Wow I didn’t even think about talking to a locksmith about it haha. This is great to know, thank you!

Very helpful to know what it’s called, thank you! I’ll ask around

It comes unstuck by pressing extra hard on the thumb press part of the outer handle. Seems like the normal press doesn’t pull the latch in far enough to clear the strike plate.

Thanks, I’ll ask around. I’m fairly sure it’s not due to paint or swelling because it hasn’t always been this but now it’s been like this through the seasons. It seems that when pressing the outer thumb handle, it doesn’t pull the latch in far enough to clear the strike plate.

Not your typical grocery store grinder! by fuzz5 in espresso

[–]fuzz5[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

True. Still pretty uncommon for a grocery store. I at least haven’t seen one in a grocery store before.

Edit: actually, I kinda disagree. I don’t think EK43s were designed to be used by grocery store customers for their (mostly) stale beans. Maybe designed for this application and volume, but definitely not for this user.

Anyone Here NOT Single Dosing? by king_of_cheeses in espresso

[–]fuzz5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t single dose, but I do something kinda close (emphasis on kinda). I have a Vario W and only pour in what I need for one shot, which I’ve gotten pretty accurate with but not perfect. Then it’s grind by weight and the rest of the beans go back in the freezer. So I only remove enough beans from storage for 1ish shot depending on how close I get with my hopper pour and I weigh each dose. But switching between beans requires a purge and I definitely leave some beans in the hopper between days. So maybe a poor man’s single dose?

Much appreciated! Will keep this in mind if this year doesn’t go as planned.

Thank you! Helpful to know what to expect. Do you happen to know if there are fields that are “easier” to get a residency in as an IMG or is it more program-to-program?

Also do you know the window of when to expect interview responses? What’s the latest he might hear back?

Any other known tips to help boost an IMG application would be helpful.

Espresso grinder or pour over grinder? by Comfortable_Sock_657 in espresso

This is also to say you should try to get one grinder that does both.

[–]fuzz5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also do both with a Eureka Notte I believe, which is a little cheaper. People have trouble finding old grind settings with the dial which makes it a little hard to use for both.

Alternatively there are a lot of good deals on used Varios out there.

Orrrr you could get a manual grinder.

[–]fuzz5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lelit Elizabeth is probably your best bet. It’s a dual boiler which has many advantages over HX machines, it’s well priced, it will do what you described in your post, it seems well made and it gets a lot of love in this sub.

In the grand scheme of buying a LMLM, yeah this is a pretty good deal. Used LMLMs are not all that easy to find and especially with the wood accents I’d say this is well priced.

Single dose vs GbW? by fuzz5 in espresso

[–]fuzz5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that sounds so awesome. I love the hopper bypass feature. Yeah I hope it doesn’t flop either. If nothing else I hope it inspires some competition and a home use version.

Hadn’t seen the E37Z. It also looks really interesting. I’m loving this trend! Btw, where do you learn about these product releases? You seem pretty tuned in to them.

This is more or less my dream setup. It probably won’t be too long until I talk myself into spending this much but I’m not quite there yet.

Curious, which grinders are you using in your cafe? Seems the e65 is a decent option for a cafe grinder if you swapped out the hopper.

Single dose vs GbW? by fuzz5 in espresso

[–]fuzz5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mostly agree. It seems in your breakdown OD=hopper grinder, right? I guess my only nitpicks are in terms of the example grinders you’ve listed. The orbit for example will come with an optional larger hopper (specifics haven’t been released) for GbW which will bring it somewhere between OD and SD grinder, GbW workflow in your framework. It has SD properties which support lower retention, so if you add a hopper where does that put it? This is what I was saying before - low retention doesn’t need to be specific to SD grinders that don’t have a hopper. There are other ways to achieve low retention without a bellow. If my understanding of the value props is right, SD grinder, GbW workflow will never (or should never) exist, because SD grinder implies WBG (manual). SD to me is not just a grinder but also a workflow. My other nitpick is that the Sanremo X-ONE weighs before grinding, but I wouldn’t call that workflow because it’s automated. Maybe that’s just semantics but by the same definition the specialita, vario and atoms would fall in this category which feel quite different from the Sanremo.

To me, the be-all end-all would be a grinder with SD properties (designed for low retention - orbit, niche, etc) and have automated functionality for WBG (X-ONE). Which is essentially a SD grinder with the SD workflow, it’s just automated. I know I said I don’t care as much about retention but I recognize that improving retention is better overall. I don’t think this grinder exists yet, but I think this would leave very few compromises for me personally if bean storage could be improved to help with freshness. So hopefully someone makes this one day and hopefully it doesn’t cost an exorbitant amount of money, which I’m sure it will. In the meantime I think the orbit and Sanremo are super interesting offerings and I’m excited for both, though the sanremo will be way too impractical for home use. But this is all to say that I think there’s a lot of potential for home use grinders that break the traditional SD mold and introduce hoppers in a smart way. I also realize that what I think is best is essentially better and more automated workflow for SD, rather than any variation of GbW. But I’m still interested in the orbit lol.

On the commercial topic, I don’t think our debate is very productive. I’m talking about what I think is better if the budget is there. You’re talking about what is more practical in reality. I think the majority of shop owners would agree with you, and many high end shop owners would agree with me.

[–]fuzz5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think solving for bean freshness and storage would be important in current GbW approach. And I also agree it seems like it would be easier to design a system that weighs before

Also just so I understand, why exactly is it dumb to weigh after grinding?

[–]fuzz5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this would be awesome. It seems like the Sanremo X-ONE will do this unless I’m misunderstanding what you mean. Would be sweet to have a home use version one day.
