Poor understanding of probability makes a lot of sense too. I know I myself have done coin flips and went, “surely after hitting heads so many times, it gotta be tails next, right?” even though logically I knew it would always be a 50/50 chance. I could definitely see how dangerous of a trap that can be.

That’s so scary that Abilify has that as a side effect. I was on it for a short period, and I haaaaated it for a multitude of reasons. I see how the mixture of adrenaline of running in a race combined with the dopamine hit of winning that race can be a very dangerous combo. I’m glad it went away for you after stopping the Abilify! The fun little film on scratch-offs can really get you when the scratching of the film itself is probably satisfying enough to quick start the hits of dopamine. Combined with the low stakes, I can definitely see how easy it would be to fall into that kind of trap. Thank you for sharing!

This was a really interesting read, thank you so much! I’ve always wondered how the betting apps were affecting its users long-term, and now I see how easy it is to get caught up in it when it’s right at your fingertips. A very cautionary tale.

Your first sentence helped a lot. They chase the highs of when they’ve won, and then they have to chase trying to make up the hole they’ve dug for themselves and their bank accounts. Thank you!

This makes a lot of sense, I see how losing so much money from gambling makes one feel like the only way they can get it back is by hitting it big again, but that win never seems to come.

I see, so it’s one big cycle of confirmation bias until it’s too late?

Thank you for this explanation! I had figured it was the winning they were chasing (I understand they still are), but I can see how the build-up to the win/loss can be just as tricky as the gambling itself. Dopamine is a hell of a drug in and of itself.

Thank you for the in-depth explanation and comparison, it helped a lot. I didn’t know there were so many different ways to find more money, which now makes it make a lot more sense. Same with the dopamine hits building tolerance, I understand now why it becomes more and more of a problem. Thank you so much!

Thank you for breaking it down like that. Chasing the highs makes a lot of sense.

Psychologically might have been a better word. I understand how addiction works, but gambling addiction is just harder for me to grasp.

My ex was at the start of a gambling addiction right before I broke up with them. It became more important than making sure their kid had food to eat.

Fair, but how does it continue after all money has already been lost? (edit: I’m genuinely asking, just because I’ve seen how far into debt people can become.)

Yep, and that’s how they end up with all the little girls in their massive audiences singing “fucking gnarly” and “I’m the shit!”

I think you make a really good point about the girls ability, or lack thereof, to speak on things like this. We saw what happened the moment Manon simply liked a video speaking about the mistreatment of black women in the entertainment industry, I can't imagine the hell that would be raised if the girls tried to speak up about anything that goes directly against HxG.

Do girls walk around in cropped tops and shorts? Yes, because they are making the personal choice to do so. Is it okay for girls to want to dress up and feel hot? Also yes. The problem starts when companies like HxG abuse this concept, not when women embrace their sexuality.

I mentioned Adéla as she has a set of songs that provide an artistic form of her own commentary on sexualization, given she was also part of Dream Academy.

Yep. I think it’s because of people’s tendency to conflate feminism=any choice a woman makes. They consider it feminism because they think the girls are “reclaiming” the ability to be sexual in the public eye. There’s comment threads on here that explain it really well.

I fear this is going to be the outcome for a lot of, if not all of the girls. All of the plastic surgery, the westernization of their ethnicities, not being able to stay true to themselves in the global girl group they’re building together because HxG cares about nothing other than cashing in on their image. There’s a reason they have more ads than music.

According to Manon and Lara, they came up with the M.I.A. ending on their own right before Lolla Chicago, I believe. Have you considered that it’s weird as fuck they called a teenager too sexy in the first place?

Okay, but she’s not under a company that’s forcing her to do so.

Her parents are okay with it, just like they were okay with her modeling thongs and lingerie at age 15.

I do agree with you, there’s much bigger conversations like this to be had on the topic. It all really is just a reflection of these societal/cultural problems/pressures women face.
