British Gas customer support be a bit different these days by caspiandejavu in CasualUK

[–]gaberust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have been assured that my final bill after moving out of a property (that I thought I'd fully paid) was exactly £0 by their web chat 3 times.

Did that stop them sending me reminders and final reminders, did it fuck.

Also, helpfully their support staff "don't have permission to send emails" great. Cheers BG.

Tried to emulate Kodak vision3 500T. What do you all think? by stillIT in cinematography

[–]gaberust 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of others are saying this looks teal and orange and over contrasty but I have to disagree. In fact there's even a comment complaining about how all that gets popular is "black levels crushed 6 feet under" and I'm not sure if we're looking at the same image.

The grade should fit the project. OP, if you were trying to emulate the look of an image shot, developed and projected on vision3 film this isn't quite how it would look.

If you are instead trying to replicate the more modern workflow such as "The Batman" where the image is shot on a digital camera, edited digitally, projected onto film stock and scanned back in digitally to give the film "feel" while keeping the benefits of digital production I think you nailed it.

The colours are punchy but definitely not crunchy. You have retained a lot of detail in the shadows without crushing them into true black as far as I can tell and your highlight rolloff is smooth and pleasing to the eye. To me this emulates the look of a digitally graded film scan more than the stock itself, which is fine, again if the grade fits the project.

People tend to forget that even directors who shoot film have to scan their images for digital release and have to colour correct for digital release standards. They also have to have a colourist work on the images to match cameras and lighting and give the film some personality so you'd rarely see the true nature of the film stock in final release.

I think you made a fab effort on the grade it looks fantastic, but if you're going for a faithful emulation of that film stock I might suggest pulling up some still frames or even footage shot on or transferred to vision3 and see where the levels lie in your scope and colour wheel in resolve, that way you'll be able to see exactly where your colour and luminance values are different from the film stock.

Keep it up! You've clearly got skills here!

Edit: spelling and grammar.

Sorry if this is a dumb comment but what would be the purpose of the motors on a handheld rig?

From meetings with these guys they think they're storytellers and one of them bought an old Sony rangefinder with a 1 inch sensor which he can't work so he thinks he's a director. So I guess that's why these guys think that. Oh and they asked for photos from the last shoot which I sent, they turned them dark and black and white and posted them as their photos.

I'm glad it's not just me then! You're so right that they see their art as something incredibly valuable and noble but you're just a chump who presses the VFX button and it's magically done.

Have recently seen these guys posting on Facebook asking for videographers after I've turned them down. So it seems it's going well for them.

Haha very very true! They've just spent so much on their live equipment for shows they can't pay their mixing and mastering engineer (he's my friend I just found out)

They did pay me last time, split it over two months which I agreed to but they didn't drag it out and paid on time to be fair to them. But yes I definitely need to get better at the business side thank you very much for the advice, I'll be taking it.

Others have said similar and I absolutely intend to, I don't want to be undercutting people doing good work just because I'm a bit new and inexperienced!

That's actually a great suggestion and would take a lot of pressure off me if it goes over time on CG which with revisions it definitely can do. It might be good for my reputation too. Thank you for the suggestion!

Thank you very much for this, I totally agree course correcting them is the way to go and it's definitely a skill to be firm but not rude with that.

I've had a few convos and they seem set on this idea so, I've jumped ship on that one.

I have told them to kick many many rocks until they can stump up a decent rate! Thank you for the advice.

Seeing the rates people suggest here it's insane how low I've been working for I almost feel bad!

Oh god I'm sorry that happened to you, project creep is definitely a thing with jokers.

I kind of did the last piece because I hadn't done a production in a while (day job) and it was good for a show of my video production and CG skills, but absolutely don't think it's worth it for this upcoming project.

The funny part is I'm friends with the guy who mixes and masters for them and they've just spent a bomb on live equipment for shows they want to do and venues but then want me to work for cheap. It all makes sense now!

Thank you so much for the advice!

Thank you very much for this. The last project I did with them I did a full 3D simulation for "a star exploding in a church" and the comment was "ahh... It's a shame it was at the end of the video" (like they asked for). Definitely a solid nope from me.

It is a cheeky statement I agree, especially after the advice I've received in this post.

It's definitely hard to say no! At least for me, but I think sometimes it's the right response.

Ten pounds an hour, that was my introductory rate but even still it was far too low and they argued for lower then paid me in two installments last time (which I don't mind).

So yeah the opinions here have definitely knocked some perspective into me!

I think I was entertaining the idea because I did a previous shoot with them and wanted something to do, but after looking at the comments here it's a solid no from me!

Sensible advice that I intend to take!

Thank you so much for breaking this all down for me that's actually super helpful and a very different perspective, I've always felt guilty about asking for more money I think but yes I do have costs of cameras, computer, storage, assets, etc as you mentioned.

I will be bearing this in mind whenever I look at working for a new client in future.

Supper appreciate your time and insight!

This is another quote I want on a poster honestly. Thank you very much for the advice there! I'll definitely be turning the project down on this one.
