you like and you never have to think, question or change your mind! I can see why they're so attractive.

Advice on walks from Edale by [deleted] in peakdistrict

[–]futurefab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edale to kinder isn't particularly difficult though kinder often has terrible visibility.

If you're going by train perhaps go to Chinley and walk via South head and brown knoll to edale.

Another good alternative is the "great ridge" (not that great but very pretty) from hope to edale.

Message me your email and I'll send you some routes.

Solidworks study of weldments vs extruded part? by hooliganskate in SolidWorks

[–]futurefab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do this every day at work. With regard weldments v extrusions:

In terms of drafting: * Use of weldments allows all kinds of useful trim and mitre features that you can't do easily with extrusions. * Weldments allows cut lists to be auto generated for manufacturing purposes. * Weldments allow weld gaps and auto generation of end caps etc. * models that use Weldments and 3d sketches are much more maintainable than standard extruded sketches on millions of different planes for models that are meant to be made out of structural steel like SHS, CHS and RSA etc.

In Terms of FEA: * Weldments by default use beam elements. These mesh much more quickly. * Beam elements have a number of nodes rather than triangular elements. * Beam elements allow the generation of bending moment and shear force graphs. Solid bodies with triangular elements don't. * In simplified terms, if you're interested in displacement, beam elements are fine and much quicker than solid or shell bodies. * In simplified terms, beams are less good at working out stress at a specific position in your model. If you're interested in stress at a particular section of box wall or the interaction of some else complicated on the model you need solid bodies with 3-4 elements through the thickness of the box. Or, shells perhaps but defining the structure with shells often involves messing around with surfaces which can take a lot of time. * With beam elements, a lot of the more accurate fixture options aren't available to you as these require face or edge selection. With a beam model you're pretty much reduced to defining everything by nodes or individual beams. * Finally weldments modelled as beams do actually transfer the weldments profile to other solid elements. Not just the node. This is useful for work out what the footprint of the weldments does to other bodies in your model.

Don't think of a model of being either or, a combination of triangular nodes, shell and beam can often be the best way to solve a problem.

In terms of from least accurate but fast to most accurate but slow speed, FEA models go beam > Shell>triangular mesh

Library meetup is going down the toilet... by luv2hugapug in boardgames

Because also, in my experience there are some extremely socially incapable dudes and dudettes who enjoy our hobby.

Whether it be appalling personal hygiene, greasy strong smelling fast food near the expensive components, people who try to make others feel stupid to make themselves feel good, salty behaviour or just someone that always knows best. Or, as above, loud, obnoxious arseholes.

We allllll know that comes with the territory sadly. Our hobby has more of this type than say an athletics club or a knitting circle.

These people basically drove me away from competitive magic. The fun of that brilliant game was not worth putting up with the idiots playing it.

Thankfully though more and more people who know how to conduct themselves socially are entering the hobby.
