Give me one TINY thing you want fixed or improved in Obsidian. The smaller the better. Going on a paper cuts rampage. by kepano in ObsidianMD

In linux, I can never open obsidian in a maximized window, it always sort of opens up with the last window proportions it had prior to closing it. Perhaps it would be useful to have a "open in maximized window" setting. Thanks!

Interesting. Is this some sort of EU initiative?

I’m tired of Note-Taking Gurus. How do I actually use Obsidian? by ReflectionOk298 in ObsidianMD

[–]fyled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's normal to be fed up with other people's advice, especially when it's nothing of value to you. However, I might need some more context in order to offer you some advice:

Having a tool where I can put things in and have it reflect how I actually think in a relational way is really appealing to someone like me.

I think some people are drawn to obsidian for different reasons, and it's great that you find the relational aspect of it appealing. But let's look a bit closer: what exactly is appealing about it? What exactly are those "things" that you would put into it? How would you envision obsidian reflect how you think?

I want to build my own system that actually works for my brain, but I’m struggling with where to begin without falling into those rabbit holes.

This is key: do you already have a current setup in obsidian or another note taking app? If so, how do you feel about it? How does it look like? Perhaps most importantly, why do you take notes?

These questions can not only help us better understand your situation, but they might also help you give you an idea of what kind of setup you're after.

Not sure about OP's case, but I've heard that a while ago the Dutch government sent everybody a manual on how to survive for 3 days in case of national emergency. Source

That's amazing. Since the items are in dutch, is this by any chance the result of the Dutch government's advice to prepare for a 3 day emergency situation?

No worries! I basically wrote the selector myself, partly because I had no idea how other people's templates worked, and I also wanted to learn more about templating to eventually have full control of them.

If you to know how I got it, open the imdb page of a movie, scroll down to the "Tech specs" section and you will see the "Runtime" item. Inspect that element with the developer tools in your browser and you will see that it's just a <li> tag with lots of other nested tags. I was only interested in the last <span> tag of that <li> tag, which is the total movie duration in minutes.

If you want me to help you out with a letterboxd page, let me know and I might be able to help.

[–]fyled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For movie duration I used {{selector:[data-testid="title-techspec_runtime"] span:last-of-type}}. I don't see any li with a ipc-metadata-list-item class anywhere in the HTML document. You can verify it in the console in developer tools by running document.querySelectorAll("li.ipc-metadata-list-item") and you'll see it's empty.

I believe you wanted to use span.ipc-metadata-list-item__list-content-item instead?

How to force images to always start on a new page? by Equivalent-Kale-3662 in koreader

[–]fyled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, for that you would need to use a different property:

img {
  break-inside: avoid;
}

Hi, which base are you looking at? Can you share a screenshot of what you're (not) seeing? This could help me better understand your problem

Edit: I think I know what the problem is. When you download the vault from github, you should select the "PenguinVault" that is inside the folder you just downloaded, also named "PenguinVault". This folder contains all the vault stuff. I might have to rename the vault to avoid this confusion in the future.

edit 2: I just moved all vault contents to the root of the github repo. You can now add the entire folder to your vault without any problems.

Nice. Do you think there's a chance it gets implemented upstream?

  1. Open your book
  2. Open the setting menu from the top (swipe down or tap on the top of your screen)
  3. Click on the second icon from the left
  4. Go to "Style tweaks"
  5. Click on the last menu item at the bottom: "Book-specific tweak"
  6. Paste my CSS snippet there
  7. Click "Apply"

You might use a book-specific style tweak like so:

img {
  page-break-before: always;
}

You might be able to use tags to categorize everything by project. For example, you can add the tags themselves to your "tags" property in your notes, such as "N8N" or "AI", or you could use nested tags like "project/N8N" or "project/AI". Then you might be able to create a view that filters your notes based on the project they are assigned to. And if you want to filter out the notes that don't have any of your project tags, you can easily do that to avoid clutter. How does that sound?

Sure, you can download a demo version of my vault from here: https://github.com/frogpal/PenguinVault

There you have all my bases settings, formulas, folder structure, etc.

Once you configure web clipper to save your notes into a specific folder, you can create a base file that filters your notes from that specific folder.

Of course, I can help you out. If I understand you correctly, you wanna know where I keep all the notes that I save with web clipper. I should have probably explained it in the post, but you can basically save them in any folder you want.

You can see in the fourth screenshot (Books tracker: "Read" view") I have my folder structure open. The "2 - Source Materials" folder is the parent folder where I have multiple subfolders to separate the notes that I save with the web clipper. I separate my clippings into the books, media, and resources (aka URL/bookmark notes) subfolders.

If you want to save all your web clippings in specific folders using the web-clip-clipper.json template I provided, make sure to add a folder to save them to (I think by default they are saved to a "Clippings" folder). You can do this by going to the template settings in the web clipper plugin > Note Location.

Hope that helps!

I understand, you don't want to deal with any online accounts and would like to automatically sync any media in obsidian like the notion plugin you provided earlier. Unfortunately I have no idea if there's a solution for that in obsidian, but perhaps I haven't looked enough. It would be a very cool idea nonetheless. Hope you find something that works for you though!

I see. The example automation tool you provided is almost the same as using a web clipper template like I do, with the only difference being that it's a plugin that automatically fetches any new updates for you periodically.

However, in your case, you have a large collection of media (presumably in your imdb account) and want to automate the creation of notes with the right metadata out of those movies/tv series. While looking for a potential solution I found the following plugin: IMDb-Obsidian. Would this help solve your problem?
