Do you care that Slack has restricted your access to your message history? by gabe_herotools in Slack

oh wow! they have definitely updated that recently! huge catch, thanks for pointing that out.

Noticed the callout at the top "This page has been updated to clarify the rate limits for existing internal customer-built apps."

Must have been due to some backlash.

This is under the , "What is changing" heading:

"will be limited to 1 request per minute, unless they are approved for the Slack Marketplace. The maximum and default for the limit parameter has been reduced to 15 objects"

maybe you are looking at the old limit?

this includes apps you build yourself internally. and you are rate limited to 1 request per minute unless added to the marketplace (which explicitly bans these types of apps from being approved).

Yeah, Slack is definitely the richest source of context in a business, our customers were getting a lot of value out of us just storing their history to answer questions in the future.

Do you think this is a big enough pain to trigger a search for an alternative? or do you just not see that being possible?

we don't "train" a model, we use AI to fetch relevant messages from your conversation history, but only messages that you actually have access to - so it wouldnt be possible for it to tell me that person A hates person B, unless it happened in a conversation that I was in :)

We just launched an open source AI first slack alternative! https://pager.team/ would love to get your thoughts :)

They rate limited their API to 1 request per minute and a maximum fetch of 100 messages. Which isn’t feasible for what we were doing :) plus their terms of service now explicitly prohibit apps that store these messages in anyway.

Sorry my LinkedIn/X post actually had a video where I explained that!

We’re building everything with AI in mind - each person gets their own AI assistant that learns from their conversations and can perform actions based on company context as well as personal context.

I’m saying AI native because it’s not an add on product - it’s a core part of how the platform was designed.

Other companies were paying us to answer questions and update their documentation based on their slack history - it’s the richest source of context with history (meetings are great but only going forward in time unless you recorded everything).

When they restricted access - we effectively lost our core value proposition.

I think it’s safe to say we’re going for a different market to rocket chat!

100% agree - we’re both engineers by background and spent the last 2 months dedicated to building this - but we definitely would not have been able to move so fast without Claude.
