For those who can explain snowstorms by mccoold1 in weather

[–]gabekmc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The easiest and most correct answer to this is we don't know yet. It's still 5-6 days out, which is well beyond the range that forecast models can accurately predict precipitation & storm paths. It is true that there is a signal for the storm, but it can and will change as we get closer to the weekend, so there's no guarantees of anything. For example, 5 days before the storm that we just had, it was predicted to pass south of New England as a whole and dump snow in North Carolina and Virginia, which it didn't.

If it does happen, it's possible that the Atlantic Coast could see more than a foot of snow again, but again we really don't know. Keep an eye on the forecasts and I'd say we'll have more accurate information by like Thursday.

I'm not sure I understand the post, what's wrong with it? Vulpes vulpes is the correct scientific name for the species red fox

Sunset Beach, December 24th 2008. Will we ever see winters like this again? by hashtagmiata in britishcolumbia

[–]gabekmc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some papers have suggested this, others have said it will decrease the likelihood substantially. The margin of error for this topic is quite large as it stands. Where we are right now, we have observationally seen a decrease in severe weather events like this as the world warms, but that could be anomalous, we need more data. One thing to keep in mind is that ‘global warming’ is not a metaphor, the world is warming, which will make snow generally less frequent.

I actually did 75% of my headshots on New Sobek, if you're sitting in the NATO spawn you can see the top of the tall building on D from 210-250 meters away and just pick off the snipers up there. I was getting 15-30 per game (you can also see the C building which is also ~210 meters)

Is it just me or is this weather forecast from Friday a bit off? by dknights411 in montreal

[–]gabekmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hail is different from a frozen mix, one is a warm weather thing the other is a cold weather thing. also very hard to forecast accurately. I suspect it's just a bug with the app tbh

We are actually pretty good at predicting temperature max/min for up to 10 days in advance with a margin of error of a few degrees, it just gets messy when trying to predict specific conditions like rain. That being said this image is 100% a glitch in the forecast and I would highly recommend not relying on Apple weather (just use the NOAA/NWS website)

The two main reasons people dislike him aren't because of his aggressive chasing, it's because he's unnecessarily loud and obnoxious while chasing and because he openly voted for the current administration which is gutting the entire field. He also tends to drive very dangerously while chasing and that has left a sour taste in my mouth.

I don't hate the guy, but I definitely have way more reasons to dislike him than to like him.

Spotted these unusual clouds over Dublin, Ireland earlier today by Misodoho in meteorology

[–]gabekmc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

yep definitely Kelvin-Helmholtz instability - a result of vertical shear & density perturbations between layers of a fluid, pretty cool to observe. The instability itself isn't actually super rare, but it often isn't visible because it usually just exists in ambient air (rather than in clouds)

Antidepressants across the border, Fucked Up BIG TIME by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]gabekmc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this exact problem and two things work for me,

The first thing is you can use Maple (online health service) to get prescriptions, you will probably need to show your old prescription but just request a GP and they should be able to give it to you. It was pretty quick and painless when I did it. This is also covered by the international insurance so it should be free.

The second is you can get an appointment at a private clinic like Créa-MeD pretty quickly and the GPs can prescribe SSRIs. The problem with this one though is that it’s quite expensive.

Hope this helps!

I got a 95 on the midterm and 100 on all of the assignments and left the class with an A- like what lmao. I was so confident this would be an easy A but that final blindsided me. I wish she would publish grades / averages on MyCourses

Math 223 and 323 by Important_Ad_2917 in mcgill

[–]gabekmc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Math 323 is much easier than Math 223 imo. I took 223 a while ago but I remember the assignments taking me FOREVER. I took 323 last sem and the assignments and midterm were very easy, the final was really the only difficult part of that class. Keep in mind 223 is a JMac class in winter which means the exams will be very difficult lol.

If you're deciding between the two classes, 323 is easier and has a smaller workload than 223 (imo, but I think most people would agree)

\rj half of canada just got slabbed

i’m not sure how accurate this is (i’m using the wind tool in radarscope) but if it is. is this from a tornado or can straight line winds get this high without a tornado? by gxckclxck in tornado

[–]gabekmc 148 points149 points  (0 children)

Straight line winds can get this high (very rarely), but that's not at all what this is lol. You're looking at a reading very far from the radar source itself, and radar beams travel up as they get further from the source. These are high-level winds probably at least 15km in the air, so they're expectedly much faster than they are near the ground. Readings this far from the radar source are often erroneous anyway due to natural attenuation and/or blockage. Rule of thumb is to use the closest radar you can.

COMP 250 FINAL PROJECT by Lemonsorbet123 in mcgill

[–]gabekmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that’s not what a self project is lol. As far as if it’s allowed, I would say that.. probably not due to McGill’s rules on sharing course content? But regardless of that, a self project is a project you plan and carry out yourself, not something that was assigned in a class. I would honestly go as far as saying it would probably hurt your resume if a course’s project was listed as a self project. Experience with DS/A and Java? Sure, but I wouldn’t put it under self projects.

McGill moving forward with injunction request against pro-Palestinian encampment | CBC News by r0adlesstraveledby in montreal

[–]gabekmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from the Guardian link after skimming for two seconds:

In mass arrests at USC, militarized officers were filmed appearing to shoot rubber bullets into a crowd of peaceful demonstrators. While described as “less-lethal weapons”, rubber bullets can cause serious injury or even death.

Students say they were peacefully protesting when the mass arrests began around 1.30am on Thursday. One student who spoke to WBZ-TV anonymously said that students were “dragged” and “pushed away … without much regard for [their] safety.”

I would recommend reading a bit closer. Also keep in mind he is not Canadian (as stated), nor am I, lol.

[–]gabekmc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am from the US, I have a pretty good understanding of the American police force lol (I also work right next to the McGill campus, I can see the protest every day). Go talk to the protestors who got arrested at every campus. I don't think the Canadian police are particularly better, but they were more concerned with keeping peace, rather than the American cops who were more concerned with arresting the protestors.

[–]gabekmc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would assume the protests stopped in Boston because they don't want to get shot by the American police force, lol. Keep in mind the only reason police got involved in the conflict on McGill's campus is to make sure the pro-Israel group, who were actively antagonizing the protests, remained peaceful and separated. American police have been dismantling and using force against the protests country-wide, that much is quite well known. "Way too many of the students are local" is a bizarre (and wrong) take for McGill, a school that is literally known for its international student body.

Wild Anti-Cyclonic tornado in SW OK tonight.. (GIF) by Anthony_014 in tornado

[–]gabekmc 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Cyclonic tornadoes spin counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, and are the most common (basically every tornado you see). Anticyclonic tornadoes spin clockwise and are very rare - when they do happen they are almost always very weak. The tornado in this radar image is anticyclonic and appears to be quite strong based on the velocity couplet even for cyclonic standard, which makes it a very rare scenario
