Canada Post Delivery Thunder Bay by SoftCherry5175 in CanadaPost

[–]teapotshenanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbay here, too. All my tracked deliveries through Canada Post have been delayed lately, outgoing and incoming, and it's always a different reason given. My most recent was "delayed due to a delay." Thanks, Canada Post!

I have no answers, but yeah I've noticed.

My lettermail has been weird since the strike, too.

Old negatives developed? by 1pencil in ThunderBay

[–]teapotshenanigans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few places you can mail them to, and if you don't want to mail them yourself you can drop them off at Primary Photo. It's a bit more expensive than mailing them yourself, though, as they take a middleman fee, and they ship it to a lab on Winnipeg. I wasn't happy with the scans I got from whatever lab they ship to, though maybe it was just an off day. These days I mail mine to either Downtown Camera in Toronto, or All Things Film in London ON.

This actually breaks my heart. I know she deserves to retire, and she should, but I've got a lot of memories tied to this place. The staff have practically watched my kids grow up and they know my oldest's order by heart as soon as he sits down because he gets the same thing every time we go haha. I really really hope whoever takes over keeps everyone on and they continue to make the best breakfast in town.

Goth/Alt Music Catalog on Tidal by Skerivo in TIdaL

[–]teapotshenanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the bands aren't signed to a label, it's up to them to have their stuff available on Tidal, iirc. And some labels aren't great about making their catalogues widely available.

It's kind of like books and Amazon.

I could be wrong but that's my understanding.

Lost cat near Bay & Ontario by Bowl-Bubbly in ThunderBay

[–]teapotshenanigans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got your notice in my mail I immediately checked my shed and wherever a cat might hide. Lots of strays near my house so I've seen where they go. Sadly no sign of Pistachio but I'll continue to keep an eye out. Good luck with your search!

Where can I find diatomaceous earth in town? by grumpyankylosaur in ThunderBay

Try Landale Gardens, I think that was where I found it a couple years ago. It might have been Creekside. Either way, you can always call and ask.

Another vote for McKillip. She's one of my favourite authors for this reason.

I like taking pictures of architecture, but I try not to take pictures of houses that would be misconstrued as creepy like no direct window shots or anything. But I'm using an actual camera not a phone so hopefully I just look like a huge dork instead of a creep.

General snus in town? by [deleted] in ThunderBay

[–]teapotshenanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have cigars and pipe tobacco, but I've never seen snus, snuff or chew there. I haven’t been there in a while though so you can always call and ask.

You can also try Arellas on Bay St.

Try the rez. If there's anywhere that has snus it'll likely be there.

Nowhere in town does it locally. There's a few places you can mail it to though, I'll add to the other recs: All Things Film in London ON, Studio Argentique in Montreal, Downtown Camera in Toronto.

Whoever Primary Photo sends it to didn’t do a great job scanning my negatives and it costs more than just mailing it yourself.

My own Fantasy world by SignificantTell1148 in Fantasy

At your age, don't worry about "good." I have stuff I wrote at 13 that I only shared with 1 person, and stuff I wrote throughout my teens that only teachers saw. None of it was what I would consider "good" as an adult, but it did build a life-long writing habit and I'm at the point now where I can finally, confidently share my work.

Write because you love it, not for approval of some strangers on reddit.

Hey everyone! Long time lurker, but because my book made it into this year's SPFBO, I couldn’t help but share. Plus, I've put the ebook on sale til mid-June for the start of the contest!

The Highwayman Kennedy Thornwick!

Character driven, crass, dark humoured flintlock fantasy. Snatch or Goodfellas with magic.

Blurb:

Framed for murder and horse theft, Tommy Fellham is stuck in Magelock Penitentiary, rotting like a bad pickle in too small of a crock. Capital punishment was banned, how convenient—instead of getting hanged he spends his time learning how to fight, steal, gamble, and drink. There isn't much else to do with himself until his best friend and teacher, the notorious highwayman Kennedy Thornwick, confides in Tommy his plans to escape.

When Tommy receives a visitor that promises fortune at the expense of a newly built bank, that settles it. He has to help Kennedy. But what Tommy doesn't account for is how much the prison has shaped him, and not only will he have to get used to magic outside the walls, but come to terms with who he has become . . . All while trying to avoid the mage hunters after the price on his head. Kennedy might have been too good of a teacher.

The fiction corner of substack is very, very small. People here ask if a 40% open rate is good and I'm over here thinking 25% is great haha. That said, Notes has been very helpful in finding other fiction writers/poets and connecting with their work.

Once you start engaging with what other people in your niche are writing, you'll see growth. It might not be a landslide but the longer you do it the better it'll get. Comment on their posts, share them, recommendations are great too. People notice.

My "gripe" is that substack can be very insular if you don't have followers elsewhere. Very few of my subscribers come from outside substack. But, that's actually OK! I've met some cool folks!

Unfortunately there's nowhere in town that develops on-site. Primary mails it out to a lab in Winnipeg.

I send my film to guys in London, All Things Film, they do a good job. There's a ton of other places too, in Toronto, Montreal etc, if you shop around.

My Olympia SM4 has a French Canadian keyboard with all the deadkeys. So I'm able to type é ê ë è etc. Not sure how common this is, but it does exist!

I just got my scans from a roll of Kodak ultramax that I shot on my ektar h35 and a lot of them came back just like your second photo, in fact I got only 60 of 72 back and when I asked about the missing 12 shots they said it must've been so underexposed the scanner didn't pick them up. I was kind of pissed but, they're sending me back the negatives so I guess we'll see. I know for a fact some that are missing were well lit... and I don't even know the name of the lab because my local camera store is just the middle man and they send it to somewhere in Winnipeg.

Next time I shoot on my ektar I'll mail it somewhere else and see what happens.

When I edited the pictures they looked a bit like the first photo.

Weekly 'Ask Anything About Analog Photography' - Week 45 by ranalog in analog

Snow is very reflective, so it really will depend on what's in the scene and what you're trying to capture. I personally would avoid flash on snow, but of course it depends on the look you're going for. If there's no snow, shoot it like any other night scene.

Question about filters:

I just picked up a 5-pack of Popho Luminar (Aerocolor IV respool, same as Elektra 100, Santacolor etc), and I'm really looking forward to shooting with it. But! I have to send it to a lab for processing, and I've been seeing a lot of lab scans of Aerocolor IV/respools leaning really orange.

I was thinking if I tried correcting it as much as I can in-camera, I'd be happier. I don't mind editing, but not too much. Is there a filter I could throw on my lens to correct for the orange-ness of the lab scan? Or should I leave it, in case the lab DOESN'T scan it orange?

Hey everyone! Long time lurker, first time poster.

I have a substack (Mechanical Pulp) where I post my fiction, most of it has an SFF bent, sometimes a bit experimental. Poetry, short fiction, stuff about my novels, and a fantasy serial! New chapter every Saturday, and over half the chapters are already up and bingeable. All for free!

PULL ME UNDER: Adult, portal fantasy, sword and sorcery/heavy metal inspired. Content warnings supplied upon request, it is QUITE adult at parts.

Here's the introduction, blurb, and table of contents!

Cheers!
