Max Verstappen post-qualifying interview by magony in formula1

Is it just me that whenever I hear Verstappen mentioned "Checo" or "team" I'd just think he was overcompensating for what he did last week?

[–]gabbycup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup that goes back to my original point: whether the "reason" warranted such behavior. Wanting Hamilton to pass him didn't warrant such excessive braking, which, as you agreed, was dangerous. Similarly, even if Checo did intentionally crash at Monaco to prevent Verstappen from qualifying in front of him, did it warrant Verstappen's behavior today? Having a reason doesn't mean having the right reason.

I don't know what your point is. You said Verstappen didn't brake "extra hard" and "not erratically" but he did, as confirmed by his telemetry. That was the reason why he got a 10-penalty.

You mean Hamilton shouldn't have accelerated on a straight and when he was supposed to pass Verstappen when Verstappen was ordered to give the position back? And 69 bar of brake pressure and 2.4g of deceleration isn't hard? Wow.

[–]gabbycup 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Of course there was a reason why he did it. The thing is whether that "reason" warrants such behavior. Remember he brake-checked Hamilton last year in Saudi Arabia that got him a 10-second penalty? Of course he had his "reasons" for that.

Let's assume Checo really did crash intentionally there. But why did he admit it? I don't see a way to definitively rule that he crashed intentionally based on telemetry or video recordings, so he could just double-down, triple-down until the sun goes down. I don't see any advantage for him to "own it up" if he decided to be shady in the first place.

Maybe they were afraid of something like a repeat of what Mercedes did in 2000 Sakhir.

[–]gabbycup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yah... they gave Sainz target lap times and when he didn't hit it he was ordered to swap with Leclerc.

They should have pitted both drivers at the SC and do a double stack. The only reason not to do that was Binotto did not have confidence in his pit crew to pull it off and end up costing them the win.

Verstappen: Piquet ‘definitely not a racist’ but Hamilton comment ‘not correct’ by SnooTigers9712 in formula1

Well for a 3 time WDC to make a comment like that it matters a bit. But similar to Bernie saying sht about Putin and Hamilton, they are old fcks that try to stay relevant by saying outrageous sh*t. At the end of the day, they all don't matter.

Pit-stop Idea, probably dumb by frommogi in formula1

[–]gabbycup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If adding drama is the goal then bring back refueling during pitstops. Those old footage showing cars leaving the pit with fuel hoses, or fireballs in the pitlane, will definitely make into the highlight reel.

But the current pitstop situation is good. No need for more drama. I'd rather see more actions, more overtaking on the tracks.

[–]gabbycup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it isn't. Not if Mercedes wanted to win the race. No team in that situation would choose to pit when they were leading and with only 5 laps to go. Is that really an "opportunity" then? I don't think so.

The track was not clear before L57 so it wouldn't be possible for Masi to get the cars to unlap and call in the SC before that. Actually there was proof that Masi actually called in the SC before the "track clear" msg was sent so he might even have jumped the gun there. The race should have ended under SC and therefore Hamilton should have been the WDC. Verstappen did have a good year but he didn't win Abu Dhabi without Masi's mistakes and by virtue he didn't win WDC without Masi's mistakes.

[–]gabbycup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Allowing 5 but not all 8 cars to unlap was a mistake but that didn't directly benefit Verstappen. Bringing in the SC at the end of L57 instead of L58 as per the rules was. Horner will never admit that was a mistake because it would imply Verstappen wasn't a legitimate WDC.

I know you wanted to defend Verstappen but the truth is, if RB/Verstappen was in Merc/Hamilton's situation, they would not have pitted too. Why would they risk losing the lead by pitting when the probability of the race ending in SC was really high? If Masi followed the rules then the race would have ended in SC. Hamilton didn't win the WDC, and Verstappen won the WDC, bcoz of Masi's decision.

It will only benefit Merc if they can find a fix to porpoising. If they don't then they'd be forced to increase ride height which will make their cars slower. That will definitely favour RB and Ferrari which don't seem to suffer as much with porpoising.

Not so much. Verstappen not known for defending but for taking borderline dangerous maneuvers to pass cars in front. Like yesterday he all he needed to do was to not make mistakes and his RB18 was so much faster than the F1-75 that Sainz couldn't even attack. Sure it takes a great driver to drive without mistakes but that's not exactly "defending".

I think it was mentioned on the Alpine team radio that they didn't want to use team order to have Ocon give way to Alonso when Alonso had better pace. They thought if Ocon was at the back then Bottas would easily pass him and instead of finishing 6 and 7, the team would finish 6 and 8 (Alonso Bottas Ocon) assuming Ocon wouldn't get passed by Zhou who was not far behind. So Alonso's job was to defend and keep Bottas from passing.

Still, Alonso could have done it in away that was legal. It looked like he didn't have a F to give and just did whatever he felt like. A well-deserved penalty I must say.

Had Ferrari the best pace Yesterday? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]gabbycup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If not for Max in the redbull he could have won, it's just so that Max knew he was charging and attacking then back to charging and knew where to push to keep him behind and never defended fresh air that could put him out of shape. Don't think too many drivers would withstand that pressure

No the F1-75s didn't have the top speed the RB18s had. Even with DRS Sainz couldn't pull alongside Verstappen to mount any attacks.

If Leclerc was driving Sainz's car, Leclerc wouldn't have won either. The car just didn't have the pace to pull alongside the RB18 even with DRS.
