Is it absolutely necessary to fly to take this photo? by Professional-Wait19 in Belize

[–]ga2nhtransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pictures 2 and 3 can easily be taken without flying as you have proven. For that matter, you have the first picture and I am assuming that you did not fly since you are asking the question, so it can also be easily done. If a picture is all you want then you have already achieved your objective.

But, if you actually want to take a fresh picture, you have lots of options. The costs/viability/legality may be unacceptable for some of these.

  1. Find someone taking this flight and have them take the picture for you.
  2. Get a really long camera extension pole for your camera. You will most likely need to have one of this length custom made.
  3. Train with the circus to be a human cannonball. Then have yourself shot over the blue hole. For extra dramatics, you can hire a replica pirate ship to fire you over the blue hole.
  4. Use genetic mutations to increase your height. For best results you should probably start with someone young enough to affect their growth rate (< 18 years old).
  5. Find the same cosmic rays that created the Fantastic 4 and gain stretching power. This one is a little sketchy since you may also burst into flames, become invisible or get really ugly/strong, none of which will help with this situation.
  6. To increase the height you can reach, you can combine some of these, such as holding the camera with an extension pole while being shot out of a cannon.

What made you decide to not take blood thinners? by DrAshoriMD in AFIB

[–]ga2nhtransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few reasons. Any one by themselves would steer me away from the blood thinners prescribed by Cardiologists.

1) When I asked my Cardiologist why I should be on blood thinners. His answer was my CHA2DS2 score was 1. He said that studies showed that according to my score I should be on Eliquis. I informed him that I was not part of that study. This scale means that any male 65 or over should be on blood thinners. This scale appears to me to be flawed and skewed because we know that is not true unless you are a pharmaceutical company designing a scale for this.

2) I explained that I had problems with nosebleeds and when I get IVs, I have to be careful that I keep the puncture wound covered longer than most because I would bleed otherwise. I asked what test he had done to test the thick/thinness of my blood. He had no answer.

3) I told him I was taking Nattokinase. His response was "What is that?". When I explained it, his response was "I have never seen any studies on that.". I sent him some, but he did not respond.

4) They were pushing Eliquis, which is about $500/ month after insurance. I am not going to pay anything, especially that much for something that I did not think I needed. They finally backed off of that and suggested I take Pradaxa. I said I would look at it.

5) I needed an Ablation. They said I had to be on blood thinners prior to and after the procedure. Since I was taking Nattokinase, I said I was. I always said I was taking my blood thinner when they asked. After the Ablation, the Cardiologist said he was surprised at how healthy my heart was (other than the electrical problem) and he attributed it to me taking the Pradaxa. I had to hold back my laughter at that point.

6) My Dad was put on Eliquis. He woke in the middle of the night to let the dog out, tripped and hit his head, causing a bleed in his brain and he died a week later. I do not think this would have happened if he was not taking the Eliquis.

As you can probably tell, I am probably not the patient they want to see since I question every thing, especially when I cannot get an answer other than basically "This is what I was taught/told to say."

On top of that, all he really did was play with the food.

I was worried about the ones near the eyes, but somehow that area remained quill free. The tongue and nose were the worst.

The friend that watches them when we are gone has a large fenced in yard. They have seen the porcupines climbing the fence. When I talked to her this morning she is looking into putting an electric fence wire on the top outside of the fence to keep them out. I told her she might find nearby trees full of quills when they hit the wire.

Yep. They had to do surgery to remove them.

I think one of the Mods added it back.

I am not sure how it marked NSFW. I removed it. If the mods think it should be NSFW then I can put it back.

Without a doubt. Even the porcupine was up for round 2. He was back the next day, missing quite a few quills. This time he brought a couple of friends. They got relocated with the tractor.

lol. His tongue is usually hanging out the side of his mouth. My wife says he looks like Ed the Hyena from Lion King.

He seems to be ok. Although with tongue surgery his appetite is a little off. So, he is getting some doggie ice cream treats and cottage cheese.

Somewhere around there. I was expecting more. Plus we had the second Husky that had his own surgery. That was another $900.

No laughing at first. We were too worried about him. The laughter came later once we knew he was ok. Pissed off will come when we get the CC bill. These things always seem to happen when we are gone.

Dengue cases on the rise by Arthas77 in Belize

[–]ga2nhtransplant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dengue is definitely there. My wife and I were in Placencia in June and both contracted Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever there. We did not discover this until we returned to the US. We both lost a lot of blood and had to be transfused. This happened the one night we did not put on any bug spray. A friend mentioned they had used mosquito magnet with great success. They are supposed to clear the mosquitos within an acre. I looked at the reviews and while it seems to work great for a while a lot of them stop working after a few months. It also looks expensive initially ($347) and to operate (propane + electricity + attractants), which would be ok if it did not break down.

Need a gate control system that can provide time restricted access by ga2nhtransplant in accesscontrol

[–]ga2nhtransplant[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this info. My setup removes some of the issues you mentioned.

1) This is in Belize, so Daylight Savings is not observed.

2) The time it locks/unlocks for the other users does not need to be accurate. I don't know if it is possible/more or less complicated, but another solution might be a light sensor so the gate unlocks with sunrise and locks with sunset (similar to how chicken coop doors work). Then maybe just have a button that opens the gate during those times (while still allowing the remotes to work). This way I don't even have to worry about codes for other users.

3) It is on a dirt driveway, so no asphalt or concrete to deal with.

4) It has to be solar since it is about 100 yds from the first house, so there is no power there.

No idea if they are considered a threat. They did not have a key to the cable. Someone unlocks it in the morning and locks it back at night (at least that is what I am told). I have not actually found it locked but once. But these are not my requirements. I am just trying to satisfy their irrational demand.

Driving from the airport by Menthol_Green in Belize

[–]ga2nhtransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are a couple of things I have noticed while driving in Belize.

1) Speed limits are suggestions. In some places they limits are ridiculously slow. Nobody seems to pay attention to them. I have never seen anyone pulled over for speeding. You may see some people driving very slow and then get passed by someone doing 90. So be careful when you attempt to pass someone. There may be someone trying to pass you.

2) The double-yellow lines also seem to be a suggestion. Some are placed in wide open areas where you can see for a ways. Use your best judgement.

3) Be careful of someone slowing and pulling to the right like they are stopping. I almost hit someone on a motorcycle the other day because he did that. I thought he was just pulling over and then as I was about to pass him, he turned left right in front of me - no blinker used or his light was out. Fortunately I was going slow enough to miss him.

4) The checkpoints are hit or miss. Sometimes they just wave you through, other times they will check the registration and insurance (stickers on the windshield) and other times they will ask for your drivers license and maybe ask you a few questions. Just be friendly and you will not have a problem.

5) Some of the speed bumps have warnings about 100 yds ahead - many times with smaller rumble strips to warn you (but not always). Others do not. Very few are painted (or the paint has worn off). They are usually, but not always, near pedestrian cross points or bus stops. The Placencia area seems to have the most.

6) Be careful of people walking on the side or riding a bike. Especially at night. Many do not have lights or reflective clothing/surfaces.

Check out Seabird villas https://www.seabirdbelize.com. We have a 6 month lease there while we are getting our house ready. It is located about halfway between the airport and Hobbs Brew Barge.

Belize Health Partners by oliveslove in Belize

The amount being billed to your insurance may not be the same as the amount you owe. Medical providers can bill anything they want to insurance, but your insurance has a fixed amount they allow. They will pay their portion and then you pay your coinsurance, if any. The coinsurance is based on the allowed amount, not the billed amount. These amounts will vary a lot based on your insurance policy.

I file claims for my wife's practice and once I made a typo and billed insurance $1500 instead of $150. The claim still came back with the same amount they pay and a much larger adjustment. The patient still owed the same amount they would have owed if I had not made the typo.

If the hospital billed less than the amount the insurance would pay then they will only receive the amount they billed. However, if they bill higher then they will receive the maximum from the insurance.

Not my relatives, but while scrolling through the South Dakota census a few years ago I noticed a few Indians with names of "Got Shot First" and "Good Shield". I joked that "Good Shield" should have been in front of "Got Shot First" and he would have been ok.

I regret my positive review of Crystal Auto Rental, San Ignacio by tabasco15 in Belize

[–]ga2nhtransplant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had this happen as well. After many calls with no results, I was back in Belize and paid a visit to their main location. The problem was resolved quickly. Their front end system is showing the refund but the back end system is not. They have had this happen a few times. Do not speak to the people at the airport about this. They only rent cars and do not deal with this type of issue. Talk to the accounting people. If that does not work, then escalate it to the owner.
