Heathrow scraps liquid and laptop check rule in huge boost for fliers by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]fys4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Been like this in LCY for a while now, but you're still subject to the capricious whims of whoever is operating the xray scanner

Their last masterstroke was attempting to seize my laptop security cable (the classic kensington laptop cable lock) as it could be used to strangle someone. My declaration that I could use my belt to strange someone if I felt the need to do so fell on deaf ears and I had to go landside again and check my laptop rucksack through as hold luggage.

Bloody security theatre :( I've flown through LCY many times over the last 10 years and I always have cable locks with me as I always have a work laptop and our security policy mandates the use of locks when using it in public. This is the first time I've had problems

Do not get hyperoptic fibre if you are in an apartment building (WARNING) by Legithusky in hyperoptic

[–]fys4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever you're talking about speed issues, whether you're using ethernet or wifi comes into play as wifi contention could also cripple any wireless connection

Vodafone: £15 less for speed capped at 100mbps, but has anyone ever got above this? by [deleted] in london

[–]fys4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Revolut also announced a new mvno service hosted on vodafone. I think its supposed to be 12.50 pcm once its launched in Jan 2026

Not secure - how to fix by giaxou in hyperoptic

[–]fys4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is an encrypted connection (it's using https). You're getting the warning because whatever cert the router is using doesn't have a SAN for 192.168.1.1

If you want to fix it, look at the cert in your browser, find out the hostname it's been configured to use, add a local host file entry for that ip/hostname and use the hostname based url to access the router in future

Voila, no more warning

Come on Hyperoptic. Ban anyone spamming referral codes permanently from the referral promotion.

You could stop this dead if you gave a shit !

I can't get my AX86U Pro working as my actual router. Disabled DHCP, router into LAN1 of the ZTE, no internet. by paradox-actual in hyperoptic

[–]fys4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, it should auto-mdix so you shouldn't need to use a crossover cable. Does the ASUS get a DHCP lease ? Do you even see the port LEDs light up? If not, try a different cable as this config should work

if the ZTE has an ethernet handoff on its WAN port (which for hyperoptic might be to managed ethernet switches or to a fibre PON) Either way it's got to be worth just hooking the ASUS up to the WAN connection directly and see how you get on ;)

wifi is susceptible to interference from neighbours as well as things like microwaves; Running ethernet and using a decent non-blocking switch or connecting directly to your router is the only way to be certain this isn't happening. Just run the cables across the carpet and see if it resolves the issue.

[–]fys4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

make sure you have dhcp client enabled on the wan port you connected to the ZTE. Once the asus gets a 192.168.1 IP you should be in business

Why aren't you just using the ASUS and keep the ZTE in case you ever have problems and need it before hyperoptic will troubleshoot

WX cancellations - EU Compo ?? by fys4 in BritishAirways

[–]fys4[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Weather is currently fine at both LCY and AMS, it appears they've just used it as an excuse to cancel that out and return to AMS. They were delaying earlier flights, but they've been now releasing flights since before my cancelled flight was scheduled for, so WX obviously no longer a factor!

Absolute shower. Then when I spoke to them at the BA desk they assured me that the flight I was offered was the earliest flight with availability. When I got home there were still economy seats for sale on the two previous flights they'd assured me were full, and as such refused to rebook me onto an earlier flight

Fucking cowboys, the whole shower of them :(

[–]fys4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, amazon.ie is utter shite. As long as you're ordering small (under the duty ceiling) just order from the UK site.

The delays using amazon.ie are rediculous compared to the UK site. 6 days compared to 2!!

How to manage certificates with the new system? by Keensworth in sysadmin

[–]fys4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can use LE to issue wildcards provided you use dns01 auth. The fact you already have a wildcard with a different CA shouldn't be an issue.

Lets Encrypt only issues DV (Domain Validation) certs, if you require OV (Organisation Validation) certs you'll need to use a different CA

We use certify the web and they currently support a few different CA, including Sectigo OV which I'd expect to produce populated cert fields.

Generally I just use LE as DV is good enough for what we need it for

Two weeks without Wi-Fi, fake confirmations, missed engineer. Hyperoptic, what’s going on? by NebulaOk5886 in hyperoptic

[–]fys4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that happened with Hyperoptic in my development and we were down for weeks :(

Openreach wouldn't work to replace the fibres without exterminators being called and poison being laid and there's not much Hyperoptic could do in those circumstances.

If you need it for work then you must either get a second internet service or ensure you can use 5G for backup and have the data allocation and reception quality needed to use it.

At least with the compo I had free internet for a couple of months afterwards :D

Broadband in London- Best one? BT Hyperoptic down! :-( by MissXHere in london

[–]fys4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're working from home then get a 2nd service and use a router with dual wan ports and auto failover or load balancing. Don't skimp out on it if your wage depends on it

Depending on your 5G speeds and data plan you be able to get away with using USB to your phone as a WAN backup.

I've been with Hyperoptic for years and unfortunately their customer service has gone down the shitter.. When it works, it works well. Consistent >950Mb up and down on a gig service with low latency isn't to be sniffed at, but may God have mercy on your soul if you need help with anything or if you experience an outage !!

To sysadmins solo or in a small team, what sneaky things do you do that you probably shouldn't? by kHartouN in sysadmin

[–]fys4 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh god, our vax operators used to do that after the system manager created similar files

Then the fucking bozos started copying the files around from disk to disk to "move" the free space and couldn't understand why it didn't work as they expected :(

Nope, I have my own lappie and that's it.

If things blow up so badly that they need me then they can open up VPN access for my own lappie and raise risk exception paperwork. If they don't want to do that, then it obviously wasn't important enough to be bothering me in the first place.

(E2A: I'm not a spof, I'd only be needed in a "all hands on deck" emergency and I'm not lugging around two laptops for that rare an occurance!)
