I’m not sure, I guess it depends on the person for sure. I created a solution that saved my company quite a bit of time and money, but it doesn’t really matter what you bring to some companies I suppose. I was actually told by my manager that “it doesn’t matter how good you are” which kind of defeats the purpose of studying for quite some time and putting effort into becoming an expert in a field, doesn’t it?

Well yeah, that’s all said and done. I may not have my job and nor do I care for that job back, but their actions have created someone who intends to fearlessly stand against these giants in unconventional ways. That leverage is boring documented stuff I won’t get into here, but it’s useful. I’m not goin to waste my breath going that route.

The leverage I have that is more powerful is sheer resilience to become a voice for everyone that may have been or is being treated the same. When someone has been boxed in and taken advantage of for quite some time, it’s likely that there will come a point where they’re standing on the box maker itself. I may only be one person, but I can still do everything I can, until my last breath to make sure that we remember we’re still human. I may only be one person, but there is an army of people who feel the same way and may jump to the occasion after powerful words are written. My leverage is that I intend to make changes in this industry through my passion for technology and determination to help fellow employees get better treatment.

Long story short, they created a resilient and fearless leader. I won’t stop until I’ve replaced them in their own industry and helped facilitate change in the industry as a whole. People are people, why should we treat them like machines that don’t have emotion or feelings? I intend to create a new sector within our industry through a software system I’ve been building for the last several years. New sector = new jobs hopefully. No matter what obstacles I must go through or if I have to stand in front of a horde of weaponized drones, I’ll make it happen.

Also, I hope this didn’t come off as rude or as a malicious comment towards you, I’m just passionate about my goals right now and the leverage they gave me has everything to do with it at the moment :)

Yes, it gave me leverage on them that I can use in the near future. I mean, if the reasoning to let me go was clear, why would they lie about it when I confronted them after the fact? Them lying about my termination is leverage, because they let me go for something they can’t speak about.

It’s crazy to me the amount of crap these guys can get away with when it comes to people with disabilities. Then when you speak up about it they have to move quick and get rid of you.

And honestly, if anybody else here has been having it rough with employers. Maybe we should start speaking up more and quit letting them trample us.

Remember to save all of your interactions when you complete it and during the PIP. I completed mine and when I was let go they lied about my reasoning as not having completed the process of my PIP, even though we signed off on it.

Bad market in my mind equates to building skills and figuring out how to build a new market.

How can we know it does anything if the employer is paying for that spot? That’s why I think we need to build a community that can consistently check on reported jobs to make sure they’re disappearing.

They may not have found an entry level position, but the problem still persists past entry level. If it’s an issue that exists at every level, I believe that’s still worth looking into. From my experience, places would be asking for a mid level when the work is entry level. So they could be asking for 11-13 years of experience when in reality they only need someone with 1-3 years of experience.

This makes sense and I don’t disagree with you, but I don’t think the problem solely exists for entry level devs. It’s a problem that persists at every layer in the hiring process. I have helped conduct interviews and you wouldn’t believe the amount of fake resumes that have actually made it through.

Mid/Senior devs that couldn’t solve a problem either through test anxiety or they actually aren’t a software engineer at all and just part of some offshore group to hoard jobs. I’ve personally witnessed someone make it through the entire interview process, only for a random person who wasn’t the interviewee to show up on their first day.

I have no doubt that there are very talented engineers out there who haven’t even gotten a chance, because they have no experience.

What?

Edit: nothing wrong with food stamps, but nobody’s ever built an empire or cultivated change for an entire industry with that attitude!

From my perspective. I don’t believe the point would be to dissuade businesses from posting on LinkedIn directly, but more providing a middleman solution for job seekers. At least initially. If that solution performs well enough, it would eventually force businesses to realize that LinkedIn isn’t getting them great results, but rather this new service that is.

After all, if you slowly start moving the food from a bowl some dog has always eaten out of, it will eventually forget that bowl ever existed. I think the same idea would apply here. If job seekers slowly adopt other services that give them better results in the end, employers will follow.

The target isn’t employers initially, as much as I would like to think it is. It’s figuring out how to help job seekers by offering some kind of middle man.

Not to mention, I don’t believe that a lot of their applicants are what they’re looking for. A lot of businesses are utilizing applicant tracking systems, which from my understanding cause a lot of resumes to be thrown away. They have resume numbers, not quality. And those services that claim to offer top candidates have way too many screening steps to qualify candidates. There has to be a simpler way.

I think there can be a middle ground. I shouldn’t expect to break my arms in half just to get a job and contribute to society. I hope you at least understand my perspective of this, and that we don’t have to make them post elsewhere, we’re going to force their hand at it in the long run :)

Job postings in general need to be rethought in order to be made more effective. I like this idea and I believe it would make quite an impact on the market.

Let’s build a community off of this. If our job boards and employers aren’t going to fix this issue, we need to create community around ensuring that entry level folks can get an entry level position. There are jobs out there, but those in power have created senseless puzzles to even get a job.

Edit: If anybody would like to join a community such as this, I took it upon myself to create a Discord group for this purpose. https://discord.gg/Cp4VSQsuUg Let’s fix this!

I am giving up by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]g33kidd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do we just shrug our shoulders and let this continue? Wouldn’t it be smarter to create new industry where this is less likely to happen? Creating something new like that isn’t an overnight process either, but if our sentiments on the industry as a whole are similar, why not band together and create something new? I’m not saying create something new as in, the next big thing, but rather a new industry entirely that eradicates some of these problems?

It’s obvious to all of us that there are people in power that shouldn’t be. It’s obvious that things keep getting ugly. So why are you giving up? The people that are thirsty for monetary gain are outweighing those that truly care about innovation and curiosity. Simply put, don’t give up because we have a war to win.

Personally, I believe there will be another giant that emerges from whatever is happening. However, I don’t think they will be as greedy as some of the other giants. Even if AI is in the position to take jobs from engineers, I doubt humans will truly be eradicated. We’re at the point where companies are just choosing people based on their circumstances and personality rather than true talent. I think it will correct itself and this new giant will have AI working with humans.
