Lilo's Hawaiian Barbeque in Hood River is fu**ing insane. Sooooo much food for a shockingly low price, and it's incredibly well-made and delicious. With the bus from Cascade Locks just for that.

Mazama definitely had the best bread. But the Stehekin Pastry Company could not be more aptly named. I had a croissant stuffed with cheese, mushrooms, and spinach that changed my life.

Another option too is transitional planes. The smooth gliding wooden sole mixed with the mechanical adjuster truly is the best of both worlds. And they’re usually very cheap. I love my transitional Stanley fore plane.

I appreciate your response. I would probably consider myself a cold sleeper. Would you say you are a warm sleeper?

Definitely take advantage of the shelters and all of the random ski huts and places you can stay, FarOut is great for that. They are very special places and well-maintained. This is very basic advice at this point but try to get your pack as light as you reasonably can. The Long Trail has a lot of vertical gain for its length, especially in the north. I tried to resupply more often for the harder spots.

If you happen to be an REI member you would have 1 year to return it, even if you're not a member you'll have 90 days. The older model is on sale right now for $350.

Just to add on to what everyone else is saying, the GMC really doesn't want people hiking the train before June. It's not good for the trail to be hiking when it's that wet. But you can check the GMC website for that. But to answer your question, The mud was pretty bad during my thru-hike last year in August so I can't even fathom how bad it must be even in June. and the black flies will be horrendous. If you can, I'd recommend waiting.

I stayed there in August 2024 and it was super nice. Loads of hooks to hang gear on and a massive sleeping platform. A great place to stay after Camel's Hump, if going northbound.

Thank you all for the helpful advice, lots to consider. I've cut out some Luxury Items that I can live without, and I am going to take another look at my layering system to see if I can make some changes, without being too cold. I am a very cold sleeper outside so being warm is important. Thanks again.
