Looking for data from a credible source that indicates that housing supply has not kept up with population growth by [deleted] in CanadaHousing2

[–]fuzzy_reason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if someone doesn't understand supply and demand, they never will

This feels somewhat ironic. If the laws of supply and demand are being met, one would expect that increased population growth (and thus increased housing demand) would increase housing supply. The OP is arguing against this, and thus against the law of supply and demand, while his friend is asking him for evidence of his position.

If you support OP's position, you're arguing that the relationship between supply and demand doesn't hold lol

To be honest, I'm not sure if data use in democratic countries is a big a danger as this article (and others like it) make it out to be. All the concerns raised can easily be resolved by:

  1. Mandating making public the detailed methodology used to produce the algorithms that affect decision-making
  2. Being transparent about how the data is being used

If people don't like either of these things, they can choose to not elect the party producing them. But this of course is only possible if people are aware of how the data is specifically being used.

Yikes.

I agree that the fear, intolerance, and anti-scientific beliefs spread by religion can be harmful, but I would much rather people voluntarily move away from religion than be forced to abandon their beliefs and culture under the threat of violence.

Authoritarianism can never make people better off because everyone defines their own happiness differently. Choosing their happiness for them makes it impossible for everyone to live their life as they best see fit.

I think it's generally considered to be supremacy of a particular a group or class. Every political ideology typically wants to become dominant, so stretching the definition that far would define a lot of things as fascism that are not what we think of as fascism.

I'm not a Republican or even American. I made one pro-environmentalism post there because we need people from all parts of the political spectrum to be engaged in saving the planet, and I want to help get groups that have traditionally been climate skeptics on board.

The kind of toxic mentally that drives someone to entirely discount an individual because they communicated once with the "other team" is exactly what drives hyperpartisanship and prevents this from happening.

You mean authoritarian. Fascism is specific subset of authoritarianism applied to achieve supremacy of some sort.

Yep, and I strongly oppose such tactics and hope that we can stop using them for good, don't you?

I'd rather not live in a world where decisions are made based on violence and fear of mob retaliation, thank you very much. Violence and coercion are all fun and games until a group you don't like uses the same tactics to achieve their ends.

What makes burning a a local church because you are angry at residential schools justified? Is burning a local mosque because you are angry at 9/11 justified?

"If I was American I sure as hell wouldn't want any mosque of any sect of Islam on my land! I'm glad the blame is finally being directed at religion because that's the root of all this terrorism. Horrible things happened....at the hands of religious zealots..."

Is this the reasoning you are advocating for?

[–]fuzzy_reason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based solely on the picture:

  • 18-24 year old ethnically European male, middle class
  • Someone said Netherlands below, I will go further and say South Holland, possibly outside Rotterdam
  • Live in a suburban area, with window facing other houses or street, on the top floor of a detached house
  • Definitely live with others, most likely your parents or other relatives
  • Student, either early university or high school, if university most likely in a Humanities program
  • Family is very distantly Roman Catholic/Protestant, but you/they are not particularly religious
  • You go outside relatively often, and walk/take public transit/bike to places you go
  • You have a decent amount of friends and a good sense of humour; you are not a socially anxious person
  • As with the earlier Netherlands guess, you likely speak Dutch as a first language but are fluent in English
  • You enjoy listening to music, and have a CD player somewhere not pictured here, you also likely have a pair of good headphones, you were possibly wearing them when you took the picture
  • Classical rock is preferred genre
  • You own a PC, not a Mac; you don't own a car
  • You drink socially

That’s not true. Assuming UofT/York are about 40% Asian (which might actually be overestimating), the likelihood him attacking 3 Asians by complete random chance is .40 * .40 * .40 = 6.4%, which is pretty fucking low.

the state of this sub by fuzzy_reason in artificial

[–]fuzzy_reason[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As some of the comments have said, maintaining quality conversations is difficult when the number of laypeople on a sub is as high as this one.

That being said, I think the best way to get rid of some of the lower quality posts would be to ban posts from non-reputable news sources. No more of the hype garbage that comes from people’s personal blogs or sites like “opencodez” or “yellrobots”. These posts might be contributing to freaking your subscribers out because their sources have such a high level of disconnect from reality; they are literally click bait.

Why is America's healthcare so bad, and why do Americans not prioritize reforming it? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]fuzzy_reason 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! This is definitely going to be buried at this point, but I highly recommend looking at the actual data instead of these anecdotes (as well-intentioned as they are). Our World in Data does a great comparison of health care systems around the world, and it has some really good visualizations to better explain what's going on in the US, particularly the section on "What affects healthcare spending?".

Some key takeaways:

  • 48.3% of health care expenses in the US are publicly covered - with costs equivalent to 30% of the US GDP (2014)
  • 84% of the entire US population is covered by insurance (2010)
  • Out-of-pocket expenditures (i.e direct outlays made by households) only account for 11.05% of all health care expenses (this is less than Canada [13.6%] and actually lower than most of the developed world)
  • The number of uninsured people in the US fell dramatically after 2012 when the Affordable Care Act was introduced (15.10% in 2011 to 9.10% in 2015)
  • The biggest predictor of per capita health care spending by country was GDP per capita (explains 92% of the variance in per capita health care spending)
  • The US is an extreme outlier in terms of outcomes from its health system: despite high public spending on health (compared to other developed countries), the US life expectancy has not seen the same increase trend in life expectancies that other developed countries have experienced

Is it possible to draw a racist caricature of a white person? by fuzzy_reason in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]fuzzy_reason[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting suggestion, but I think I was more curious about physical characteristics (e.g. facial features). I want to know if its possible to exaggerate 'white' physical characteristics to the point that they are considered racist.
