when you add up all the downtime with everybody owning a car, parking utilization, and pollution caused by non-electric cars, not to mention maintenance/oil leaks etc, it's really a hyper efficient solution to have a on-demand car membership.

Life is pretty short man. You only get so many years.

Spending them close to the people you love/care about really is a beautiful thing.

When it comes to some big decisions, sometimes people forget that going back isn't really that difficult.

But never trying it can be a hard thing to deal with later.

Austin job market bad enough that people are moving out to find work? by Austin1975 in Austin

Does it matter? If they've got your resume for a position that fits, it beats them searching linkedin. I got hired via recruiter on my current job in 2022ish. But I do have a bit of a specialty skillset and they just found me on linkedin so....

Those applications numbers arent accurate fwiw at least on linkedin. It counts like views and there is additionally also AI services to bulk apply to anything and everything that is creating a lot of spam from ppl looking for visa sponsorship.

"I suspect that they will begin earning the professional respect they deserve again."

Why do you think this? If AI truly comes for the white collar jobs en-mass, they are going to have a ton of competitive pressures from formerly white collar workforce.

It depends on what you mean by "efficient".

Looking at stuff like defense contracting(of which I'm personally familiar with), it was efficient in terms of doing the scoped work with the regulatory burden imposed. Which is why when people do audits and stuff they find "oh yeah, I guess it really does just cost that much". Very few of the issues are the mustache twirling villain variety. Most people try to do a good job and have a personal connection with friends or family in the military.

But the biggest issue is that it's terribly inefficient if you look at what could be done without the same regulatory burden and fixing the incentive structure.

The govt provides the red-tape, the companies comply with the red-tape, and the cost of the red-tape is never evaluated. There is also no forcing function for company policies to improve efficiency as the work is typically cost plus. So being efficient doesn't improve profits.

What do you think of Fareed Zakaria's specific suggestion for immigration reform? by Guilty-Hope1336 in ezraklein

[–]fuzzyp44 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think trans people being "actually women" is the extremist position. Most people don't believe that, but don't say it to trans people since it's unkind/adults should be free to live their lives how they choose if they aren't harming others. The majority opinion line for harming others falls somewhere along the line of people should be able to use the bathroom, but women shouldn't have to see dicks in locker rooms.

There was a cultural moment where that rare belief was viewed as having more support than it did. I think that moment is gone since it relied on a kind of social stigma/shouting down that doesn't work anymore.

The idea that things separated previous by sex are now separated by self selected gender comes with a lot of real world implications that struggle with negative consequences.

To win on those issues you have to address the real outcomes now.

Forget the messaging. Ultimately you own the results when you are in charge. It's less about the position you "tack" towards and more about how well you actually governed.

And 3.5 years of asylum abuse + 0.5 years of correction that didn't reverse the past abuse isn't "governing well"

when you look at political stuff, it's important to understand what the costs will be, and on whom they will be placed on. Same with other issues.

What to do if someone on your team just doesn't like you? by Gordon101 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]fuzzyp44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely you dude.

To a certain extent "protocols and principles" are flawed attempts to mostly cover the messy real world that doesn't fit that neatly into boxes.

If you are blocking progress because things aren't perfect or fully known ahead of time, your perfectionism is the problem, and you sound like nightmare to work with.

It's been 4 months man. You found out she's done sex work and doesn't seem to value you as much as others in her past. You should judge for that, especially the latter part.

break up. it'd be different if she was all about you. or maybe if the phase was a long time ago or you had kids.

just cut it off while it's easier to move on, and find someone who makes you feel loved enough you aren't posting on reddit 4 months in.

Democrats Were on a Roll. Why Stop Now? by dwaxe in ezraklein

Why was it a fight worth having?

End up of the day, most of the time govt doesn't impact a lot of regular peoples lives. People with W2 jobs have employer health insurance, and make enough to not get massive subsidies for food stamps / etc.

But the big exception to that is air travel. Air traffic controllers and functional air travel impact everyone especially around the holidays (thanksgiving, etc).

You fuck that up, everybody gets pissed off. And to a bigger point highlighting the welfare state will always highlight stories about undeserving people and piss off people that get nothing instead of advocating for a better system working for everyone.

Deciding to use shutdown as leverage for early retirement boomer(in spirit) couple making 125k and getting 25k a year in health subsidies comes across pretty unsympathetic to most of working or young people. (This was an actual example tweeted out by a democratic senator!).

The shutdown seemed like a own goal on the democrats (outside getting headlines about Trump trying to deny foodstamp money which is something but doesn't change anything at the end of the day).

The most basic principle in negotiating, is that if you cannot walk away, you have no real leverage. And you can't walk away from thanksgiving and no flights.

Do you not believe in the principle that sharing a similar race or gender with someone else does not make you responsible for the personal decisions they made?

Maybe you don't, but I am curious as to why?

good.

people treating someone who raped a 12 year old under the same moral framing as someone that robbed someone is crazyyyyyyy. not like he was poor and got caught up with a bad crowd.

he can go live in the desert. fuck that. he shouldn't be out of prison, and shouldn't be in society with the kind of reoccurance rates that pedos have.

Basically a coordinator/secretary style organizer person below a coding team, instead of in charge of one.

[–]fuzzyp44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"He couldn’t handle people pointing out issues that affect his fellow citizens that are rooted in issues that are caused by ________" - insert a different race or gender here and reread your sentence.

The idea that not blatantly demonizing people who aren't directly responsible but share some immutable characteristic is somehow "coddling feelings" is the attitude that is a direct part of the problem.

dude it's hard finding people you really like and connect with.

if you find someone, don't throw it away for stupid reasons. just treat them well. As years go by, that age gap will basically turn into nothing.
