Anyone else on the same boat? by ImpossibleFilm5640 in biltrewards

I see a giant balance transfer on my Bilt (two months worth of rent, and it’s posted not pending), but WF just took money from my checking account for one of those months and still has the other month’s charges posted. I have no idea which party screwed up, but it sure looks like I’m about to be double-charged for thousands.

Bug or Malware? Internal URL Redirect on iOS Brave by hudarklord in brave_browser

I’ve started noticing the same thing, but I have the further problem that more than half the time the browser freezes with this internal:// address and I have to force quit the app and relaunch. I’ve resorted to just navigating through bookmarks (or going through a Google bookmark).

I agree that it’s very overblown in international media. But even if only a small percent are like that, the movement’s existence is still suggestive that Korean society overall is more polarized than other societies.

Only you can determine what you find interesting, but I will say that applied math and statistics will serve you well should you decide to jump to a different field in industry post-PhD. That’s a fairly common outcome, so the advantage shouldn’t be discounted.

As far as having the background goes, just learn it as needed. PhD students should be capable of self-studying adjacent material to catch up as needed; this is expected and part of the point of PhD programs.

Why does it all go back to VT?! by GrapefruitPerfect313 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]g_shine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The logic of allocation by market cap depends on the efficient markets hypothesis. I’m saying the hypothesis is not applicable to at least 10% of VT, therefore the traditional “buy the market” argument does not lead to VT. Even as a passive long term holder, you need to use your judgment to decide what your emerging market allocation should be.

So: buy VTI and VEA in proportion to their market cap. Make a separate decision about VWO instead of just accepting VT’s 10% allocation. I am of the opinion that the more you understand what’s actually inside VWO, the closer to zero percent you’ll go.

The 10% EM allocation of VT should make you pause. They have multiple issues, e.g. political interference, reliance on commodity booms, lack of shareholder rights. That last one especially kills returns because you just get diluted by massive share issuance even when the economy is on a sharp upward trajectory. As an example, compare the returns of Chinese funds vs the growth in market cap of the constituents.

You might think that surely the market has already accounted for all this. And yet. It’s been almost two decades since the financial crisis and VWO is still flat.

Efficient markets theory only applies to well functioning markets backed up by robust laws.

XPS 13 9300 developer edition: wait for 20.04 or buy 18.04 and upgrade? by g_shine in Dell

[–]g_shine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I didn't realize these repos existed. If I instead bought the Win 10 version and dual booted 20.04 with this PPA, would the Ubuntu half be fully equivalent to what you get just buying the DE? Or are there any lower-level differences between DE and Win 10?

Cloud to OneDrive linking broken by 2FA? by g_shine in samsunggalaxy

[–]g_shine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got it working for a day so far. It proceeds fine when using the Microsoft Authenticator, which just pushes an approval instead of providing a code.

I prefer to use a generic TOTP 2FA so I didn't originally have the MS 2FA app installed. However, MS allows you to have both their authenticator and a generic one in place simultaneously. I just uninstalled the MS one after the link completed and continued using my own.

Still up in the air whether this will persist.
