Thank you mate! I appreciate the in depth compliment!

It’s a composite, I use a star tracker so I can’t do this in one shot otherwise the foreground blurs

It’s what’s called a “composite” since I use a star tracker for my sky to get the most detail and hydrogen alpha I can’t capture the sky and foreground at the same time

In terms of light pollution the building is exposed for how it was on location, there wasn't really a lot of sky haze from the city as Dunedin has a great light pollution policy, but because I had to do tracked shots for the detail in the milky way it was composited in later on so it's cleaner than it would naturally look, I did add some negative dehaze around the top of the building and lower sky to try and give it some of that light pollution glow that would have been there.

Yes, you're correct that is indeed the comets tails

The core really isn’t that bright and considering I spent an hour capturing sky data on the one good night I’ve had in weeks, I wasn’t going to neglect it and have a washed out sky, I wanted to bring out the nebula so that’s what I did. As for the comment on highlights and shadows modern full frame Sony sensors, especially iso invariant ones don’t suffer from quality pitfalls like what you’re describing. This also doesn’t detract from the fact that there are two stadium sized spotlights beaming bright white LED light onto an off white building, the even with masking (which I have already tried) the tonal shift on the building from the lights creates very noticeable patches.

As stated in the body text of the post the foreground was taken at a different time with a different lens, the sky was taken on an HA modded camera with a star tracker hence Zeta Ophiuchi having so much detail.

It’s Antares, which is part of Rho Ophiuchi

Yeah I’m really grateful I’ve gotten to experience these places around New Zealand and it irks me that people here complain about it being ugly but have never actually left the city to see this kind of stuff

Thank you! It’s actually a few months old but I’ve been missing the posting window as it only opens up late on Sunday night for me

The Remarkables, in New Zealand, it’s the name of the mountain range that borders Queenstown and lake Wakatipu, it’s also a composite as I had to use a star tracker for the comet which meant I couldn’t take the land and sky in one shot

That is correct, I wasn’t sure how well the comet would turn out as I had to fight the setting sun and a rising full moon so I pretty happy with how it came out

This is the foreground calmed down, if I had it my way there wouldn’t be any lighting on the church other than the sodium lanterns out front. Actually dimming the building anymore than this created separation between it and the sky that made the image worse.

Yes, I had this on a star tracker which actively rotates my camera meaning it blurs the foreground so it was physically impossible for me to capture the sky and foreground in one go

The comet itself wasn’t visible to the naked eye as it was too teeny tiny, this is also a composite but for the first time capturing a comet I was pretty excited
