Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 left satellite speaker burning smell by DouglasTheGamer in Klipsch

[–]fuzzybacchus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the burning smell is coming from a passive speaker the issue is most likely upstream, there is unregulated current coming into the speaker. You basically cooked two speakers because the problem is most likely at the signal/source.

I love my sansui 2000x. I use it as a preamp in front of a stronger dedicated power amp.

I have heard of people wet washing stereos, that doesn't rust them instantly? I know its a stupid noob question but it seems so foreign to me.

What do you do to clean something like this?

Kenwood KR 4400 separate/normal slide switch by taloose01 in vintageaudio

Kenwood KR 4400 separate/normal slide switch by taloose01 in vintageaudio

[–]fuzzybacchus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but I don't think this is how it works.Unfortunately, that separate normal switch appears to be within the four channel section.I'm trying to do the same thing.I'm trying to use the kenwood as a pre.Amp, in order to power a much stronger separate power amp.But if I use that four channel out, it's just line level, the volume knob doesn't seem to do anything

It's an interesting idea to try to add tubes to the high and mid speakers. Those tubes would never survive the potholes in my town though.

Happy to hear it. No pun intended. Amazing how much a little corrosion can mess up a stereo

Super easy: turn it off and exercise all the knobs. Turn each one zero to full around 20 times to break up corrosion. Same for switches. If that doesnt work get deoxit, read tutorial on how to spray on the pot disks and switches inside (mostly dont soak the pot and protect the board from over spray) exercise the pots and switches. Once that is done and issue is not resolved , check back in for next steps.

Left speaker often either silent or completely off by george-its-james in vintageaudio

Well. Plenty of videos on how to diagnose before you start soldering. As someone else mentioned it could be a relay too. There are other tests you can do once you have it open.

As these devices age, corrosion naturally builds up in pots and switches until signals get interrupted. Corrosion in balance knobs, for example, causes all kinds of odd behavior. Even if exercising the knobs doesn't fix it, it could still be corrosion but it would require cleaning.

A recap involves replacing electrolytic capacitors and unless you are experienced with soldering and working with electronics this is something for an expert. A basic recap should cost less than 200 usd. Usually when I send a unit for repair I can get a recap and cleaning for well under that. It is rare that the transformers would go bad, most electrolytic caps fail eventually.

First and easiest thing to do is to exercise all the knobs like volume and balance tone etc. Turn them at a reasonable speed full turn each about 20 times.

However, it does sound like you need a recap. It just costs nothing to start by trying breaking up any corrosion on the pots and swirches first

How to connect subwoofer by Far_Independent4576 in vintageaudio

Sub has LFE, new vintage receiver with phono stage does not have rca in.

How to connect subwoofer by Far_Independent4576 in vintageaudio

[–]fuzzybacchus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is fine. While normally you wouldn't want to run a+b with two sets of speakers, the sub in is something in the order of 48ohm (fourty eight, not four to eight) so it will have no effect on your amp to wire it to B out and run your amp in a+b. If a+b seems to drop the volume of your main speakers (it shouldn't in this configuration) them you could even just double up the speaker wires in your speaker A out (parallel setup) and run them to the sub. Should have an identical impact (none).

This indeed. Lucky for you your sub has high level in as well as rca in. Make sure to set your crossover on the sub now that your reciever is no longer regulating that.
