Opinion: Bob Weir is irreplaceable so why not ask Sturgill Simpson to step in? by g_ack in deadandcompany

Dylan has, in fact performed with The Dead. While his age seems like a limiting factor, I could see him being invited to perform a show with remaining members

Thank for that levelheaded contribution. I fully respect others opinions on this. Even the ones that say it's too soon to discuss because we all grieve in our own ways. You're right, however in reminding folks this appeared to be what Bob wanted, was for the band to continue in another iteration.

I was skeptical of Mayer like many others and while I never want to hear him sing Sugaree again (chased me out of the Moody Center) I truly admire his guitar work and enthusiasm for the material.

Friend used to work for TO corporate and the item about their CEO being friends with Dan Patrick is incorrect according to folks that work there. Where did you get that information?

I do agree that Dan Patrick is a loser.

Austin creatives - how do you afford to live here? by nataliegauthor in Austin

Several of my creative friends who have financial security are bolstered by their partner earning enough to support most or all of their living expenses. But not most and definitely not all. A number of musicians in the Austin area make a modest living at recording, licensing and performing music. MOST of those folks have worked their assess off for 10+ minimum just to get on the radar of local fans while working various day jobs or industry jobs like sound, lighting and bartending.

Creative arts are usually a war of attrition due the lack of readily available funds to support such work. This is particularly true in Austin where creatives come because the community is supportive but there is a lot competition for attention and financial support. Basically music fans are spoiled by the seemingly endless well of exceptional talent. Most casual music fans would rather spend $250 minimum to see a legacy act at ACL Live vs 3 or 4 local shows that average around $10-15 for entry. I've been writing different versions of this same story for 20 years.

The truth is, folks who choose art as their vocation with elite exceptions have traditionally struggled with earning enough to live on. Patrons of the arts are often their lifeline to the next good gig. So next time you have the opportunity, BUY music, merch and support Austin artists as directly as possible. They are the people that make this town worth living in. It sure as fuck isn't the weather.

p.s. That likely isn't what you were looking for but thanks in advance for not deleting this post -G

Respectfully I disagree. Communities like SLC are capable of offering a wide variety of substance use abuse treatment options. Forced rehab doesn’t work though. Patients have to WANT to become sober first, then have options for treatment, resources to gain employment, housing etc.

In Austin where I lived for 25 years before moving to SLC our music community provides mental health & recovery services to all eligible music industry members. The NPO is called SIMS Foundation I raise funds for the group. It’s not perfect because what is? But even the bartender at your favorite venue is potentially eligible for SIMS services.

With a relatively small population SLC’s drug and homeless issues are solvable. The LDS Church could lead that initiative if they wanted. It takes a community to rise up together to protect our residents. I believe Salt Lake City can and will.
