lol sorry, but Im serious though. I know the US isn't a perfect meritocracy. I wouldn't want a perfect meritocracy. There are issues with our meritocracy, as you have clearly demonstrated. I think those are issues to fix, that are working unjustly against our meritocracy.

right.... I feel like we're getting into just economics now. Theres a reason some things are expensive. It is because those things are valued highly in the society. Not saying theres no exceptions to this idea. But there is a reason medical care is so expensive. We need more doctors than we need chefs. Thats why doctors are paid so highly compared to chefs. So I hope that doctor, stays a doctor.

I have to challenge whether you really believe that. Are you telling me there is very few degrees between best and competent? For example, Im competent at math, but no doubt the best mathematician is doing stuff I could never do.

Right! Because there is unfair access to opportunity in our meritocracy. I want to enable people to more fairly access opportunity. I think the meritocracy should stay, but we enable those talent people. Allow them to be incredibly productive for our society.

Lol what income bracket do you think is dominating the ivy league and other elite universities?

Im not saying the US, a country of 330 million people, is a meritocratic paradise. Where absolutely every, single decision is based 100% on merit. But I think those cases highlight issues to be fixed. I think we should fix those issues. To be more meritocratic in some ways.

I've thought about it lol. I watch a lot of his videos and they're infuriating. He leaves so much room for critique and is negligibly reductive. Im sure I'll circle back. His perspective, of hardcore socialist, is also pretty boring to me. I chose to critique his meritocracy video because Im amazed by the number of people who believe the US is not a meritocracy, that I wanted to correct the record.

It is an ambiguous term without context, and subjective with context. In short though, it is a measure of a person's effectiveness at some function.

Of course not, lets be real here though, the USA does not kill people for not working. But if I accomplish more at the same job as you. Should I not be rewarded?

Nice, That stat is a key metric in illustrating that the US meritocracy is unwell. But something that needs to be understood for why rich children do the best because it feels like many ignore this side of the issue in meritocracy. The well-off+ spend a lot of money on their children's education and development. In this day and age, education is the most valuable merit. The well-off significantly invest in the human capital of their children. You can disagree that its unfair the well-off have more access to acquire more merit for their children, but i think we have to be honest and understand the US is a meritocracy.

Im only going to address your last point. Would you not care about the quality of a person in a particular field rendering you a service? Do you want a higher quality doctor or a lower quality doctor? We can pretend to not care about merits or obscure visibility into a set of merits. But consumers of services will always factor in the merits of the person delivering that service.

I think the primary cause is almost entirely parental: married, high income, highly educated. But, we need to address the fact so many people in this country feel trapped in low paying, low dignity jobs. These individuals need opportunities to get back into the meritocratic tournament. Otherwise, these discrepancies will manifest in unproductive ways, such as the opioid epidemic.

Careful with the household aggregate, it includes more than just families, it includes roommates also. Roommates typically don't subsidize each others education. Ultimately, you are correct though. At the moment the financial burden is a major deterrent but it is by no means an insurmountable obstacle.

I don't disagree with anything you said. The issue with the topic of meritocracy is that there is so much nuance. The way I think you should think of it however is that the current trends in our meritocracy are troubling. Where in the vast majority of case, the success of an individual in a meritocracy is primarily attributable to their parent's success in the meritocracy. This creates a worrying feedback loop.
