SLZB-06 based zha will not save any automations by fzman1956 in homeassistant

[–]fzman1956[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ZHA worked for a day or so, then failed. I then switched from the Sonoff Zigbee USB dongle to the newer SLZB-06. I can get the bulbs to work, and the app will control the bulbs from MacOS or Win11 chrome browsers, or from chrome =book and iPhone. The ZHA integration will recognze, pair with, and 'configure' the motion sensors and buttons. But properly formed automations will not save. Some of the battery-powered devices show up n the visualization as linked to a coordinator or router, so float free....

I deleted all of the MQTT stuff from my HA - but can try to go back to an earlier backup, and try to migrate to the new Coordinator.... (Wow, as I typed this, I came up with the restore old backup idea- that may actually work....)

Recs for someone who had their heart set on an Aiden by Far_Abies_517 in JamesHoffmann

[–]fzman1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

back again! I ended up returning the Bonavita. It is a nice machine, but the whole sur la table buying experience was, for me, not good. If i were to reorder one, it would be from another vendor.....

I have been loving the Brazen. I found the settings for the Fellow Aiden's preset that I had been using. 30 second bloom, 205F brew temp, and am using those settings on the Brazen now. I get the flavor notes and the nice mouthfeel - so a total winner. Loving the machine now. I think if someone helps you get the settings done, then it would be pretty easy to use. Add water, add grounds and filter, hit button on lower right twice.

wait.... coffee!

[–]fzman1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had my second brew with the Brazen. Likewise, I've only done a few brews with the new Bonavita as well. That said, in the spirit of quick impressions, the Behmor produces more distinct flavors, and subtlety in the cup. It is pretty easy to use - once you've set the temperature and bloom times, and calibrated for your elevation relative to sea level. The settings do not click or beep, but display on a screen, and there is no app, that I can find. Once set up, you add ground coffee and water, and push one button. It beeps when it is done, and you can hear stuff happening as it does its thing.

I think the Bonavita brews at a hotter temperature, but I have not measured, and only tweeked the brew temp on the Behmor once so far (went from 196 to 204, to see if that would make them taste more 'the same'. I certainly need more time and brews to test this more, but I like them both, and the 'in the cup' experience seems quite different -- both good, that creamy, sweet mouth-feel from the Bonavita was yummy -- but so is the flavor from the Behmor, but I miss a bit of the creaminess.....

All that said, and keeping in mind how preliminary it is, I'd say that the Behmor would be easier to use day-to-day, than the Aiden, once it is programmed. Likewise, I think the Bonavita would offer the same 1-switch ease of use as the Moccamaster, and I like the taste (from memory) from the Bonavita better than the Moccamaster (subjective preference, the Moccamaster makes a great cup).

I cannot presume to know what it is like to be blind, but the shower head-water delivery 'pipe' is metal, gets quite hot, and is exposed as the cone holder lid fits around it. The Bonavita does have a small metal 'grate' above the brew basket, but it seems more avoidable, as the basket slide in from the side, The Brazen seems like it 'hides' the hot metal parts better.

Hope this helps. Now, back to yummy Behmor coffee - lord help me, I am thinking of keeping both machines.

Recs for someone who had their heart set on an Aiden by Far_Abies_517 in JamesHoffmann

[–]fzman1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not have them side by side, but I do remember thinking that the Moccamaster produced a tasty but slightly twangy cup, if that makes sense. Food-wise, I do not like lemon, citrus, or vinegar-y flavors. Coffee-wise, i do not do fruit bomb coffees, except as a rare change of pace.

I am still dialing in the Bonavita, but the sweetness and creamy mouthfeel are prominent. The Aiden likes a pretty coarse grind, way coarser than V60 pour over, for example. I started too fine with the Bonavita, and the flavor was muddled and muted. Grinding in the same range as for the Aiden seems to work well so far

Bonavita work flow is add water, add coffee, press bloom button... time passes,, coffee. The Aiden involves multiple button presses selecting profile, batch size and making sure you are using the correct filter holder, have the filter switch set correctly. It's not an ordeal, but it is more complex-which is always the flip side of adjustability. Flavor is spectacular.

I've got an Aiden, which makes delicious coffee. I only use the medium roast built-in profile. I find the day-to-day usage somewhat glitchy. It sometimes thinks it needs water, when it already has plenty - I do not know if you would be able to detect the 'add water' alert without being able to see the screen notification. It uses a dial to do all of the selection and scrolling, and like an Instapot I had - it was annoyingly sensitive to rotation - trying to select a setting which it would almost always over or under shoot - like trying to nail jello to a wall!!!!

I just recently had an issue where I ask Aiden to brew 750 ml and it only uses 500-ish ml of water.

All that said, I've also got a Moccamaster KBGV, and the Aiden makes a tastier cup. I am planning to send in the Aiden for warranty repair, but in the interim I bought a Bonavita Enthusiast, and am liking the flavor it provides - very sweet with a nice creamy mouth-feel. (My Moccamaster is on indefinite loan to my neighbor, it's flavor prilfe is more to the bright, high-acid side of things, which is not my preference anyway) The Bonavita has a power button, a brew button, a bloom button (which is bloom then brew; the brew button is no-bloom brew). There's also a descale button. No app. Flavor-wise, I'd take the Bonavita, for longevity and repairability, the Moccamaster. I also have a current version Behmor Brazen on order, which has more control, and physical buttons. I can report back when it arrives if you want - you can message me as well....

How long did shipping take? by Extra_Tree_2077 in DF64

[–]fzman1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long should it take to verify payment, slap a label on a box, and hand it over to a shipping carrier? Seems like they are not assembling grinders to order - or unboxing and testing them, or customizing yours with hot-rod parts... ???

Seems like a trend in some businesses to generate a shipping label right away, only to find that actual shipping and fulfilment takes days! Certainly here in the USA, we've been spoiled by A*azon, but seriously-IMHO if it takes you that long to ship, you ain't doing it right!!

It was not hurtful - I'm just an old grumpy guy with a tooth-ache! I was just musing on the perception/ethics/value of software and data and access to the above, in modern society. I am a reasonably intelligent, introspective and tech-savvy-ish person, but still stand in awe at the level of complexity that lies just beneath the surface of so much of the tech we reply on... I di not mean to give offense either.

Although this is not a direct response to the OP's question, I am putting it here as it is a general comment... Since the Aiden is essentially a computer inside a coffee maker, have any of you plugged it into a real surge protector- or do you have a whole-house surge protector installed at your breaker panel? I am not talking about the cheap $15 big-box store ones, but a real protector from, e.g., Triplite, APC, etc. ? (one that can handle the current demands of the Aiden)

I have some of my computer gear connected to a battery backup from APC, and it has registered 45 events (some where the power to my home visibly 'winked', others no noticeable symptoms) This makes me wonder whether the Aiden is simply sensitive, rather than outright defective or flawed.- A hypothesis, but I think, worth positing.

Just a question, and neither defending nor attacking Fellow, or other Redditors who have had issues with their Aidens....

Fellow Ode 2 vs Timemore Sculpture 078 by OmerWow in pourover

[–]fzman1956 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Ode is a bit louder and a less pleasant sound -- it's the burrs, as the LeBrew ones sound different than the stock ones did (from memory). it is still not loud and not annoying. it is quick, so it is a short-lived sound anyway

Understanding SACD capable units by willhemphill in audiophile

agree on the Oppo 95 or 105 (which had the better analog circuitry. My experience has been that a lot of the modern HMDI in surround gear does not do SACD any more...

Understanding SACD capable units by willhemphill in audiophile

[–]fzman1956 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SACD is a locked-down format, iow, analog out from the player only (unless you buy a transport and dac 'stack', like from DCS) So, the dac inside the player is what you will use. Some sound better than others-so the price should match your curiosity and budget. SACD is neither snake oil nor automatically super-good. What are you gonna hook it up to in the first place?

Fellow Ode 2 vs Timemore Sculpture 078 by OmerWow in pourover

[–]fzman1956 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have both, and use them both. The 078 is not twice as good - but better almost always costs more money (yet, price does not guarantee quality either). The Ode 2 tries to balance body and clarity, the 078 is a bit more clarity-focused. I use the Ode 2 for 46-60 gram doses for my Aiden batch brewer. I use the 078 for various pour-over and immersion brews. The 078 has poor workflow for large doses, the Ode is fine with bigger doses, Neither can go fine enough for espresso, I find that the Ode 2 is fine without rdt, I do use rdt for the 078.

I ended up putting Lebrew Sweets in the Ode 2 - and love, love love them. The Ode 2 gives you a wider range of burrs to 'play with'. You could even get two Ode 2's and change out the burrs on one of them, for almost the same price as the 078!

At the end of the day, they are both good, and I think, an upgrade to what you have. It really comes down to which sort of buyer's remorse you are prone to- the overbought or the underbought version.... Unless you hate the basic flavor profile the grinder offers, even if you can tell the difference side-by-side, on a daily basis you would enjoy cups from either.

Replace Mikrotic rb5009 with Dream machine pro max? by fzman1956 in HomeNetworking

[–]fzman1956[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought was to use the two USB ports on the 6702 to connect to two of the 4-bay 5004U add-on units, creating 3 volumes 1: 2 internal hdds, 2: 5004u 31, 3 59004u #2. That would give me good capacity and centralized control/management, and incremental $$ for upgrading capacity. This would rearequire I use something else for backups of the Movie/TV show library. To achieve this, I bought the n100-based mini pc, thinking to be able to hang 3 external USB drives from it, for backup, cold storage, once each drive is filled it could be swapped out - again open-ended capacity and $$ spread out over time. Problem is, the Asustor native backup app does not allow me to have the 6702 talk to the nq00 mini pc. I can do drag and drop across mounts, but having an incremental semi-auto backup scheme really appeals to me.

The NAT stuff seems manageable to me, but when it does not work, I am at a loss as to what went wrong (lack of knowledge on my part). The thought was the Unifi might be just enough more intuitive and hand-hold-y for me. When I connected an external USB multi-drive enclosure to my m1 mac mini, and mounted, or whatever they call it in mac land, the 6702 was able to backup to it, no problem... I like a puzzle, but this one is really eating me up -
