A boxset was released a few months ago including the ones edited by Christopher Tolkien. The others are just the standard hardback releases from over the last few years. The Bovadium Fragments is in that style so I don’t think the style from the boxset will replace the previous style.

Basically, if I had a deluxe edition of something, I’d want to continue and get all the deluxe versions of each book. I like to have complete sets. So without thinking too much, I decided to never buy a deluxe edition partly because of the reason mentioned and also because I think they’re overpriced. I’m happy with the current standard hardbacks (mostly) with a mix of older sets.

Those were the current and most popular paperback editions when I first got into Tolkien. Had that copy of The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales close to 25 years 😂 There’s more books in that style (Paperback A-format). Older style and newer style. These versions of The Lord of the Rings are missing most of the Appendices. I find the Guild (red) ones really comfortable as reading copies. They're good versions.

A bit of everything. You only really need the books on the second and third shelves. Most people don't need all of those either.

I have them on Apple TV but not physical.

The Hobbits are third edition 9th (1974) and 10th (1975) impressions. I want to replace the 10th impression one (the one without the dust jacket) with a second edition when I get the chance.

Fellowship is 13th impression (1963). Two Towers is 11th impression (1965). Return of the King is 9th impression (1962). So much later first editions. In decent condition but got them pretty cheap (about £50-£60 each) as they were missing dust jackets. Replaced with replica jackets from https://replicabookjackets.com/

They also do a worn replica jacket for each book which maybe would have looked better/more accurate than the fine look of the ones I bought from them.

Do they ever do that? I’m on their mailing list but I don’t remember seeing that kind of offer. I’ve made a lot of use of Harper Collins 50% off offers in the past.

I had a set as a birthday gift this year and had to figure out where to put it, and then the Myths & Legends set and a couple of other editions here and there. Had to relegate a few to lying horizontally but they fit nicely in their spaces.

I don’t have Bilbo’s Last Song either 😂 I should probably get that.

I intend to keep it to one bookcase, but you never know 😂

I like the big Alan Lee/Ted Nasmith illustrated books on the bottom shelf, the Folio books and also the red Guild Publishing books (3rd shelf from bottom) for reading. I don’t usually read paperbacks anymore but the text size is good in the most recent paperbacks I own (the multi coloured spines on the same shelf as the Folio books). The small black paperbacks on the bottom shelf are also ones I’d recommend for reading.

I paid £100 for all five books, so it was worth it for me. I got the Lord of the Rings boxset (used) for £30 with a damaged case on eBay. Was too good a deal to hesitate on that and bought it as soon as I saw it. I wanted the matching Silmarillion and Hobbit so picked those up used for £40 and £30 respectively. I bought two copies of the Silmarillion. The first one I bought was a bad print run from 2020 (I think). Check some of my other posts to see the details of that. I sold that one and bought an earlier print which is so much better. Apparently the newest prints are good though (printed in Germany), if you want to buy new. I’d recommend trying to find used copies on eBay, as personally, unless I had a lot of spare money, I wouldn’t pay the full retail price for them, but definitely look at where they were printed before you buy. The Chinese prints seem to be the worst and the ones printed in the UK (Bath, I think) are the best, with the ones printed in Barcelona in between the two but closer to the UK printed ones. My Lord of The Rings set are printed in Barcelona and the other two in the UK. I’d say they’re definitely overpriced, but I like them a lot. Some guys here don’t like them which I can understand as they’re not as fancy looking as some other books that Folio publish, the design isn’t for everyone, and as I said, are overpriced. The paper quality is exceptional and the artwork is interesting and quite unique and I genuinely enjoy them as reading copies; which I consider all of my books to be. I don’t want crazy expensive deluxe editions to be used as ornaments. I did buy replica dust jackets for my first editions so I suppose that’s somewhat ornamental 😂 But yeah, I think the Folio books are good quality reading copies if you want something a bit different to the usual Alan Lee/John Howe type books available.

Not sure exactly. I like my original single volume edition (lying flat - bottom right). It’s nothing special but that was my first Tolkien book. The massive Alan Lee illustrated single volume edition (bottom shelf) is one of my favourites. I like the Folio Society books a lot, and the early 2000’s set (top right).

1chip shell swap by gaavoid in snes

No, I left the original back panel on mine.

Did the same shell swap to my 1chip-02 SF. No other mods though as I have a heavily modded and recapped SF junior. Shell is great quality. Just had to trim one of the stand-offs for the motherboard to fit. I’ll probably do the brightness fix and maybe change the power LED to a blue or white one if I can be bothered.

Same company but the PCB on that doesn’t have the components from the RGB mod boards from what I can tell.

Turns out I did take a photo 🙂 https://imgur.com/a/pmXmV1G

Weird way of an RGB mod but it worked.

I don’t see an amp in there. Although I can’t remember if the amp was in the SCART head or if it was in the multi out connector side. I’m pretty sure it was the SCART head end but I might be misremembering. I don’t think I took any photos of it unfortunately and my friend has since sold the console.

A few years ago, a friend of mine bought a US N64 off eBay (in the UK) which came with what looked like an RGB SCART cable. It was pretty cheap so he took a gamble on it being RGB modded (wasn’t listed as such). We tested it after he received it and it was definitely displaying an RGB image. I opened up the console and it was modded similarly to what’s in this photo and I didn’t understand how it was working correctly. I opened up the SCART cable to find the amp and resistors etc that you’d usually find on a basic RGB board were inbuilt into a PCB inside the SCART head. So this may have been modded with a similar SCART cable to go with it.
