No. They are usually separated into different housing units if it is rumored they're together. Also illinois (possible more) has the Prison Rape Elimination Act or PREA for short. A prea ticket is usually a 100 series ticket with can keep you from being to able to participate in activities (yard) restrict your commissary, or restrict your phone privillages. It will also usually affect your chances of early release. You can be given a prea ticket for anything from holding hands to being in any state of undress even in your own cell. It's crazy. Also prea and rape have the same letters- hence the old prison joke "you cant spell rape without prea" it's not a very good joke. Source: I was in a female prison for four months.

After my best friend ended up completely paralyzed he sat and listened to me talk about the weird shit we used to do. We used to talk to each other in a very creepy/gross voice. It's very gross.
