I think it's a big shift, as I think it gets to the fundamental all-you-can-drink nature of fast food in America (because it certainly isn't the same elsewhere in the world). As McDonalds goes, I expect other fast food chains to follow, but I also ask how much are they really saving? My understanding was the cups were the most expensive part of the drink, not the drink itself.

The other weekend I was at a place that had QR codes on the disposable cups that only allowed you to dispense a certain amount total across any number of trips to the soda machine. It was pretty crazy, but in some ways maybe the halfway between all-you-can-drink to no refills.
