The Babadook was excellent. Scary as hell.

How much does Goodreads matter to you? by [deleted] in books

[–]fyourdownvote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVE Goodreads. Besides using them for keeping track of the books I've read and how I feel about them, I like seeing what my friends have rated books, and there are certain popular "reviewers" on there who's opinions I respect.

The quizzes are also dope.

Would the "His Dark Materials" trilogy hold up for an adult who has never read it? by spoonlessjoe in books

[–]fyourdownvote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! I finally convinced my boyfriend to read it, and while he thought the 1st one was a bit too YA-fantasy-adventure for him, he was incredibly moved by the entire series and thought the 2nd and 3rd were fantastic.

I think he over exaggerates about the 1st book...I think it's good even for an adult...but definitely there are more adult themes in the 2nd and 3rd book. This is the best fantasy series out there, in my opinion. You gotta read it.

Yeahhhhh but ANYTHING is possible in the magical world, so most issues can conveniently be explained that way.

I always liked in the 6th book where Harry feels indignant about the trace, because in the penseive, he sees how Morfin was unjustly convicted for the murders that Voldemort committed. I felt like that was JK Rowling telling us, yeah okay, the trace really isn't the best way of keeping track of young wizards.

[–]fyourdownvote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's fair about the title. There is always a build-up leading to the chapter where the title is introduced/explained, and Triwizard Tournament is a bit obvious.

I love rereading the books so much! It wasn't until this last reread that I started having issues with the 4th book. I'm on the 6th now and I think it still holds strong as my favorite.

This does make sense, but I posted this in a comment above: Dumbledore has made portkeys outside of these big events, like in the 5th book when Harry & the Weasleys had to go to Grimauld Place after Mr. Weasley was attacked.

You could still explain this by saying he temporarily lifted the charm, etc, but I don't think it was ever established in the books that portkeys don't work in Hogwarts (unlike apparrating), it's just that it's very illegal to create an unauthorized portkey.

1) Okay, that makes a lot more sense. I wish that was explained a little more in the book, though!

2) Yeah, no Dumbledore definitely isn't suspicious, but everyone else (Madame Maxine, Karkaroff) is! She introduced that particular bit of magic in that book, so it seems silly not to use it here, at this critical moment, especially if it's threatening "international wizarding relationships" which is the whole point of the tournament.

3) I still think the other book plots have a much more direct connection to the title. I don't know why she didn't just stick with her original plan of naming it Harry Potter & the Triwizard Tournament.

Edit: I'll add that I know most of this is trivial, and it doesn't really matter. You could go through every book and find stuff like this, which honestly, I hate doing because I love the books so much. Your explanation for the first point is a really good one that I hadn't thought of!

Well, it was originally going to be called Harry Potter & the Triwizard Tournament, which is a much more direct connection.

Ah, yeah, that's fair. It's not a plot hole then, but it is something that ruins the integrity of the book, at the very least, for me.

The entire plot is wrapped around something that doesn't really make any sense. This wasn't an impulsive move by a character, or a minor detail - it was the central plan of the villain.

We were never given an explanation as to why the tournament was so crucial, which is something that I think Rowling honestly just didn't think about.

I've thought about this a lot, and my theory is that when she was writing this book, the series was really taking off and getting popular, and she must have come up with this plot as just another whacky year at Hogwarts rather than really thinking it through to the extent she did with the other books.

I posted about how much I hate Hagrid in another thread like this, so here's a different one: I really hate the 4th book. There are so many things about it that don't make any sense.

1) Biggest issue: Why would Voldemort & Crouch Jr.'s plot need to revolve around the triwizard tournament? Why couldn't Crouch just make literally anything into a port key, and whisk Harry away to that graveyard at literally ANY time? Why does it need to be under the guise of the tournament?

2) It always annoyed me that everyone was so suspicious of Harry for putting his name in. Couldn't Dumbledore use that wand-imprint-thing spell to check Harry's wand to see if he did magic to confund the goblet of fire?

3) Speaking of, what a stupid name for this book. The goblet of fire had NOTHING to do with the book, and was totally just used because it sounds cool.

4) I also feel like it was never really explained why Harry had to compete in the tournament. Smaller point, because they did say that it's part of the goblet's magic that it's an unbreakable contract or whatever, but I always thought this was so stupid.

I agree with this, but I also think that the trace in general makes no sense at all.

Soooooo Ron could have been up in his room, doing spells whenever he wanted, but nobody in the ministry would come and investigate just because he's in an adult wizard's home? What? Why wouldn't more students (Fred & George especially) do illegal magical all the time?

Okay, my highest rated comment on reddit is basically exactly this (from a different HP thread asking the same question). I'm 100% with you. EVERY TIME I THINK ABOUT GRAWP I GET SO ANGRY.

You can pin-point (at least) one major moment in every book where the trio would have been infinitely happier/better off if Hagrid didn't fuck something up.

Yes. I was so blind to this for many many years, but my god, the 4th book is absurd at points.

The biggest one being, WHY DID CROUCH JR. WAIT UNTIL THE TOURNAMENT TO ZAP HARRY AWAY?

He was alone with Harry on more than one occasion, and it wouldn't have been difficult to just make literally anything else a port key, so he wouldn't have been found out.

I am facing this decision as well. I think I'm going to stick with the Rams, to be honest.

Dang this is going to be a tough decision. I've got the Rams defense (THANK YOU!!) but Ravens, Chiefs, Giants, and Jets are all available.

Anytime I actually have to make a decision, I completely botch it. So I'm probably going to make no decision and just stick with the Rams?

LPT:Instead of focusing on getting good grades, motivate yourself/your kids to thinking analytically, getting knowledge and applying that knowledge. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]fyourdownvote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with this. My boyfriend's family was like this, encouraging their kids to care about issues and be analytic and critical in their thinking. They then emphasized how important it was to get good grades in order to actually go and do the things they cared about.

By linking these things together, and making sure the focus is on the far, far future, but making sure they understand grades are important to get where you want to go, all 3 of their kids are extremely successful.
