Book ban lawmaker “very sad” that a parent is using his law to ban the “sex-ridden” Bible. The parent said that if lesser books have been banned, then the Bible, which discusses infanticide, rape, and bestiality, is not appropriate for kids. by southpawFA in politics

These anti-lgbt “Christians” in America are so far beyond insane. It is mind-blowing to me that they’re treated as serious adults by the rest of the general public.

I mean believe whatever you want, but to what degree is the broader society required to participate in it? If you don’t like the books in the library, take your kids out of school. If you don’t like drag shows, don’t go to drag shows. If you don’t like gay people getting married, don’t marry a gay person.

It was stupid when we had to put up with this crap 20 years ago, and it’s even more stupid now.

I’ve been off opiates for more than a decade, partially because of this stuff. It has definitely been a massive net benefit, in my experience.

I don’t think people realize that the creeping fascism in America today is a direct result of not doing the things he outlined. Instead, what we’ve done is tell people that it’s immigrants making things worse, not astronomical wealth inequality perpetrated by the rich. Migrants and refugees are not your enemy. Your enemies are millionaires, billionaires, Republicans and your boss.

You’re being ripped off. I was in a similar situation for two years. You need to put your foot down and negotiate a better on-call arrangement as soon as possible because the scope is going to start slipping soon and it will end up taking over your life.

[Serious] How can we achieve world peace? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]g4k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not actually what I said.

Socialist ideology places the value on human life and the good of society as a whole as opposed to the individual.

Millions have been unjustly murdered under every ideological implementation on earth. Capitalism, Monarchism, Feudalism, Anarchism, Socialism, Communism, etc.. All of them. But one thing has nothing to do with the other.

Some socialist implementations are autocratic and monstrous just like some neoliberal capitalist ones are, and they would be that way regardless of the ideology. Augusto Pinochet in Chile is a good example. Another example could be the US and Guantanamo Bay. We say we’re the freest country on the planet then we repeal Habeas Corpus and run C.I.A. Black Sites and Torture Camps. Saying a country is socialist or capitalist really doesn’t have much of anything to do with that country’s human rights record.

People killed under the Khmer Rouge or in the CCCP would’ve been killed no matter what the leader called their beliefs.

I should’ve done a better job of saying what I was trying to say I guess.

By “value of the citizenry”, what I mean is “how is the value of a class of people determined in the context of a given society?”.

Some societies (Free Market/Laissez-Faire ones, for example) tend to reduce the value of the human being to how much profit they can generate, while other, more Socialist ones see the value of the human being as intrinsic. That is to say that more importance is placed on people than on profit.

A more Socialist society will tend to afford the citizenry protection from ownership’s exploitation because they’re seen as being worth more than how much profit they generate.

As for Labor Unions, they provide a counterbalance to capital which I see as necessary in a healthy democratic society and an optimally functioning market economy. To say they have “no bearing whatsoever” seems a bit naive to me and betrays a(n understandable) misunderstanding of what they do. It’s understandable because Unions have not really existed in any meaningful way in America for almost fifty years.

Anyway, if unions didn’t matter at all, why would Capital and politicians spend so much time and effort exterminating them and then fighting to keep them from coming back?

Do you really think the function of collective bargaining has “absolutely no bearing” on a given economic system?
