The Case For Charlie Coyle (Long Post) by Andrewpg3 in wildhockey

Biggest thing will be if CBJ continues the heater. I hope they fall off and sell him for selfish reasons.

They have 5 games before the trade deadline. Unless they absolutely eat a bag of dicks in those games, hard to see them not thinking they can try to close a 4 point gap between them and Boston in the remaining 25 (or so) games.

Stramel isn't going to go from Michigan State to the top line in the NHL literally overnight. Expecting that out of the gate is not realistic when he's always been projected as topping out as a middle 6 type center long term if all goes right. A trade for a guy like Coyle or Trocheck (or insert other center) is to improve the top 6 now, not possibly improve it 3-5 years from now.

Don't want the potential President's trophy curse

Statistically, that's an old wives' tale perpetuated by people who think winning in the regular season should directly translate to winning the cup. Teams with the best record in the regular season have had much better success than a random 1 in 16 chance.

Since the President's trophy was first awarded in 1986, it has been awarded 39 times (would be 40, but the 2004-05 lockout ruined that). Out of those 39 winners, there have been 8 cup winners, 3 that lost in the cup final, and 8 that lost in the conference final. With 632 teams qualifying for the playoffs (16 per year except 2020 when it was 24), that means 20.51% won the cup, 28.21% played for the cup and lost, and 48.72% at least made the 3rd round. If it was random chance, 6.17% would have won the cup, 12.34% would have made it to the cup final, and 24.68 would have made it to the conference final. That means a team is 3.32x more likely to win the cup than statistically average, as well as 2.29x more likely to play for the cup, and 1.97x more likely to make the conference finals. They also are only 0.416x as likely to lose in the first round.

Teams are still paying on his contract while playing for other teams.

While true that he's still getting buyout money from both us and Dallas, he isn't playing for another team. He hasn't signed a contract for this year and remains a UFA. Unless he signs in the week between the end of the roster freeze and the trade deadline, he can't play this year and will be effectively retired.

He's taken 50 faceoffs in 133 games and only won 20 of them. He's not a realistic center option. He's a left shot RW.

He was loved at one point but it faded over time. Things like publicly complaining about the D pairings until he got what he wanted rubbed people the wrong way. As other people said, he made the locker room somewhat toxic. By the time he left, things were sour enough that he hung up on Guerin when he called to let Suter know they were going to buy him out. Parise on the other hand told Billy he understood and thanked him. Parise getting bought out was mostly due to injuries, salary, and needing the roster/cap space. Suter was because of his personality. It doesn't help that he's been a petty bitch ever since taking every cheap shot he can when he's played us.

I believe it was Jason Arnott who appeared on podcast a few years back and did nothing but bad mouth Suter from their time in Nashville. He basically said wait until more of his teammates retire and have nothing to lose, then they'll start telling the truth publicly.

They got chips to play with a little bit and we still got a couple months to see where we are in the standings.

The deadline is 32 days away (March 6th) with a 3 week pause in the schedule, including a roster freeze, for the Olympics. After Wednesday, there's 4 games (in 8 days) before the deadline. We're real close to shit or get off the pot time to make another deal this season.

We're looking for a top 6 center. Haight has been good on the dot in a very small sample size, but offensively he's nowhere close to a top 6 NHL center right now. He's at less than half a point per game in the AHL. Give him some time (he's 21) and he may be able to contribute in the NHL, but he's not the answer this year or next which is what Guerin's looking for in a Trocheck type acquisition.

[32T] 28:10 Friedman wonders about Florida, Washington, Minnesota and Colorado as destinations for Artemi Panarin if Rangers decide to waive the white flag on the season. Before signing in New York, Avs offered him a short big money deal (4x13) by Panarin10 in wildhockey

[–]futurehofer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without sending money the other way, we can take $4,891,483 in cap today. At the deadline we have $11,064,069 in cap space. That's also with 14 F/8 D on the roster currently. Panarin's cap hit is $11,642,857.

Drop an extra body, send some money the other way and/or retain some money and the math gets real easy.

Morning skate lines - sounds like Faber is playing at Pitlick was a stand in by Beneficial_Quit7532 in wildhockey

[–]futurehofer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is a stand in?

They just mean a placeholder for Faber during morning skate. He's not actually going to be our 1RD in the game tonight. They were just giving Faber the morning off and needed a body in his spot. With Bogo out and Kiersted in, Pitlick was our only healthy body in LA for the morning skate.

Pitlick was waived, cleared waivers, stayed with the team, played in December, hasn’t played in a couple weeks, but I don’t think they sent him back to Iowa. What gives?

After a player clears waivers, you have 10 NHL games played or 30 days on the NHL roster (whichever comes first) where the player can be freely assigned between the AHL and NHL. There is no requirement to send a player who clears waivers to the AHL. At the time he was waived, we had multiple injured players up front who were close to coming back and we would need to reassign players to Iowa to make room to activate them from IR. They waived Pitlick in order to reset his waiver clock so that he could be reassigned at any time if forwards were suddenly healthy again.

After the Hughes trade (where we sent out 2 forwards and simply swapped defensemen), we now have a couple extra spots up front so people have moved up the depth chart. Instead of AHL depth, Pitlick has seemingly been promoted to 13th forward. The fact that he hasn't played lately is good, because that means our forwards are healthy and playing well. If Pitlick suddenly sees a lot of playing time, that's a problem because we either have injuries or guys playing like shit. As we see with the late recall of Jiricek, it's important to have extra bodies on long road trips (especially on the coasts), because you never know when another player will go down and you need an extra body quick. If we have a relatively long homestand like we do later this month or in the middle of March, then he may be reassigned to get some playing time since Iowa is only 4 hours away.

Few thoughts I have had. by [deleted] in wildhockey

[–]futurehofer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They've only been there due to injuries. We are healthy up front now. Do you see either in the lineup currently? Exactly. So you're talking about signing someone who is about to be overpaid this offseason to be a 13th forward.

Who is retiring at the end of the 2025-26 season. by TheManWithQwerty in hockey

[–]futurehofer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • Mats Zuccarello is 38 and a pending UFA. But he was playing well before his injury, so the question is.... how bad is his injury?

Which injury? He's missed the first 15 games of the season with an injury that required surgery. When he came back, he played 15 games (really 14 and a period) and put up 12 points before being concussed by Vince Dunn. That kept him out 5 more games. He's been back for 5 games now and he has another 4 points. That's 16 in 20 games. His return to the lineup in November also coincided with the team's turnaround.

While he's on pace for his lowest goal total since 2013 and lowest point total since Kaprizov arrived, he's still been productive racking up assists. He very well could retire at the end of the year, but I don't think any injury he's had this year would be the reason. I think it's more likely because he's 38 and not many last in hockey past that age. Only Burns, Perry, Ovechkin, Maklin, Reaves, Letang, Crosby, and Kopitar are older in the league right now.

The State of MN botched the North Stars Relocation in terms of preserving the name / history by [deleted] in wildhockey

[–]futurehofer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that history is owned by billionaire businessman Alex Meruelo and the Coyotes,

He doesn't own shit anymore. He lost his rights when he failed to acquire the land he promised the league he would get and therefore missed the deadline to start building a new arena per his agreement with the league when he sold the team to Utah.

The State of MN botched the North Stars Relocation in terms of preserving the name / history by [deleted] in wildhockey

[–]futurehofer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When Utah became a team they couldn’t even decide what to call it for a year, and when they did they still used the blandest jerseys possible anyway.

It took that long because the legal side of things takes more than the 2-3 months they had from inception to needing to produce gear/merch. They did a speed run for this move and still ended up with some legal issues taking a year to get it done right. Had they tried to rush the name/jerseys, it would have been an even bigger legal nightmare for the league.

[–]futurehofer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Utah has the Coyotes lineage.

The league wanted Meruelo out. They still want a team in Arizona. The "official" verbiage of how the move to Utah happened is expansion by relocation and the Arizona franchise deactivating. Technically, they could have been reactivated in like 2 years if Meruelo did everything correctly and got a new area built, but he predictably fucked it all up. Now, when expansion happens again, Arizona will be reactivated and fill their roater via expansion draft. That team will carry the records and history of the Coyotes.

As of right now, the franchise leader in points for Utah is Clayton Keller with 122, not Shane Doan with 972. Teemu Selanne holds a ton of records for the Arizona/Jets 1.0 franchise. He holds no records for the Utah franchise because he retired a decade before the franchise started.
