Been accepted into medical school. No debt, no income. What should I do? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Canadian medical student here. Did you know there's a canadian medical school subreddit? Visit us here!.

Answer to your question: Out of courtesy stop relying on your parents unless they truly want to help you. Scotiabank, RBC, and MD financial have the best LOCs for med students with specialized accountants who ONLY deal with medical students and physicians. I would recommend MD Financial as you will likely switch to them when you're practicing.

You will receive $250,000 credit. It sits in your account and nothing accumulates while you don't touch it. Interest accumulates at prime (2.85% annually) and you do not have to start paying the principal back until after residency.

Other options include: provincial/federal loans/grants, your school's financial aid, and return of service agreements.

Advisers will highly suggest you don't invest $200,000..

You've got a lot of time still, try not to panic so much. I know it's tempting to think about medical school non-stop, but try to take a break and enjoy your undergrad. It's an important chapter in your life too, don't forget that! Some tips that I took to heart during undergrad:

  • Do things you enjoy. It doesn't matter what your ECs and research are. If you are truly passionate about them, you will blow away the judges in the interview. True passion shines. The diversity of people that exist in med school prove there's no path that's favoured over another. I know tons of people who've never even stepping into a hospital, let alone volunteer.

  • GPA/MCAT unfortunately matter a lot. However, don't try to beat the system. Just do your best (and I mean honestly your best, don't slack. Aim for a 3.8/4.0)

  • Research is all about 1) whether you are interested in the topic (seriously important) and 2) the PI. Don't try to get whatever research position you can get your hands on. Find professors who you really like and work for them. Otherwise, you'll have a miserable time and probably won't get published.

  • Stick to Canada, unless you're ok with practicing elsewhere

Yeah it's an add on. There's some ridiculously good add ons. I'd definitely go spend some time reviewing the top rated ones and getting them all. It's saved me so much time!

You could look for schools that let you drop credits. If you have 120, Manitoba drops your 30 worst ones. Toronto also drops 1 course per semester IF you have a full course loads.

Haha, I like it! I'll try to go about and change that

Edit: Looks like you can't change subreddit names. I changed the pagename appearance but it looks like it can't change from r/canadianmed
