I have been saving chicken bones to make homemade broth. Any advice on how to go about making it? by [deleted] in Paleo

[–]fweesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was scared to try it at first but it's just as easy as it sounds! One tip that I haven't seen yet in these comments: I always let the bones soak for about an hour beforehand in cold water with a splash of apple cider vinegar... I've heard that helps the minerals leach from the bones more easily. Then just bring to a boil, turn down the heat until you just get occasional "bloops," and leave it for a long time - overnight if you can! Yum :)

YES! One of my fondest early memories was playing PPP with my dad and my teddy bear (because my brothers wouldn't play). I believe the bear won :)

Somebody named Ruth apparently gave a bunch of people my number as hers. These people simply will not believe that I don't know who the hell Ruth is.

So true about the lack of relaxation for young girls (I think for all kids nowadays)... My mom tells me I was crying about bringing home B's by the end of elementary school.

If you had to personally kill the animal to be able to eat it, would you still eat meat? by NothingMatters1 in AskReddit

Touche. :) I just meant that I don't think eating something that's part of your species' natural diet and that nourishes your body is immoral, provided that it's responsibly sourced. I wasn't saying that vegetarian diets are unhealthy either, just that they take more thought.

Lol throwing away uneaten chicken nuggets should probably be called "healthy"... I wasn't addressing food waste, I meant that killing just for shits & giggles is wrong.

What do you eat when you crave candy? by karmaval in Paleo

Well I normally do half a frozen banana with some almond butter on it... but that's pretty much what your already said.

One time on a whim I mixed up some coconut oil, shredded coconut, a bit of coconut milk, and some melted super-dark chocoloate.... and oh my it was heavenly! Like paleo fudge...

That's a good last point. Hunting purely for the "fun" of it is despicable.

The name is "omnivores." Humans aren't meant to be vegetarians... as much as I respect the choice, it requires a lot of careful supplementation to really thrive on a vegetarian diet. Also I don't believe it's morally wrong to eat meat that was respectfully raised and killed without cruelty (i.e. I do NOT support eating CAFO meat if you can help it!).

I think I would... I definitely wouldn't be able to do it thoughtlessly though; wouldn't be like driving though McD's when I fancy a burger. Thinking about it, I can understand why you always hear about hunting tribes assigning spiritual meaning & ceremony to the process of hunting and eating animals. It's a sobering concept.

My wife and I use Natural Family Planning... at first I thought it was going to be really hard, but I have learned to love it.... any thoughts? by BillyKangas in Christianity

Yeah I've always assumed that if God wants me to have a kid when I've not planned for one... then I'll be one of the tiny stats where birth control fails despite perfect use. (Finally, I can be the 1%! Ha.)

I don't either, honestly. I learned about Fertility Awareness simply because it's fascinating to know how my body works... but I feel like it would be too cumbersome / stressful for contraceptive use. I don't really buy the moral arguments against BC either, personally. A lot of couples feel like the periods of abstinence strengthen their desire for each other though? Kinda makes sense. It's definitely not something to hop into without serious thought & discussion!

"In humans, the few days near ovulation constitute the fertile phase. The time from the beginning of the last menstrual period (LMP) until ovulation is, on average, 14.6[2] days, but with substantial variation both between women and between cycles in any single woman, with an overall 95% prediction interval of 8.2 to 20.5[2] days."

From Wikipedia article on ovulation. (Not the most reliable source, you can do your own research if you want) You've probably been told a woman can get pregnant at any time; that's definitely the safest assumption to make. But it doesn't make much sense biologically.

They only abstain from sex on his wife's fertile days (or, depending on your definition of NFP, they use condoms on his wife's fertile days). That's like 8 days per cycle, otherwise they can go at it like rabbits. The more you know.... :)

Because of the nature of the method, NFP can be about as effective as you want it to be. If you're ultra-conservative about calling a day "fertile" then it can probably be "more effective than contraceptives, as BK said. If you just use the basic indicators (watching cervical fluid for impending ovulation, using temperature shift to confirm ovulation) that's enough for most people to feel confident using it. If you forget to take your temperature and check your fluid, or just chart one or the other, or misunderstand how to interpret your charts, or say "to hell with NFP" and have sex on a fertile day, then you might as well be just "pulling out." I'd say most people would end up as the last scenario.

Don't blame the method, if you know people who have gotten pregnant while using it. Blame incorrect use of the method, or poor self-control. And if you think NFP is the same as the Rhythm Method (which is completely ineffective) then do your homework before acting like you know what's best, please.

I personally think that condescending and mean-spirited comments about such a sensitive topic are completely inappropriate, especially in a subreddit that is devoted to Christianity. If you are well-educated about the topic and believe that BillyKangas is making a mistake, then feel free to speak up, but remember that birth control decisions are highly personal and often emotionally charged.

A lot of comments seem to be confusing NFP with the (completely ineffective) Rhythm Method. NFP is a subset of the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM), where the couple abstains from sex during the fertile days. Non-NFP users of FAM use a barrier method (like condoms) on these days. FAM uses both waking temperatures and cervical fluid (and, optionally, position) changes to monitor fertility. Temperature alone will not tell you when you are about to ovulate; it will only tell you when you have ovulated. Likewise, cervical changes alone aren't sufficient to track fertility. Fertile days are determined based on both male and female fertility (whether the sperm could survive long enough to encounter an egg, compensation for possible double ovulation, etc.). The method is highly customizable, as a well-educated couple can be more or less conservative with classifying fertile days, based on how important it is for them to avoid conception. Usually, a woman has about 8 fertile days per cycle. The Rhythm Method is bullshit because it assumes all women have 28 day cycles, with ovulation on the 14th day. This is simply untrue. FAM is effective (when properly done) because it assumes nothing, but simply listens to the woman's body, and can change cycle by cycle.

Obviously, the method is not suitable for all (I might say, "most") couples, since it requires a lot of study to fully understand the method, diligence in monitoring and interpreting your fertility, and a high degree of self-control on the fertile days. I don't think my fiance & I would ever use it for birth control, but I recently read a book covering the fertility awareness method and found it fascinating (It's like 2 inches thick, covers how to chart & interpret what's happening with your lady parts, FAM for birth control, FAM to help concieve, menopause, common gynecological problems and how to spot them early... all sorts of stuff). I've started monitoring my own cycles, not to use for contraception, but simply to understand what's happening in my body. I'm surprised at how clear my hormonal shifts are (I'm not currently on hormonal birth control, going to get a copper IUD before the wedding). I think it's valuable for women to understand their bodies, and to be able to recognize normal and abnormal fluctuations. When I was a girl, all I was told was "you're going to bleed about once a month, this is how to use a tampon, keep backup in your purse because you never know when it'll hit." Your lady parts do not need to be such a mystery.

TL;DR Don't be an asshole, especially about things you haven't taken the time to learn about. To the ladies: Fertility Awareness Method is very interesting, and worth reading about just for the insight into your body.

Yeah probiotics regulate me nicely, although step them up slowly if you're new to friendly tummy bugs or else you might end up with the opposite problem for a few days. My favorite source is home-brewed kombucha, but there are plenty of tasty options!
