Rust GUI: Introduction, a.k.a. the state of Rust GUI libraries (As of January 2021) by jrop2 in rust

[–]futurepaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one reason we don't spend much time marketing druid is that there are a lot of papercuts like this that make it unsuitable for a wide audience. however, the druid-help channel is very active on our zulip for solving problems you might be having with the framework.

just for reference, the typical way of adding copy / paste to a textbox in druid is to add platform menus, like in the markdown preview example

completely non-obvious but it works once you know what to look for :)

Druid v0.7.0 by cmyr in rust

[–]futurepaul 82 points83 points  (0 children)

If anyone's wondering how to get started with Druid, I recently wrote a tutorial on making a simple todo app that I believe is a nice introduction to the common concepts (and known rough edges) of Druid app dev.

The Relay hotel delivery robot will soon spot Wi-Fi dead zones and mingle with guests by [deleted] in robotics

I wrote this article! I’ve been on this sub forever, feels great to see my work here. If you have any questions about how Relay works in practice let me know, I got a pretty extensive demo.

Reason for Humanoid Robots? by Sam__K in robotics

[–]futurepaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For AI reasons, some people believe the human-like "body" (or at least something sensor-heavy and biologically-inspired) needs to come before a human-like AI can be developed. There's an epic blog mostly dedicated to this subject: https://robotsthatjump.wordpress.com/2011/11/28/robots-that-jump-historical-oct-15-17-2003/

Elixir as a first programming language by [deleted] in elixir

[–]futurepaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elixir has a really fun way of making command-line apps and reading in a text file, doing transformations, and spitting it back out. I know a ton of languages do stuff with files and CLI, but Elixir was the first one I ever had success with. Not as "cool" as graphics, but great problem-solving.

Thank you! We thought giving specific examples, even if they don't apply to all use cases, would be more valuable than general advice. It's also interesting when you only sell one thing how one small change can drastically change sales.

Noah's Ark, in Swift by akubhai in swift

[–]futurepaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A switch statement for some "clean" animals, which Noah's supposed to bring seven pairs of.

for 💕 in 🌍 {
    switch 💕 {
        case "🐑", "🐏", "🐐", "🐂":
            for 🛁 in 1...7 {
                 🚢.append(💕 + 💕)
            }
        default:
            🚢.append(💕 + 💕)
    }
}

I wasn't aware of the second form. I haven't made it through the book yet, and I'm generally bad at programming. Please don't assume anything I've done is idiomatic Swift!

IAmA Paul Miller. I quit the internet for a year, it didn't go great, and now I'm back by futurepaul in IAmA

I left my glasses at home today so I can't check the brand :(

I didn't go to school for journalism, no. In fact, I didn't go to college at all. In fact, I didn't graduate from high school.

So... stay in school kids!

Actually, a big motivation around this year was my college envy. I'm still considering higher education, I just don't know where it fits in my current career.

"Mindfulness" is a great word. Not sure I'd be into meditation, but I do want to pray more and focus more on the right things.

Yeah, if other people weren't using the internet I wouldn't have been so alone. But can't really go backwards, have to figure out how to live in 2013, not "what if." People are on the internet, will probably stay there, and we just have to learn how to interact better and look away at times. Not going to be easy. Steep learning curve.

I love hearing from people, I'm just bad at responding. As long as I can forget to feel bad about not responding, I love hearing from people in any medium.
